Something about this area of Manhattan seems to draw the entire continent of Australia. With Ruby's, Two Hands, and now Coco & Cru (not to mention countless others) nearby, Nolita + NoHo is Little Australia.
Coco & Cru is the type of place that makes you feel good from the second you step inside. The feel of a summer breeze flowing through open floor-to-ceiling windows. Whitewashed brick interior. The smell of freshly emulsified green juice. It awakens all the senses and makes you appreciate living.
Their menu has plenty of fun items with Balthazar pastries and giant burgers, but you can also health up your hotcakes with buckwheat or dive into an entire section dedicated to plant rich toasts and bowls. I settled on the green bowl with broccoli, steamed spinach, kale pesto, and ancient grains. Added grilled chicken and egg as recommended by our server, and it was fantastic. I love a bacon, egg, and cheese on a roll as much as the next guy, but it feels a lot better starting off a Sunday this way. I also had the avocado toast, despite strong initial reservations. It's hard to pay for something that I can make at home for little money and effort, and avocado toast might be hitting mass over saturation in lower Manhattan. But Coco & Cru had enough going on with their version that made me glad to order it. Smoked Mozzarella, avocado, pumpkin seeds, cherry tomatoes, and a bushel of spring mix sits atop a long slab of toasted sourdough. This thing is massive and can act as your entire order. It looks like an open face sandwich more than toast, and you shouldn't write it off like I almost did.
All that wholesome food is great, but let's be real; it's all about their boozy green juices. The pressed juice gods probably didn't intend to have bottle of vitamin-rich vegetables spiked with 40-proof liquor, but mezcal is a plant too. You can spike several of their fresh pressed juices with mezcal, pisco, and cachaca, and it blows the socks off of your typical Sunday mimosa. If nothing else, pop by Coco & Cru to appease your sorority of Lululemon-wearing health hipsters, but be sure to toss back some moonshine like the rebel you are.
All in all, a fantastic addition to the lower Manhattan brunch and lunch scene, and right on trend with bubbling demand for fun, but healthy styles of eating.
Surprised that I hadn't noticed this spot on my way to school every day. I came here for brunch with my friends and we all ended up getting the salmon toast. It came with a side salad; nothing too special but still really savory, especially with the spice on top of the egg. We also ordered home fries, which were pretty good. The only downside is that the portions are not big enough to be filling, but they're perfect for a light meal before Sunday activities.
There are many drink selections, but I opted for the cortado coffee–my first time having it. I'm not a coffee lover so it tasted really bitter although I added a whole pack of sugar.
Would probably come back next time to try other things on the menu.
My Via serendipitous-ly took me right past coco & cru, just in time for me to yelp/bookmark it so I could come back. Which is exactly what I did 2 hours later for lunch. This is such a cute and perfect place to enjoy breakfast or lunch on a warm sunny day. They open up the windows, which are lined with bar height tables so you can sit, eat, and watch everything happening outside. I came alone, ordered some tea and the salmon toast (AMAZING), asked for the wifi password, and proceeded to stay there for the next 2.5 hours working. The service is really good, the food is tasty, and the wifi connection is strong. Highly recommend. I will definitely be back 🙂
