When the Chop't on Broadway between 41st and 42nd right across from my office closed last year, I was pretty broken-hearted. Sure, they told me that they'd be reopening a new, bigger, better branch nearby shortly, but I assumed that was the business equivalent of "It's not you, it's me" and that I'd be stuck with the much longer walk to the inferior, always out of half the ingredients Bryant Park Chop't. So imagine my pleasant surprise when this gleaming new Chop't started springing up right around the corner from the old one.
First impressions are solid all around. I arrived about 15 minutes before closing, nervous they might already be mostly closed/out of everything, but all systems were go – the salad bar and toppings were completely full and the staff was incredibly friendly, efficient and solicitous, from suggesting different salad dressing options for the new destination salads to chatting me up about the Mets. The place looked clean and relatively spacious – I generally take out from Chop't and look at their seating as perfunctory at best, but this didn't seem like a bad place to sit in if need be or so desired. I noticed they are tinkering around with their menu again, and I always fear change at least a bit, but I'm trying to look past that and just be happy to have a closer, more efficient Chop't nearby again.
This is a new location after the one around the corner closed. The line at ANY Chopt is always a disaster. Since the long and disorganized line was to be expected, I give this location four stars because the decor, cleanliness and friendliness of staff is 10x better than the old spot.
What a delicious, delicious salad chain restaurant. You're in control of packing in as many fresh ingredients as possible, different kinds of greens, too. It's chopped right in front of you, and the price is pretty decent for smack dab in the middle of NYC. I got two premium mix-ins with my salad and it cane up to about $10 with their hibiscus green tea from the fountain.
They also have specialty bowls that focus on local fare. It's easy for vegans to create meals here as well. But on this visit, I had the chipotle chicken with pepper jack cheese, black beans, corn, red cabbage, and tomatoes on a kale blend and romaine mix. Plant enthusiasts can combine the different greens for their salad base here with no hesitation. Mine was chopped with their lemon basil dressing that they hold up to you while they pour so you can say when.
It was pretty empty the rainy Saturday afternoon I dropped in. I'm sure it gets hectic for lunch on the weekdays as they're healthy and affordable. But what I got to see this particular day was the employees on their lunch break sitting right next to me and enjoying their Chopt lunch together. Now this I don't take lightly. You ever have a friend that said, "Oh my God, don't eat there. I used to work there. So filthy." I haven't, but can you imagine??
I'm also glad that this place is open on the weekends even on a side street to cater to weekend warriors like myself.
