Charlie’s Place

“It's really hard to find a good sushi place that consistently delivers delicious food at a good price.”

“Sushi doesn't come to mind when I think of Harlem, but I'm happy to support businesses that add some culinary diversity in the area.”

“The French Roll was loved by both my girlfriend and I. They deliver, but not to my apartment only 3 avenues over (o well).”

  1. Charlie's Sushi is generally reliable and provides standard delievery sushi, nothing too fancy. Until recently this was one of the few sushi spots in this part of Harlem. My only complaint would be that sometimes it takes a while to get your delievery, I only live a few blocks away so I'm never sure what the hold up is.

There is also a space to eat-in, it is clean and fairly well maintainted.

  2. BEST SUSHI IN HARLEM
It's not hard to win that title since I can't think of any other other sushi joints in Harlem but this one would be a hit anywhere because of its reasonable prices and fresh sushi. I came around 3pm so it was empty. They have a small fridge where you can grab a roll that's already made if you're in a rush. Don't worry, they only make a few rolls at a time so they haven't been sitting there. If you're not in a rush they are happy to make any roll you request. I grabbed two rolls from the cooler because I was in a rush but they were very fresh. Often when I've gotten premade sushi at other places the rice had begun to dry out but both of the rolls I got were still fresh. (California roll $4, French roll $6 [shrimp tempura, crab, cucumber, spicy mayo])

  3. I love Charlie's Place. I have to work near 125th during the summer, and this is my go-to spot when I forget my lunch. Their hot food is okay, but I go there for the solid quality sushi at rock bottom prices. Cheap sushi just screams "I WILL GIVE YOU FOOD POISONING AND/OR A PARASITE"… however, I've eaten here several times and it's been really fresh consistently. No problems as of yet, knock on bamboo.

Super tasty spicy tuna roll for $4? Yes, please! An order of fresh edamame I can pay for with the change at the bottom of my purse ($2)? Of course! I'm also a big fan of the mildly racist "125th street roll" with fried tempura chicken, avocado, and eel sauce. It's seriously the best. Surely it's not authentic, but it's damn good.

Let it be known that this is not really a sit-down restaurant with waiter service. You go to the counter and order and they either a) give it to you in a bag because you ordered it to go or b) give it to you on a really nice plate (aww) because you ordered it to stay. Don't expect glasses of water or someone to bring you menus. It's obviously a take-out place. Use your big sexy brain and you won't have a problem.

  4. Great sushi for a small and unknown place in the middle of Harlem. Very good and fresh rolls. They have many specials and the bento box is plenty of food. The dumplings are a great starter.
Inexpensive and good quality. Definitely the sushi place for Harlem

  5. weird little sushi spot – nothing looks right about it (the location, the interior, the korean staff), but the flavors will suit you just fine when you're looking for solid sushi in a pinch.  had the spicy tuna (with and without crunch), eel cucumber roll and the hawaiian (red snapper tempura with avocado).  pretty much can't go wrong with anything drizzled with sweet eel sauce, which most of our rolls were.  by the way, they are oh so generous with crunch, so definitely add that to your rolls if you're an ultra-fan of panko, which everyone should be, unless you have dietary restrictions, which is always unfortunate, and i'll weep for you when i eat it on your behalf.

  6. Nice local place with good food and generous servings.

  7. Well my, my, my. What a pleasant surprise!

My friend Yarniece, a sushi fiend and connoisseur of all meals Asian, just moved to East Harlem and we were thinking of a spot to grab a quick, light Monday evening meal. A trip to the Upper East Side was thought of first, until she found this…where else…but good ol' Yelp!

After walking past seven cops subduing a half-naked fat screaming white guy in a toy store along 125th, walking into Charlie's Place was a figurative oasis. Pleasant jazz was playing in the background, Norah Jones crooning her mellow and sexy rendition of Roxy Music's "More Than This". I felt calm wash over me as I sat at the perfectly lit dining area, about seven tables catering to a small clientele.

The menu? Relatively small. I suppose I was expecting more, and I was surprised to not see a plain ol' avocado roll, though I could get a piece of avocado sushi a la carte. *hmmmm* Still, I went for the Madison Avenue Roll and was extremely content: sweet potato tempura and cucumber with a sweet gingery special sauce. My friend went for the mini seafood pancakes and left content. My roll was $4.95. Her pancakes were $4.00. Plus drinks, I think we both spent less than $6.50.

I feel like this place is relatively hidden, like a little secret up in Harlem. I'm almost afraid to write this review, as though I'll give away my new secret and everyone will go! Well, as long as you leave the Madison Avenue Rolls alone, I suppose I can be generous and encourage the masses to eat here…

  8. Judging by appearances, you aren't really expecting much from Charlie's but holy hell this sushi is good! Don't get the ready-made sushi from the fridge – wait and get it made fresh. Perfectly rolled, rice room temperature and fresh, great fish quality, good ratio of rice to avo to fish in rolls… Soooo good! I was told 15 minutes and had to wait 25 but I honestly didn't care. I'm still a bit in awe by how good the food was and how good those prices were!

For reference I ordered a salmon avocado roll, a spicy tuna roll and a miso soup. Yummmmmmmmmmmm.
