Me and my lady eat like slobs when we hit up Checkers. The bacon cheese burgers and fries are top notch. Its actually the only fast food I eat.
As for the customer service? I dont want these people being my friends, its a FAST FOOD JOINT people! As long as they get my damn BACONZILLA, who cares if they have an attitude. I'd have an attitude too, if I worked there and couldnt steal a fry here and there from a customers bag….right?
WHY DOESN'T THIS CHECKERS HAVE 5 STARS?
I'd hate to admit this but I actively go out of my way to test and compare every Checkers in New York City, and out of every single Checkers I've been to, this is the only one you should go to. Actually the one on 161st comes really close but my heart goes out to the Bay Plaza one. My only qualm with this particular store is that there isn't any indoor seating, so it's make for a terrible rainy day trip. But on better weather, the outdoor seating is eerily cozy.
What's exactly perfect about this Checkers is that they don't disappoint. In fact, this is what I imagine a multiple orgasm must feel like. I can't begin to list the spot on perfection of their fast food. I mean, the fries are ALWAYS crispy on the outside and delicate on the inside and they're NEVER stale. This is actually the only Checkers I've had that I enjoy their fries. It's cheap and I'm really writing this review for you meat lovers. Have you ever bought a bacon burger expecting it to be absolutely the best thing that can happen that day and find that 1) wherever you're buying it from is skimpy on the bacon, 2) the already small amounts of bacon is soggy, and 3) there's a ton greens in the way?
Well, this Checkers has never given me any of those problems. Some places give you two strips of bacon; one time I found 5 in my Baconzilla. They're always crisp and they don't even bother to put in lettuce, which at other fast food joints offend me because if I'm going for any sort of bacon burger, I don't feel like going the extra mile to try and convince myself that since there's vegetables it has to be healthy.
Seriously, I live a block away from the 161st one and if I'm ever in the mood for Checkers, I'd make the hour and a half – two hour trip to this place.
I've seen an occasional Checkers chain but never been to one until now. For those of you who haven't been the menu is a cross between McDonald's and Nathan's (in that they have hot dogs as well as hamburgers and things like fish sandwiches). This spot is just a drive thru as well as a small interior with a ordering and pickup window (no indoor seats but there were a few outdoor tables for warmer weather). The Checkers brand has the styling of a friendly 50s car hop/diner but the tiny dirty spot has some of the worst unfriendly service I've ever had from any business. It was so bad in fact that I didn't even get mad and me and my friend just had to stop and laugh at one another we were so appalled at how slow and antisocial the workers here were. The burgers were thicker than the standard McDonald's burger but still small compared to anything else and were slightly drier and more tasteless than the other fast food chains, the shake was ridiculously thick (almost to the Wendy's frosty thickness) and could barely get through the straw, they were also pretty tasteless and I could barely get the hint of chocolate in my chocolate shake. The shining star in this pile of crap spot is their fries, wonderfully hot and seasoned fries that are better than any other fast food fry I've had. I'd run through the drive thru for some of their fries in the future but that's about it.
I have to agree with Oriana. This place has good PMS comfort food.
I sometimes get in the mood for greasy food. And I mean, oily, bag-soaking, transparent wrapper kind of greasy. And Checkers delivers.
[You heard me loud and clear, McDonald's. Your grease factor is faltering.]
Anyway, to save some cash, I ordered a Checkerburger and small fries, which was in the neighborhood of three dollars. [For drinks, you have to sneak over to a bodega and get an Arizona tea]
The food was hot and pretty fresh…love the fries. I munched them while walking, I'll admit… I would say that they've improved over the years.
