  1. Yummy affordable Mexican food to sate your belly and leave you feeling thankful this place knows how to make a mean potato hash.

    Lots of space but boy does it get packed on the weekends! Their weekend brunch specials are too lit though – Mexican sweet bread (to. die. for.), coffee/tea/juice, and a hearty meal for like 14 bucks. You can't get better than that.

    Service is fast, efficient, and friendly. Come here for a good meal and a pleasant time!

  2. DEFINITELY A 5 STAR WORTHY RESTAURANT! Chavela's is a cute corner spot restaurant with quaint and inviting decor. We came in and it was busy, but we were just a party of 2 so we got to sit without a wait. I wanted to try the brunch when I came here on Sunday, but we had just missed the end of brunch so we ordered off the regular menu.
    As appetizers we got the guacamole and the chicken quesadilla. The  guac was heavenly, seriously so delicious, and the fried tortillas they serve it with makes it so much better. The quesadilla was small as our server us when we ordered it, but we wanted to try it anyway. It was delicious, but next time we will order two, because it's too small to split.
    As an entrees we got a salad with grilled chicken and the PLATO DON! The Plato Don is such a great idea for taco lovers because what's better than building your own tacos. The chicken and steak the Plato Don came with was outrageous, the taste was just spot on.
    The service was great, regardless of who took our order anyone other worker who was around would come over to see if we needed anything else or a refill of a cocktail.
    I can not wait to come back here, it's worth the trip if you're not from this part of Brooklyn!

  3. Food: 3.5/5.0
    Service: 3.0/5.0
    Value: 3.0/5.0
    Decor: 2.5/5.0
    Overall: 3.5/5.0

    Decent food that's in-line with any 'good' Mexican spot.  Wildly over-rated especially given the content of some prior reviews.  The tortillas in my enchiladas were way overdone but I accept that was probably just a one-off.  But even ignoring this, and after staring intently at my buddy's plate for a while (:D), the food just didn't seem stand out at all.  This place is borderline three/four Yelp stars for me.

  4. I love Chavela's. The spot it's in is really cool with a lot of cool Mexican decor. The drinks are off the chain (best margarita I've ever had, on the rocks with salt). The trio of salsas are awesome, very fresh with nice flavors. Every entree I've ever had here has been excellent, Mexican Meatballs, tacos, beans and rice, flautas… Service is very good and they have outdoor seating for the summer months. Not too pricey and excellent quality, so it's a good value. I will try to come here every time I'm in Brooklyn.

  5. We came in on a Tuesday evening after drinking at a bar near by. When we entered it was pretty busy with patrons having dinner and sitting around the bar. All I really have to say about Chavela's is AVOCADO AND CHEESE TORTA!!!!! It was seriously so delicious. Our server was super kind and patient with us as all of us had a few cocktails that evening. Everyone seemed satisfied with their food. My friend sitting next to me had the ribs and she finished every last bit so I'm sure they received her seal of approval. I will definitely be returning to try a margarita or two.

  6. This is one of the first spots I visited upon moving to crown heights, and it's probably the restaurant that I have visited the most.

    I always go here for brunch because they have a great 13.00 deal where you get a brunch meal, coffee, tea, or juice and Mexican sweet bread. It's pretty great.

    I've also been a couple of the times to the bar for snacks and drinks.

    I'd recommend:
    * huevos con rajas for brunch
    * bistec for brunch
    * mushroom empanada
    * THE MICHELADA. Omg so good. My favorite.
    * the hot sauce, it's home made and is outstaaaanding.

    I'm a big fan of the overall vibe and decor of the place. The colorful ceilings in both the main and side dining room.

    I've had a few service experiences that make me take one star away (cold food, plates cleared prematurely, plates brought out at different times).

    But all in all, I eat here all the time and will continue to.

  7. Dining alfresco on Franklin Ave. Where dey do dat! When you were privy to life in "old" Brooklyn when there were not much dining options, it's amazing to see a Mexican restaurant thrive on Franklin Ave.

    Chavela's has an old esthetic like it's been here forever. It's a cool restaurant with courteous staff, that constantly fill your glass and tasty Mexican eats. My garlic shrimp ($10) was flavorful but the portion size was a bit small. The guacamole ($8) was delicious! The guac was a chock full o' onions, firm ripe tomatoes and seasonings. There are happy hour specials that last until 7pm m-f. After I sucked down my sangria, the alcohol infused fruit at the bottom of the glass was a treat.

    You have to love the dining al fresco option. You are completely oblivious to the street activity once you are in the confines of Chavela's flower boxes. I still highly suggest you #staywoke while you enjoy your margaritas.

  8. The name makes me think of the Portuguese word for keys (chaves) so I guess it was pretty appropriate that their Mojito Happy Hour drink special tasted like a capirinha sans the pucker of baby limes. I would go back for that drink, if nothing else, although their pescado taco (Baja style fried tilapia, chipotle mayo, cabbage, pico de gallo & lime…mmmm) and carne echilada (pork enchilado, cilantro, pineapple & salsa verde….oh my!) are worth another visit. My only peeve is that the tables are packed so very close together that if the folks next to you aren't aware, they will knock your glasses over, hit you with their bags/asses/elbows and make it nearly impossible to get up and renter if you need to go use the toilet. Thank you to the sweet couple on the right who laughed along with us at the brute strength we used to shift our tables for all of the above NOT to happen.

    Sit at the bar or at the high tops by the windows. Save the arm workout for the gym.
