One of the better places to eat in Elizabeth. You have to get their chicharron, some of the best i've ever had. Their Empanadas are pretty yummy too. I don't think i've ever been disappointed by the food here. The white rice can be a little hard at times and the maduros undercooked, but the entree's are good. Music can be overbearingly loud.
I love city tavern. If i'm ever in Elizabeth, this is my go to place. Good sangria, GREAT guacamole (prepared table side). This is the only place i get skirt steak now. That's how bad they have spoiled me. I seem to be let down everywhere else i go. good service and not pricey at all. PS.THIS IS NOT A CUBAN RESTAURANT!! if anything, it would be considered Colombian. But it's Latin American.
Love this place…and so does all my friends and family!
I love the RED sangria, guacamole, the skirt steaks, all the chicken dishes and the breaded steak… the garlic butter is to die for too
place can be loud especially on weekends/dinner time. there is a bar with TV everywhere and loud music playing from juke box.
service is hit or miss…so if you can have a moderate noise level nite with a good waiter- then you will have an excellent time.
The food is pretty good here. The drinks were sweet and strong just how I like it. The sangria was pretty good also. Overall the prices are decent. I have been meaning to go back when I'm in the area; however, the parking is a pain!
This very unassuming corner bar in downtown Elizabeth is a great place to get drinks and a satisfying meal. The staff is good-looking, smartly dressed, professional and friendly. The restaurant is not strictly Spanish food but the menu does lean in that direction. Tonight my friend and I chose the tilapia special, sautéed in red sauce with chopped olives. Entrees come with two sides; choose from tostones, fried plantain or yuca, white/yellow rice, fries or salad. Wine glasses are filled right to the top. Warm Italian bread is served with an herb butter until the entrees are ready. The chef had a light touch with the spice and I found the entree to be very good. As the time passes the music gets louder and the restaurant gets livelier. Prices are fair. City Tavern is definitely worth checking out if you're in the downtown Elizabeth area.
This place never disappoints! I have been here several times. Definitely the hometown feel with a great atmosphere and even better food. We often stop after church for a "light" meal which usually results in us leaving with enough food for the next day's lunch. From salads to pastas to chorizo to shrimp to steak-you cannot go wrong in this place. I have never been less than satisfied and the prices are more than fair. The sangria is excellent and the staff is very friendly! Like others have mentioned, they often greet you or speak to you in Spanish, which is fine for me, but don't worry there are plenty that do speak English. It's nice to see familiar faces and the staff are always attentive. They also are open until 2 and sometimes 3am Thurs-Sun and the kitchen is always open late night. P.S. The garlic butter and warm bread are to die for. A favorite of ours and I can't wait to get back! Just prepared to get sleepy afterwards from all the goodness and have yummy leftovers!
First time coming here, what a great local gem, this place was packed on a Saturday night. The outside looks like a unassuming bar, I'm sure at one point in the past it was just a bar.
When a menu has a whole entire page dedicated to skirt steak – you must get it! Perfectly cooked, another one of those tricky cuts of meat to cook well – they have it down pat!
We also had the chicharonnes, which for fried pork belly were not greasy at all! Octopus appetizer was cooked well – nice and tender! Sangria was OK – more wine and sprite than anything else.
Wait staff were nice and attentive, but typically for this area, only speak Spanish – get to pointing!
Great, great place in Elizabeth, will definitely return!
City Tavern is a staple in the town of Elizabeth. Everyone knows the name. Its a warm cozy place with a friendly atmosphere. Its definitely a good place for small or large groups. It has a well stocked bar and boasts of its three different types of Sangria. The food is Spanish style with very large portions. The seafood paella was good, the rice was not over seasoned and the mix of fish gave the rice flavor. I tried some of the chicken dishes with rice and found no flavor on the chicken and was bland. Appetizers are small but good more like tapas style so I suggest to get a few.
