Cherin Sushi
“this is my GO TO sushi spot in the city, great prices espically if you go during Happy Hour, 3 rolls for $9 and 4 rolls for $12.”
“And they have a BYOB policy and didn't even charge us a corking fee for the bottle of wine someone brought.”
“In the past year my friends and I have become regulars here and the early bird specials are pretty great for right before a night of drinking.”

BYOB + sushi (minimum spend is $15) = awesome.
There is no corkage which is great, because I had to bring several bottles. Also, the spicy miso soup is amazing. I don't know what they put in it to make it spicy, but you must order it. I just had the regular sushi set, which comes with a roll. They are very creative with rolls, the Helen Roll, Jenny Roll? etc… which means that this place isn't that authentic but for $15, I'll live with it.
We were given plastic cups to drink our alcohol from, classy I know. They later came to offer us proper cups instead of the cheap plastic cups that you use at parties, but being classy people, we said the cheap plastic cups were perfect.
Then boom boom boom…. a drunk group of people enter the restaurant and decide that shouting is the way to go. I don't know how they have conversations screaming at the top of their voices, which forced everyone else to start shouting as well. This is not a frat party, ok?
There is a unisex toilet at the back, it was ok in terms of cleanliness.
The dinner special is a pretty good deal — most of the individual rolls were listed at $5+ so 3 rolls for $11.95 is great. But, the rolls sucked!
A lot of the rolls were the same ingredients but assembled differently. They used very little rice, which I like, but they also used very little filling. The rice was not cooked correctly — soft and mushy, and the rolls I ordered with crab filling was just bad. The crab had this gritty texture and along with the crunch, just made it so dry.
I have no plans on returning.
A pretty solid BYOB place! Went to astor place wine and liquors before to pick up a bottle of white, and came with a friend who was visiting nyc from out of town. Docking a few stars because the service here was abysmal, we had to ask our waiter for the check THREE times! But the prices are cheap so that is a plus
Last time I did some hanging out in the East Village, it was in the late 80's and I can assure you, it wasn't sushi that I was looking for.
Fast forward a million years, the streets under my feet speak of an uneven familiarly, it felt comfortable, I've laid footprints here before, no kidding, I could almost feel it.
"Better to be 20 minutes early than 2 minutes late" rang in my ears, as I pondered the far rear, borderline backyard table location I was given.
Sipping on my $7.00 Large (happy hour) house saki, my cheeks became flush with rosy hues as I continued to continuously press the hot saki to my lips and quickly found myself two deep, and enjoying the visuals of the rapidly filling single sided and unassuming eatery.
After a quick thought session with the committee, I decided to move to the front of the restaurant for a view of East 6th, watch people flounce up and down the sidewalk. That idea was dashed immediately, reseating myself at the midway point once the delivery man thrust open the front door and the Arctic down bursts came slashing inside.
Quickly ordering two rolls, I noticed Cherin is kinda big on crabmeat as a roll stuffer, so as the sushi rolls kept coming, not mango nor avocado could tone down that taste, it wouldn't leave me alone. We consumed close to seven sushi rolls if basic arithmetic was serving me.
The sheer quantity of food and drink consumed and the check that pleasantly surprised me, its hard to knock Cherin over minor matters.
Great place to go for BYOB. The atmosphere is very lively and everyone is there on a mission to drink.
For the price the sushi is ok, I ordered the sashimi and was underwhelmed. The rolls are ok and worth the price you pay. I was a little annoyed at the menu because they named every roll, so you're digging through the menu to find the rolls you like.
Service was below average. We really liked one piece of fish from the sashimi and when we asked our waiter if he could ask the sushi chef what type of fish it was, his response was, "you ate it already, I don't know." We were taken aback by this comment.
Overall, the whole experience was ok. Honestly my company made the experience much better than it actually was. I would only recommend this place to someone on a mission to find a cheap BYOB place in nyc with ok food
The sushi quality isn't great, but they have a happy hour deal where you can get sushi at lunch special prices during dinner time. In fact, Mondays have that same deal for up till midnight, so it's awesome.
DO NOT get anything that says there's crab in it if you don't want artificial crabmeat. (The menu says the crabmeat is real, but that's a total lie.) I would recommend getting the simplest roll possible, with just one fish, if you don't want your roll to be stuffed full of fried breadcrumbs or sauce or mayo.
This restaurant is BYOB and appears to be more of a delivery place, the sit-down area is kind of sad but more privacy, I guess!
five stars for getting full off of sushi at $25 a person
five stars for no corkage fee BYOB
three stars for quality… but no one should be complaining at these prices
you'll also end up waiting on yourself.. service is abysmal. but again… for slightly above average quality sushi at such low prices… WHAT DO YOU EXPECT?
really cannot wait to return… already have dinner plans for next week
The #1 draw of this place is that it's BYOB. We came on a Saturday night and it was POPPIN! Even though it's kind of small, there were lots of groups packed in to here. We were a fairly large group of around 15 and they gave us platters of sushi and appetizers for the table to share and it came out to around $25 per person – which is very very reasonable for the amount of sushi we got and the fairly good quality of food.
All in all, great value, pretty good food, and BYOB is always a plus for me!
