Oh coach house your early bird specials were always the draw on my back to school/parent nights, but they changed the menu. Less options and less food included… The food and service are great so I will go back, but it was a bummer to see how the menu changed. So many other options and for the most part everything I've eaten there has been good ol' dinner food 🙂
Also always get the strawberry cheesecake it is to die for!!!
What a fun diner! It's like the classic diners of old, and in fact it was founded in 1939, so it's truly authentic. It has a counter where you can sit and enjoy a milkshake, a salad bar with some interesting options, and so many things on the menu you could eat here for a year and probably never order the same thing twice.
There was no wait for a table for five at lunchtime on a Sunday. Our waitress was fast and kind (she called a few of us "babe" a few times!) and very helpful in describing the menu to us and offering tips.
The food was perfectly fine, pretty much what you'd expect from a greasy spoon such as this one. I had the Fresh Salmon Burger, which was a salmon patty on a whole wheat bun. It came with coleslaw that was much too sweet, and a pile of fries that were plump, warm and salty. My boyfriend had the Spicy Texas Shrimp Wrap, which he thought was all right but bland, not at all spicy as advertised. My sister and mother split a vegetable omelet, which they mostly enjoyed but thought was way overloaded with cheese. They also remarked that the butter on the toast tasted funny. My father ordered the tilapia sandwich and they were kind enough to grill it for him instead of breading it. He mostly enjoyed it, although he agreed that the coleslaw that came on it was too sweet.
It's nice that such a staple of the community has remained in the area for so long, and if you're looking for a place to get some simple diner food, try this place first.
I grew up on 9th street my whole life
I moved to Vegas 10 years ago.
Never had a bad exp until last night in 40 years of eating there
Man did this place go downhill Fast
I ate here a few months ago it was fine
The cheesecake had a old refrigerator taste
My potstickers were pasty.
I had the fried lasagna it's now dry.
I was in a party of 12
Sad I used to buy whole cheesecakes there all he time to bring to people's houses
I loved thier chicken Francese.
I hope it gets better again
New Jersey is a diner place for sure, and coach house is one of the good ones!!
I really enjoyed their disco fries and also had a pork roll egg and cheese which was very good!
The service was great and the place was very clean!
Coach House isn't the ideal Yelp candidate as its merits are most apparent to those who already know it well. To my readers in Morris County, Brooklyn and Australia, I don't suppose you need to visit Coach House, but if you're checking your phone while stuck in tunnel traffic on Route 3, this is a decent spot.
You might guess that the omelettes are safe and the lobster is pointless (I don't actually know if they have lobster.) Repeat visits will help you calibrate your Coach House preferences but first-timers must try the salad bar. You'll find Midwestern-looking mayo-type salads, grape leaves and chick-pea salad.
I got a grilled chicken special with an assertive marinade that likely had vinegar and I'm not sure what else. It was a tiny bit too salty, but the powerful flavor and the charring of the bird certainly provided more interest than typical diner poultry.
You can wear sweatpants here, or a tie. Everyone's welcome at Coach House, but this is a warmer and more festive environment than other 24/7 spots like Spa in Hoboken or the late, lamented Flamingo in Jersey City.
Food is delish…..BUT if you want to eat here I would suggest during the day and not late night when all the drunk ghetto trouble makers are out and about. Although I enjoy the food here very much…this place has gotten a reputation of letting unappropriate, unacceptable, and violent behavior occur. My friend and I have experienced it ourselves. I think they need to be a little more aware of what's going on with the customers that walk in there, specifically on a late weekend night. That aside my favorite appetizer to order is the hot wings with fries…I like adding cheese to my fries. So good, fresh and hot, and service is very quick. I like to place orders to go…and I recently found out they deliver to some surrounding towns in the hudson county area which is awesome.
My family has been going to Coach House for years! They have a large menu with a nice selection of daily specials and a decent salad bar.
Be warned that they have huge portions so be ready to take home leftovers. I've never been unhappy with my meals from here. For breakfast, I usually get a bacon and egg or Taylor ham and egg sandwich, and I'll substitute the fries for something else like sweet potato wedges. Sometimes I'll get pancakes or a waffle, which is always a solid choice. (They have multigrain pancakes at no additional charge!) They also serve really decadent cheesecake pancakes! I'll usually split this with 3-4 other people. We'll ask for multigrain with chocolate chips, fresh strawberries and whipped cream. The omelets are a solid selection as well. They're not skimpy with meat and veggies! As for the breakfast paninis, they can be slightly overdone so feel free to tell the server that you don't want the bread too dark. Breakfast items are available all day.
For lunch or dinner, I've ordered a bunch of different entrees from their turkey BLT to the crusty Parmesan chicken to their Cali burger. Honestly, it was all pretty good, which not many places can accomplish. Usually, most diners have their forte and stick to it. With a menu as broad as Coach House', you would think that they were setting themselves up for failure. I'm glad to say that's not the case. I've even heard people say that they like their Chinese dishes and their empanadas! Their daily specials are excellent deals because they include the salad bar as well. It's totally possible that you'll have to wrap up your entree after digging into the salad bar.
The salad bar in my opinion is okay. I just wish it had a few more protein choices like grilled chicken, canned tuna, or sliced hard-boiled eggs. They typically have a few fresh veggie items, but a lot of them come from the can. They also have a bunch of different salads – potato salad, pasta salad, bean salad, carrot and raisin salad, etc. Most of these salads are not very healthy, but they are tasty. They even offer free banana bread too!
For dessert, I'm all about the cheesecake! They have an excellent cheesecake that rivals Juniors in my opinion. They also serve some good chocolate chip cookies which can be found pre-wrapped next to the register. Perfect for when you want a little something but don't have time.
Coach House is open 24/7 and offers friendly, efficient service. They also have a decent amount of parking surrounding the restaurant and just across the street. I've never had any major problems there. Although one quirk that bugs me that you might want to take not of – they always round their checks up to the closest nickel to avoid pennies!
I thought this was the perfect place for a family night out.
Yes, they have parking in Jersey City. Hooray!
Yes, they have HUGE plates – salads and burgers, more than enough to share and take home extra!
Yes, they have a large diner menu of pasta, burgers, salads, wraps, & entrees.
Yes, they are casual inside with sports on tv to watch.
They are comfy, the staff are super friendly, and while some items are pricey the size of the plates and salad bar are worth it. I'll be back here again & again!
