  1. I'm pretty sure whoever is reading this (or I assume) knows what Chevy's is and has been there at least once in their life. However, each location does differ especially with regards to the atmosphere and layout of the restaurant. This particular Chevy's chain is not really much to write home about, but it's not terrible either. I have been to a few different locations, the biggest one being in Times Square. The one in Linden, however, is quite lackluster and mediocre in terms of the atmosphere, food and service. You walk in and enter a restaurant that is mid-sized with generic Mexican themed decor. The slightly harsh, bright overhead lighting does not really add to the whole mood of the place. They have tables and comfortable booths though, so it's good for groups. The one thing at Chevy's that make up for all it's mediocrity are their margaritas. I do recommend that you try something called the Red-Nosed Bulldog which is basically a margarita infused with a bottle of Corona. It's pretty to look at, and it's delicious if you like sweet cocktails. Their other regular margaritas are all really good, albeit sweet, but you can get a good buzz after 2 or 3 of these. They have a wonderful selection of delicious margarita flavors for a fair price, so for that, I give Chevy's a two thumbs up.

As soon as you sit down, they give you a free serving of grocery style salsa and chips. For entree, I ordered the shimp and crab quesadilla. It's a generous sized meal, even good enough for 2 people. The tortilla shell alone was a little overcooked/a little oily in my opinion, and it could have used a lot more filler as it didn't seem so sufficient. I could barely taste the shrimp or crab, but mostly the pesto sauce. Otherwise, it was tasty enough to be edible. There are other dishes here that I can recommend, especially if you have a big appetite. Some of their better entrees include the chicken fajitas and fajita burritos. Nonetheless, this is not a bad Chevy's to check out if you just want simple Americanized Mexican food. Coming here with some friends added to the experience, and so then, it was easy to disregard some of the drawbacks that Chevy's may have suffered from. Comparing to the qualities of some other locations I have been to though, this one slightly felt a notch lower.

  2. Unfortunately I have to revise my former review. Over the past two years since I left my initial review, pretty much everything I liked about this place has changed. Gone is the 3-course price fixe menu, gone are the $3 margaritas, gone is the Latin style music that they used to play. Instead, the house margaritas are now $6, the menu full of oversized dishes with no option to order a smaller portion, and perhaps most annoyingly, an obnoxious bingo/trivia night in the evening where the host insults the people in the bar area to get them to participate in his games. It was so bad that when I was there last time I had to get my food wrapped up to go to escape his shenanigans.

Will I go back?  Probably, but only since this place is literally a 3 minute drive from my house. But this will no longer be my go to place when I have friends and family in town to visit.

  3. Dropped in real quick for a drink before the movie started. I was in the mood for a beer. The beer was refreshing and filling. The bartender also supplied us with warm nachos and salsa. The nachos were crispy and delicious,  I didn't need an appetizer.

  4. It was not bad… we were a group of 10 so they did struggle to keep on top of things for us.  Some food came out early, some came out late, and some sides didn't come out until after we were done eating.  But the food was good and they did an okay job for such a large group.

  5. I usually love Chevys but this one has as much ambiance as an exorcism on Easter.  I guess the food is the same as the other places, but the ambiance in the one in Clifton is really what keeps me coming back. I came here during the week for happy hr and service was slow and it was not even busy. I will not be returning to this location but will be happy to spend my $ in the Clifton branch.

As for food if you must eat, eat these cheap eats under $12:
Chicken Fajita nachos – I don't trust the beef.
Tableside Guacamole – totally worth the $10 bc you get like 3 whole avocados.
Flautas – I don't know what that spicy orange sauce is, but I like it off my plate when I'm done.
Chicken Chimichanga – When in doubt…Chimichanga it up!

I hate the wings. Seriously, Mexicans don't make good wings, and apparently either do ppl in Chevys. Don't bother with their crappy fried ice cream either, go for the real thing at a Japanese place. lol

  6. I am disappointed with my experience at Chevy's in Linden. Tables were sticky and covered in crayon drawings from previous child diners. Waiter was very attentive although he did not bring everybody waters and somebody was missing a silverware set. We asked if the guacamole (they make it at your table) contained salt, and he said no, but it was super salty. Primarily I am writing this review because my order came about 10-15 minutes after everybody else's at my table. The waiter apologized and said something to the extent of "sorry, they just don't make that dish often so they messed it up." What was my dish, you ask? A bean and cheese burrito and a vegetable burrito. This is possibly the easiest thing to make out of everybody else's orders? Clearly this is not the fault of the waiter, but of the kitchen staff. Having a dish come after everybody else has already finished their meals entirely unacceptable. Additionally, nothing was done on their part for damage control. I would have appreciated more than a simple "sorry" from the waiter, because my dining experience was ruined. As far as the food quality goes ( for my vegetarians out there), I would definitely recommend getting the farmers market fajita instead of the combo deal with bean and/or veggie burritos because the burritos (when they in fact finally arrived) contained the exact same black beans from a can that they filled the rest of the plate with as a side dish.

  7. We had a group of 15 people that came in last night.  We have been here a couple times after business meetings in the area.  The service was slow – our drinks did not fully come out until after our food arrived and they were slow to check back on us during the meal.  The food was ok.  The restaurant was extremely loud – it was Margarita Wednesday, they had the tunes cranking, and there were quite a few people that had quite a few margaritas.  This, of course, made conversation very difficult.  If you are looking for a loud place to get your drink on with some cheap beer-ritas and pretend that you are eating Mexican food, then this is your place.  If you are looking for a place to have some casual conversation while enjoying good food and drink, then move along because there is nothing to see here.
