  1. "Multiple people — multiple times" came the response to my inquiry, if a recommendation brought us here in a seemingly distant section of Whitestone.

Its not my style to begin by pointing out some of the front of the house deficiencies, I feel cheeky pointing them out about this pizza nstitution. However–

We stood inside the door without so much as a sign, a nod to show we have been seen and we will be right with you. Not even the five pizza counter folks standing around cared to recognize our presence, I'm a patient waiter so I wont inflate the standing around & waiting time, easily accounted for over five minutes — on a marginally busy night.

Once seated, we had to ask to have the table wiped down, the waters (H2o) and my well poured Cabernet took time to arrive.
So we had to ask the other waiter, the bus girl wasn't much help, the starter bread was under cooked bialy-ish.
There is no question our waiter cared about our table and wanted to his best, but on this night and six successful locations later, I have to imagine — they were just not firing on all cylinders.

I was excited to see Stuffed Calamari on the menu, a daring starter but just didn't engage my taste buds. Finely chopped (frozen?) spinach, mixed thoroughly with real crabmeat stuffed inside a small pepper sized squid, with a side sauce that was true homemade with a nice kick, but left me wondering — all these quality ingredients did not make a meal that lived up to the hype, not by a long shot —what did I miss?

Our Margarita pie — half prosciutto and half meatball fell flat on its face. The meat balls were one quarter inch cubes of a dark meat, the meatballs looked more like chocolate chips than any meatball I've ever known. I've never has square meat pieces, I didn't like anything about it. Add in the fact that the cubes were more than a touch overcooked, as was the entire pie.

Similar to our appetizer, it had all of the proper, fresh ingredients to be a delicious brick oven pizza, but it didn't happen and I don't understand why. So the mystery continues.

  2. Stopped in a late evening after craving pasta post-work out. The other location was closed pretty early on a Sunday so luckily this one was no too far away. Could have done without feeling super rushed – I get it, it's the end of the day, but as a paying customer, don't rush me to finish while I'm still eating to ask if I want it packed up, or putting the check on the table not that soon after you serve dinner.

The philly cheesesteak pizza appetizer was great and the sausage orecchiette with broccoli rabe was good (though lacking a bit on the seasoning, nothing a little salt, pepper and red pepper flakes couldn't cure) and the penne à la vodka was an interesting take with how heavy the pancetta flavor was in the sauce (not that I'm not a pancetta fan, it was just a lot).

Albeit in a rather random location in a shopping center, it was a thankful find on a late night when you're craving some carbs.

  3. This place didn't disappoint one bit. Everything from the quick service, great atmosphere and awesome food.

As soon as we sat down, they served us bread and butter on the side. We pretty much ordered the dishes that they're known for. As an app, we ordered the calamari. It was pretty good. We both had the grandma slices. We also had the penne a la vodka with chicken. And we got a glass of Merlot each.

Had a great experience here. I do recommend this place to others. There's private parking in the back, they do take credit cards, and it is good for groups.  They also cater. 🙂

Love this place!  You will, too!

  4. Nondescript spot in a little shopping center. Stopped in for a quick lunch and forwent the selection of slices you can get up front and, instead, opted to order something from their lunch menu. Had a green salad and the popular penne ala vodka. Both were fine but nothing to rave about. I would return here for the convenience, if nothing else. There is adequate parking in the lot, too.

  5. This place is my favorite for grandma slices. I love love their crust and the sauce is nice and sweet. The other slices are just as good but I gave it 5 stars solely on the grandma slice.

  6. We ordered here because my wife wanted to try them again for whatever reason. Anyway nothing major but better than the last time. We had calamari with fra diavlo sauce, a stromboli, pasta, a slice and a chicken parmesan sandwich. All good but nothing mind blowing. The stromboli was unlike any I ever had before. Good but was different.

  7. What a neighborhood gem! Came here two times and both times enjoyed my food here.

We tried several different items. For appetizers,  we had the fried calamari and the mussels in marinara sauce. The fried calamari was delicious. It had big pieces of tender calamari that was fried perfectly crisp on the outside. And the marinara sauce that came with the calamari was amazing. It had chunks of tomatoes and basil inside. Yum yum yum.

The mussels with marinara sauce was very good as well. Big pieces of fresh mussels drenched in this tomato goodness.

Also tried their calzone and the funji, mushroom pesto brick oven pizza. While they were good, I hate to say I've had much better pizza and calzones.. ..

Overall, a very solid place. Service is good. And the food is very decently priced and the portions are huge.

    Will return again

  8. Was looking for some authentic NY pizza before returning home. This place happened to be close to where I was staying. While this restaurant was nothing fancy, it satisfied my needs for NY style pizza. Service was fast and the pizza was great.
