Wow, this newcomer to the West Village dining scene opens up as enchantingly as the unfurling bloom. Firstly, let me tell you about the service. On a humid afternoon, I was crossing Seventh Avenue when I espied a woman serving samples of drinks. Normally I eschew samples proffered outside, since I am quite acquainted with NYC soot by constantly having to clean my windowsills. But she was so friendly, so welcoming, I took what was known as the draft latte sample since the poor woman was standing outside in the sun trying to give samples away. The draft latte is a brilliant idea, a refreshingly cool, foamy, creamy coffee drink that comes out like draft beer. It tasted like liquid coffee ice cream, without all the sugar. The enthusiastic lady persuaded me to go inside.
And dazzled I was. I wasn't prepared for a take out place that had stairs leading to up to a dining area with a skylight. The interior is beautiful, with wooden accents, plants everywhere and light. It's a place anyone would feel comfortable dining in, It is airy, bright, and could easily be a romantic cafe for a date or a casual spot to eat by yourself or with friends. You might be tempted to stay for hours. Of course the place was immaculate, as they only opened 4 days ago, they informed me. The space itself is so pretty, I'd order a beverage and eat there just to bask in the vibe of the place.
Clean Table's food is organic, vegetarian and ready to go. Everything is made fresh daily, and packed in eco conscious containers. The employees had only started to put salads out and assorted foods. Everything looked fresh, inviting. And did I mention that everything I saw was under $10? Chilled beet soup and gazpacho were both $4.95. Salads were mostly around $8.95. Wraps and other entrees off the "hot" menu the same. Add a draft latte and you can dine for under $15 and not worry about doing penance at the gym. This is healthy food they are serving here.
I normally don't have coffee drinks because my stomach generally can tolerate only decaffeinated coffee but the draft latte was so good I ordered one to go. I also tasted a berry hibiscus drink that was refreshing and again, not requiring any sugar. If the food there tastes as delicious as the drinks, this place will do well. Especially because the service was so friendly. If I worked in a place that pretty, serving health conscious food that was good for all animals, I'd be cheery too. The woman I met was a great spokesperson for this lovely place and deserves kudos.
Clean Table is worth a stop for the draft latte alone but offers much more. I plan to come back soon and try their salads and will update my review. They are so new I couldn't find their website and they didn't have printed menus yet to offer.
Thrilled to see a reasonably priced vegetarian take out/eat in restaurant open up in West Village! It's early days yet but this place shows huge promise already.
All meals seem to be pre-made but are clearly fresh, think Pret-a-manger but locally sourced and with a much larger variety. You have both cold and hot options, from soup to salad to wraps to tofu scramble with potatoes. The last of which I ate and was pleased with… Though the portion was on the smaller side so if you're starving you might need to load up a bit. However all prices are under $10 (!!!!) so I really can't complain. Also, a full coffee bar with reasonable priced la Colombe coffee. Like, what more do you want?
Great little space, converted from the once swanky Mas la Grillade with balcony and skylight intact.
Can't wait to see this place live up to its full potential!!! I'm ready Clean Table, be my dreamboat lunch spot!!!!
