My go to Chinese grocer when I'm at by Sugar Sweet Sunshine and too lazy to trek to Chinatown for groceries. Clinton is smaller, and has a somewhat grungy atmosphere to it no matter what day, time or season I shop there. But it's convenient to the F train stop when I need some fresh tofu or some Chinese sauces and for some reason, I like to go in just to watch the line at their takeout buffet side. I never had the courage to buy anything because I like my cooked food sold separately from my groceries items but the Clinton seems to do a brisk business with their 4 choice medley for $4. The fresh vegetables and fruits here don't seem to be as fresh as the ones in the main Chinatown area; my guess due to a slower turnover and I say buy the seafood at your own risk. I have seen people buy the fresh meats and haven't read any articles about corpses piling up due to rancid food from this place. I did notice other Yelpers did say they sold expired food. I always check the dates and have never and problem though I never buy in the quantities I do at say, a New York Mart or Hong Kong supermarket.
Have you been searching NYC, high and low, for pork intestinal bung? Me too. And I'm glad I finally found it at Clinton Supermarket (see photo).
In truth, this is one-stop shopping for all your odd animal product needs. They've got tripe, oxtail, whole pig's ears, black chickens and rabbits.
Not sure what to cook that tripe with? They have all sorts of Chinese sauces, spices, etc, and any kind of Asian noodle you might want; I was trying to make a certain recipe (not tripe), and they had all the ingredients I was looking for.
Also, if you would like to cook enormous amounts of food that will keep everyone from hooking up, they have a torso-sized jar of peeled garlic cloves for $10.
Best of all, the fish market is CHEAP. I bought a pound of tilapia fillets for $3.50.
Markets and local grocery stores in the area have decreased, but Clinton Supermarket is one of the few spots that is still surviving in an area of bars, restaurants and boutiques.
They have many popular grocery items, but mainly focused on Asian products. If you want fresh fish they have it here, but that's the only downside about the market smelling fishy. Meat is ordered to your liking and cut. There's a mini food station that sells lunch box specials. If you want to play some lotto or scratch offs in hopes of having more money to shop, this place is really a jack of all trades of shopping.
There are frequently crooks shoplifting at this store, but its great that they post pictures of them. If only they offered a reward for their capture, so I can have more money to shop.
