A co-worker recommended this place to me, as she swears by the super cheap rolls. And while I was initially skeptical of not only the way the pricing would work out with "hidden costs" and what not, I also had doubts about the quality of the sushi.
Those fears were all put to rest. Color me quite impressed. First of all, for being a restaurant that maybe seats 20-30 with a sushi bar to accommodate, they have a staggering number of rolls. There are a few dozen of them that go for $2.50, and several dozen more priced $3.00-$9.50. Most pieces are also $1. It's almost worth considering this place "all you can eat" if you stick to the $2.50 roll/$1 piece menu, because only the truly gifted can put away more than ten rolls in a sitting, which is about what you'd pay at most AYCE places in the city.
Second the quality. Wow. I've paid a lot more for "average" sushi, and gotten much worse. Not only were the rolls fresh and well made, but the flavors were distinct.
I got an Alaska roll which is supposed to come with "salmon" and a Philadelphia roll which is supposed to come with "smoked salmon". Most times at your average sushi place, there is no difference in the fish. However Chikurin's smoked salmon is so good it's bagel-worthy. That and the ratio of ingredients in the roll were perfect. I tried a shrimp tempura roll and was similarly blown away with how light and still crispy the tempura was, despite being in a roll. The dynamite roll (which I splurged and spent $3.00 on) had huge pieces of fish inside, and again was very well made.
I recommend checking it out on a weeknight, as then B runs express to Kings Highway, and it's a lot faster than the Q going local. You won't be blow away by its decor. And the service, while fine, isn't anything above and beyond. But do come for the fact that you can eat like king on a pauper's wage.
Got a chance to stop by this place for lunch with some friends. Being 12 pm, the place was not busy at all and we were seated immediately. From an abundant menu selections, the choices are endless and I opted for sushi and took advantage of their lunch special of 2 rolls and a side of soup for under $8.
The miso soup was ok as it seemed to be thicker than the traditional miso soup. Nonetheless, it was good. The two roll options I chose were the shrimp tempura and the other was the avocado roll. Both were good options and didn't realize till later that spicy mayo was extra and needed to be ordered separately.
overall, decent service, decent food, great prices…!
When I frist step in this sushi place it was so welcoming and the area itself is clean and nice…the people who work there are so attentive which is awesome… But the food wasn't so awesome… I order two rolls and my friend also had two rolls and and some green tea ice cream … I sat there for like a good hour I never waited for sushi for such a long time … Like you just roll that stuff with rice right?? no need to cook it gosh …I really don't like waiting for food that long when I'm hunger and when the food actually comes out from the sushi bar I got soo excited for no reason …my first taste and I didn't like it … Weird that my friend said all sushi taste the same … Yea ok …not everything taste the same …I guess I have a really picky palate.. But I still felt like this is my second worst experience with sushi… I really like sushi… I don't like it when my food taste so bland…ughh I was sooo disappointed… The only reason this place get two stars for the kindness and politeness… But that place was packed when I was there so deceiving… To think a packed and crowded restaurant is a good sign… But in reality it just a place to get drunk with sake…hang out place for teens and people in there early 20s defiantly not a place For me! Blahhh
A very consistent local sushi place that I have enjoyed many times. Relatively nice, casual ambiance. They can accommodate surprisingly large groups and have private seating areas available (probably by reservation, unless they happen to be available). The staff are attentive, helpful, and polite. The service is pretty quick, but at times slowed by how much take out business they do. I like seeing that they do a consistent volume of business because it reassures me that everything is fresh. The pricing is always quite good and the lunch special is a real bargain if you are looking for basic rolls with a soup or salad.
I love this Chikurin!
It's not as loud as the one in Sheepshead. The sushi is fresh and they waiters are always nice and welcoming. This is my go-to sushi spot when I want to eat and enjoy a little powwow with a friend.
Must try: Rock Shrimp appetizer
Unlike other chikurins, this one gives you a lot for the price!
I really like chikurin. I usually go to the one on ocean ave and ave m but since they're renovating, I decided to try a different location. Just as good! It's slightly more expensive than the one on ave m but the taste is the same. I also really like the decor.
It's a decent Japanese sushi place. The price is moderate. It's good for ignorant Westerners to introduce them to Asian cuisine for the first time. The wait staff is not knowledgeable in Japanese cuisine or termology. Tonkatsu is the same as breaded chicken or pork. The offer the traditional bento box. I've had better elsewhere.
I'm writing this before I succumb to the inevitable food coma that is my near future. This was my first time at Chikurin but it definitely won't be my last; my entire experience was completely satisfying.
First of all, if you're driving here, definitely come during Shabbat. Midwood is usually crazy hard to find parking, but at 7pm on a Friday there were a million spots right outside the restaurant.
It wasn't packed and we were seated right away. The waiters were friendly and attentive; they took our orders as soon as we were ready and we didn't wait long to get our food. Everything was extremely fresh and beyond delicious. I had my usual beef negamaki, Philly roll, and tuna/avocado roll. I also sampled my friend's orange dragon roll, which is something I'll definitely order in the future. I also tried their special tuna roll and it might be my new favorite roll ever, which is part of the reason I'll be a regular here from now on. For dessert, we had the fried ice cream and I was a huge fan of how it was served. Instead of frying a ball of ice cream, they prepared it so it was ice cream inside of a nice little fried cup. So much neater and easier to eat.
If you're in the area and you like Japanese, Chikirun is definitely worth visiting.
