Anybody that doesn't love this brisket must think that chilis has legit ribs. This is some of the best brisket we have ever eaten. Slow and low with a mild smoke flavor. 9 dollars for a sandwich is not a lot of you know the care and dedication it takes (10-12+ hours) to make a good brisket.
I should have learned (from Empanada Guy, Pat's, Geno's, Azucar, Quaker Steak) that shameless self promotion does not mean good food. I came walking up to Pier 13 expecting to pick up two shrimp po boy's from a different truck …. but what's this?!?!? A shiny new truck!!!! With a speaker system and a T.V(red flag #1)….fancy!!! It's Memorial Day and they have BBQ (wait Brooklyn BBQ?!?!? What the hell is Brooklyn BBQ?!?!? [another red flag]) So passing by to see what other trucks are there we soon realize we've tried everything else so we can do two things:
#1: Order two po boys (as planned) and leave happy or…. #2: Order one po boy and try something from the shiny new fancy truck.
We choose option 2.
As I stood in line I quickly found out the tv and sound system wasn't to entertain hungry patrons as they wait in line…but to shamelessly plug two tv experiences they've had. Played on a loop over and over again.
CNGI has four real option (at least today they did) pulled Pork sandwich, brisket sandwich, or loose pork or brisket by the 1/2 or whole pound. We choose a brisket sandwich (and decide to go 1/2's with the brisket and the po boy). Best of both world's right?!?!
I place my order and the sandwich is made quickly but I'm still waiting…. apparently the long line had nothing to do with the food but the owner fumbling with the register and square.
Moment of truth….The brisket was dry and (while the sauce that was on it was good) lacked a sufficient amount of sauce (not that the sauce would have saved the dry brisket). Also, from a bun to meat ratio this was all wrong with a large airy roll and very little meat (for $9). The sandwich could have also benefited from a slaw or pickles (or both….neither were a option).
We also ordered the bacon chocolate chip cookies ($4 for three cookies). The cookies were tasty (although i prefer a softer less crumbly cookie) but the bacon to cookie ratio varied in the cookies. My cookie had very little bacon while my girlfriend was torn if she liked her's because "it was too bacony" (if bacony is a word). We split the last cookie and her half was a lot like my first cookie and vise versa . End result: good, not great….needs consistency.
I love BBQ…..so I was really hoping this was good….sadly, it wasn't!
(Looking at the pics they posted I realized they raised prices $1 for sandwiches, bread pudding, and cookies. $2 for 1/2 and whole pounds of meat while in Hoboken today…..even less of a value….)
Came across this truck at the Rock Carnival this weekend. I will say that while it needed A LOT more meat on the pulled pork sandwich that we ordered (especially for a hefty $9), it was REALLY tasty. I mean really. My 3 year old daughter couldn't get enough and she's a really picky eater.
