Charrua

“I love that it's BYOB with no corkage fee so we brought 2 bottles of wino with us and order some amazing food.”

“The place has been entirely redecorated by the new owner (of course, native from Uruguay!)”

“Not surprised, the chivitos are very similar to torta, but subbing the avocado with mozzarella cheese.”

  1. When I saw the place I thought it was cute, they had nice house music and thought the vibe was nice, BYOB, not bad. Then we ordered food and it was a mess. They never  brought our appetizer and I got the wrong meal and decided to give me something else because they didn't have what I ordered. I was hungry and decided to eat it. Food was very basic – nothing out of the ordinary. The waiter gave us a free dessert for the mistake.  The service was very poor. I wouldn't go back there.

  2. Service was definitely a bit slow here.  We came here Saturday evening and were super excited it was BYOB but then discovered it NO LONGER WAS.  So, we opted for the Sangria.  The pitchers were about the size of a bottle of wine.  There were 5 of us so we had to get 2 rounds.

We tried a bunch of different dishes, the croquetas were good, the cheese fondue was great and the sandwiches were yummy but the best dish was definitely the platter because it had a little taste of everything!  We didn't know the sandwich already came with fries so we had a ton of extra french fries.

I was a bit frustrated at the slow service, having to constantly ask where the food was, where our wine was, can we have the check etc.  I actually love Uruguay but don't love the wait staff of this restaurant.  I did however pick this joint due to the geographic convenience of being less than a 5 min walk to hotel chantelle which is where my Saturday night actually started so it was a win-win.

  3. We live across the street and finally tried Charrua. It was a really nice experience from start to finish. The owner and his staff are incredibly kind. We ordered the sampler platter (which had the chicken, steak, chorizo and empanadas). And also ordered the seasonal mojito salad (jicama, watermelon, mint, etc.) Everything was tasty and it's also great that it's BYOB. Not sure if it'll always be that way or just until they get their liquor license (the spot has only been for about 5 months if memory serves me).

At first I rarely saw it packed but these days, it seems to be super busy, though when we went on a Tuesday night at 8pm, we didn't have a problem getting a table. Glad their business is picking up!

  4. Cute place. They had live music when I came so the atmosphere was especially pleasant. Ordered skirt steak and empanadas (beef and tuna). Beef empanadas were a hit while the tuna one and the steak was just ok for me. Got a nice bottle of red and enjoyed the vibe here.

  5. This place is great for some comfort food from Uruguay. The filet mignon sandwich was cooked to perfection and big. The free dessert I got was a chocolate sausage. It was delicious and tasted like cookie dough 🙂
Service was slow but friendly. And they are bilingual.

  6. I went here a week ago for Brunch for my cousin's birthday. The restaurant was brought out for a few hours so it was intimate. The place is small, not hard to find and the décor wasn't too bad just reminded me of a small bar with more seating – they even had seating along the window seal of the place, it was cute and gave it like a homey feel. It was Brunch but the food didn't come out too quick – maybe they don't do groups too often, who knows – but my drink ratio was too high I had to sit down especially because the mimosas barely had orange juice in them. The champagne they used in the mimosas wasn't preferable either but when in ROME.
We were served appetizers – empanadas (beef, corn, tuna), meatballs, and croquets (one was ham and cheese and the other was mushroom). For the entrée they had different choices between sandwiches and basically meat and egg combos.

Now for the review. This place to me definitely was Latin based on their cuisine – there were barely any options that didn't include pork so given I don't eat pork I was limited and on my way to inebriation. My main dish, I wish I was able to reorder it because I wasn't happy the minute I saw it – I ordered chicken and eggs. I ended up getting pan fried chicken with over easy eggs – YUCK!… unlike some I like my eggs cooked not running away from me so that was a big turn off and due to the thinness of the cut of chicken being pan fried wasn't the best option so the chicken was dry. The menu didn't make it seem like the eggs would be sunny side up (which in general I think is just a lazy way to cook an egg) and the waiter didn't inform me either so service wise I wasn't a happy camper. Besides it seemed like the whole time they were simply trying to keep up with the party – especially given that it was only two of them trying to cater to 15 plus people. And the French fries were really lacking.

Overall, I think if this place didn't serve you alcohol their crowd would be scarce and selective given their limited menu and not even because there's tons of pork options but mainly because they're menu from start to finish is a one sided page. I don't know if I'll be back, I didn't really have anything there too appealing but my husband seemed to like it so who knows.

  7. This is a cute little brunch place. I came here because all the brunch places were packed but I'm glad i came across this place. The service is amazing. Waiter was always attentive. It was nice and quiet. They had a good selection on their menu. Will definitely come here again!

  8. Uraguayan brunch you say? Unlimited mimosas and sangrias? Yes I'm in!
My cousin's fiancée rented this spot out for a few hours for his 30th birthday celebration. Service was great, but when you're the only party in the place why wouldn't it be. But the 2 guys there seemed very friendly and nice.
Appetizers were interesting. Empanadas (corn, beef and tuna) yummy. Meatballs, chorizo and croquettes.
Entree I had  a filet mignon sandwich. It had all the fixings.  I was nice and full after that yummy meal.
Dessert was nothing to write home to, but they had these chocolate striped cookies that were so delicious.
