  1. Lapin and I cam here for a early dinner on a Saturday afternoon.  We tried making reservation several times but was told they were busy. After 4 attempts, we finally got a reservation but they said there might be a wait. When we got there around 5pm on a Saturday afternoon, the cozy place was deserted.

We were the only diner for about an hour before it started raining. Then another group of diners joined us.  The service was a bit slow and instead of clearing away dishes and refilling our water they kind of stood there giggling. They also were fooling around and dropped two dishes.

We ordered the Camaron (shrimp) tacos, which were tasty. For $9.50 for three tacos, we though it should have came with something else. Lapin ordered the Camaron y Pulpo (shrimp and octopus) which he liked but he wouldn't order it again. I ordered the Camarones al Ajilio (shrimp with garlic sauce) which was delicious but it was 3 shrimp with a tiny piece of bread. For $8.50, it would have been to have at least 3 pieces of bread to dip the leftover sauce. We got the Pescado Citrico which was good but a bit too citrus-y for our taste.  It was definitely worth the $14 since it was a whole snapper and came with beans and rice (which they forgot to give us and we had to remind them several times).  We also got the Jarritos in Orange and Hibiscus which was an interesting treat.

The food was good and affordable but I wish we had better service and maybe then we wouldn't be so 50/50 upon returning.

  2. This place has a cozy charm about it, I like it.

    We started off with:
    – Guacamole: I really enjoyed the pomegranate seeds in this dish. It added such a refreshing quality to the guac. I did think there was too much black pepper though and the pomegranate seeds probably provided the much needed freshness to the palate.
    – Esquites(corn off the cobb with cohja cheese, chipotle-mayo, chili powder, lemon & epazote) – I know the description says "corn off the cob" but for some reason I was expecting corn on the cob with cheese/chili like a lot of other Mexican places. However, a corn soup-like dish appeared and I was pleasantly intrigued. I enjoyed it.
For my main dish, I got the shrimp tacos, which were slightly fishy tasting and small shrimp, for the dish, I think its on the more expensive end as there were no sides that came with it and the tacos were small-ish.

  3. Nahhhhh.  As my mom famously says:  "This food ain't got no taste!."  I tried the fish tacos that everyone raves about and I was pretty disappointed.  With each bite I was scrambling to find that flavor and came up short.  The BF agreed.

Service was nice and swift but dang son.  Where's the flavor?

  4. It's your no frills basic mexican restaurant. Service was ok but ambiance is bare bones. On a hot summer day you won't get A/C here but rather opened windows that made it quite muggy inside. In the end you come here for 2 items in my opinion. The fish tacos. Fried up well with ample tasty fish on a nice flat topped heated tortilla. Wonderful sauce that matched up well with the fish taco. The guacamole. Nice chunky avocados mashed up and flavored well with pomegranates which was this places special twist on it. A nice refreshing horchata can be had here as well with sprinkled cinnamon on top. If in the area for a snack or a small meal those would be the items to go for.

  5. There's something here called the Tinga Quesadilla. It's amazing, like a Mexican pizza. You should get it. But while you're at it, try the fish tacos (yum!).

My advice? Get the food to go, since it's small and likely to be packed at peak hours.

  6. Very solid traditional mexican fare, everything was nice and fresh!

  7. "Where can I find good Mexican food in Prospect Heights?" Citrico is your answer. Small, homey, and warm, Citrico is your place to get a Mexican meal that is beautiful to look at, beyond enjoyable to eat, and yet unpretentious. We started our meal with a very solid guacamole that had…wait for it…pomegranate seeds! I loved how the crunch, flavor, and red coloring complemented the guac. But what really stuck out were the duck and mushroom enchiladas – I never knew such a combination existed! The mole sauce was thick and smoky just the way I like it, and the crema, raddish, and tortillas were so lovingly arranged that I had to wait a minute before I could dig in. The savory duck and soft mushroom go together nicely, and for me, added an almost French touch to a Mexican standard.

The space is a little small, but with such friendly service, it actually is an for Citrico. You feel relaxed here. So for Mexican food in Prospect…check out Citrico.

  8. I came across this place on groupon, and decided to get the groupon because the Yelp reviews were pretty good. With the groupon, the restaurant required a reservation, so we made one for 7pm on a Thursday night. It was kind of weird they needed a reservation because the place was empty when we got there and the only people that came in were people who called in phone orders. The ambience is nothing special but the food on the other hand was delicious and authentic real deal Mexican food.
For an app we got steak quesadillas and these gorditas de frijol which were black beans stuffed into tortillas and with queso fresco on top. The gorditas were like OMG I could of ordered them 100 more times and still wanted more, so delicious! For entrees we each got two tacos and a toastada. I got the bistec taco which was skirt steak and the pulled pork taco and than the tinga tostada. I loved the bistec taco and the tinga tostada, the pulled pork taco was okay.
The food was good, really fresh and authentic, the ambience was super casual and the staff was really friendly and helpful. I would definitely recommend for anyone to go and try it atleast once. Oh and on a side note they don't have margaritas so don't go there if you expect to get one, I had to learn that the hard way !
