After my last visit the manager reached out to me which was really refreshing. He invited us back for brunch and we decided to celebrate the nephew's return to school.
Since we received special attention I will focus on the food in this update.
We ordered the Shrimp and Grits, French Toast, Burrito, Chicken and Waffles, and Bronx Bomber. The exceptional dishes were the Shrimp and Grits and French Toast. We don't eat grits and mom wanted something light. It was an amazing blend of flavors and was perfectly complimented by the croissant bowl it came in. The french toast was like eating apple pie. Dang, I should have put ice cream on the leftovers!
Grams loved her burrito, barely made it through half! My sister in law loved her chicken and waffles but questioned the egg, and lettuce being there. Way she saw it, it was a distraction from what she felt was perfect chicken. My steak was cooked perfectly. The eggs really transformed with the horseradish sauce. My Brussel spouts tasted like my homemade version but were a bit too broiled and almost burnt.
Overall, we were very pleased, and would go back and get the grits. The live music was nice. Because it was bright we were able to better appreciate the decor. The small pieces really come together nicely.
Only negative is that the food did take a while to come out. We were talking and pretty entertained but noted that time was passing…
I can't believe I didn't review this place when I was living back in NYC. My husbands family lives in the Bronx and I was tired of the same old food and restaurants, and saw this place on Open Table. My husband and I took his family here and everyone LOVED the food. Everything was delicious, service was awesome, and drinks were top notch! I go there whenever I go back home now, and his brother even takes dates there all the time now (watch out ladies!).
i loved this place, well worth the trek up from east village. The food was great and the service was outstanding. I wish we were here when they had live music playing, but thats something ill need to do next time i come.
1. The fried chicken was delicious, but the honey coated roasted carrots on top were a little burnt and so i had to remove those.
2. The mac and cheese was good, very filling and the bread crumbs on top wer a great addition, made it nice and crispy
I also had probably one of the best gin martinis ive ever had, so with the great food and great bartenders, I'll definitely be back to try more of the menu options.
have to thank my bf for dragging me here. I absolutely loved it!
I tried some of their local beer they had on tap, can't remember the name, but it was delicious! Then we both ordered the burger. OH MY! One of the best burgers I've ever had the pleasure to eat. Make sure you try it!
I will definitely be back to try their bottomless brunch. Mimosas here I come!!
The people there were nice and attentive especially the bartender, he was engaging and made our experience that much better.
The place is just a gem! Highly recommend it!
Boogie Downnnnn!!!
I'm all for The Bronx "Moving On Up" … And I completely love the fact that Mott Haven has gotten such an impressive addition. This portion of Da Bronx never looked this good!
We've been to other nearby spots and wanted to venture to Charlie's and be bold…
Although Charlie's does not take any reservations for 3, Charlie's was extremely accommodating, yet, set aside a table.
Charlie's has a great cozy-romantic-sophisticated – and rustic feel that I totally grooved to.
We started off with drinks and my daughter order her first drink since turning 21 yesterday( I'm still in shock).
Drinks were tasty and potent. Appetizers were pleasant. Entrees were passable. I went for the Jambalaya minus the sausage, my daughter as well as my husband, went for the strip steak which they thought was fair.
My low review is due to my Jambalaya being too pungent with spices, and my family's steak being either too fatty or saucy. And in addition, service, I must admit, lacked. Though our server was friendly, service required more attention to detail.
I've been meaning to check out Charlie's for a while, and I finally got to last night.
Being in Mott Haven, Charlie's is part of the growth and change occurring in this area. Located on the first floor of the Clocktower lofts, the restaurant has an almost industrial feel to it with bar sitting in the center and tables located around the perimeter. One thing I found clever was that one of the walls has a number framed pictures of famous people named Charlie.
The menu is small, but the food is honest and the drinks are good. I decided to have a cocktail, and the Rumble in The Bronx stood out – totally sweet and smooth mmmm. We decided to start with the fried calamari; the squid was crispy and came with a chipotle aioli which was really good. For my main I wanted to go with the jerk chicken but they explained they had just taken it off the menu and replaced it with a lemon chicken, so I went with that. The dish as great – the chicken was fall-off-the-bone tender, it was seasoned well and came with broccolini and jasmine rice; it was really a great dish I was impressed.
Service was good, everyone was very friendly and prompt. I'm so glad I finally got to try Charlie's – and it really makes me excited for more businesses opening in this area of the Bronx. Definitely looking forward to returning!
Can't lie I feel super torn about supporting this place. Gentrification is creeping it's way into the last untouched borough of NYC (Does Staten Island count?) and as a native New Yorker I am not a fan…..but Charlie's is so damn good.
It is a great option to have close to the job. After hours it is nice to have a place to stop by for good eats/drinks.
We ordered an appetizer of mixed meats and cheeses. This came with the most amazing cheesy bread I have ever had in my life. My co-workers and are still talking about it two weeks later. It was honestly the best thing I have eaten in a VERY long time. I would go back just for the cheesy bread, no joke.
I ordered the beet salad with chicken which was DELICIOUS. I loved the different flavors and textures from the beet, chicken, goat cheese and tomato. I also tried my friends pasta dish which was amazing!
One person I was with raved about the House Margarita.
Charlie's bar was a wonderful experience. Both dining and drinking. I have been here 2 times and both times were amazing.
The decor is low lit and intimate with a nice urban vibe. The staff is very friendly.
The first time I came here I tried the fish tacos. And WOW they blew me away. I crave these fish tacos. They give u 4 crispy beer battered cod with a tangy homemade coleslaw and they r wrapped in a mini tortilla to bring it together. It is heaven on earth. I haven't found a fish taco as good as this one at Charlie's. Hats off to the chef.
The drinks are strong and will leave u with a nice buzz.
Happy hour u get 2-4-1 until 8 pm
Live music on Thursday nights.
