As soon as I walked in and saw the real wood burning oven on the wall, I was sold. Even though it was really a projector on the wall.
They encourage you to order family style, so make sure to come with relatives otherwise that's not allowed. We got four pies to share: the meatball, a sausage one that no I won't try to spell, the mushroom one, and a seasonal special (prosciutto and peaches). In order, they went sausage, mushroom, meatball, P&P, but the range was 9 to 7 – all really good! The pizzas are each personal pies and are pretty pricey as a result, but they're all delicious. The meatball pie is basically a cheese pie with one meatball on each slice.
If you ask, they'll cut each pie into 6 slices instead of the usual 4!
I really enjoyed this place.
Came here with a group of friends on a Saturday for lunch. We showed up around 12:30pm and there was no wait. We split the Pizza Bianca (with ricotta on the side) as an appetizer and it was tasty! It was pretty much dough-y bread with olive oil and salt. That's not to say it wasn't good – I really liked it.
We split three pies: the mushroom and jalapeno, the cauliflower, and the Florentine (from the brunch menu). The mushroom and jalapeno was my favorite but all choices were pretty darn tasty and unique.
For dessert my husband and I split the toffee cake with ice cream and our friends split the banoffee. The toffee cake was excellent and I think they enjoyed the banoffee because disappeared pretty quickly.
Great food, great service, excellent place.
First and foremost, very helpful and accommodating staff, especially given that one of our large group had limited mobility – many thanks for arranging suitable seating.
The place was bustling, even on a Sunday evening which looked encouraging.
When ordering drinks, we were advised by the waiter to choose the flagons of ale to share as it would work out a bit cheaper than us all buying separate drinks. The beers were very good.
For my meal I ordered their Meatball pie/pizza which came with tomato, mozzarella, veal meatballs, caramelised onions, olives, pecorino and oregano. It was alright, but not amazing.
Dessert for me was Coconut Layer Cake – again it was fine, a hearty portion but nothing to make you crave another serving.
I've been meaning to try Co. for a while now, ever since one of my friends went and raved about it. I finally got a chance to go last Friday and I also had a very pleasant dinner.
They don't take reservations, and we went on a Friday night, so obviously there would be a wait. As a head's up, there aren't a lot of bars in the immediate area, so you'll have to walk a couple of blocks. We found a spot to stand in the corner of their very small bar, near the window, and ordered a bottle of Malbec. The good thing about this place is that you can transfer your bar tab to your dinner tab (some places don't allow you to do that).
My two friends and I waited about 30min until we were seated, but the hostess did keep us updated on when we'd be able to get a table. Our waitress was very nice and had some good recommendations for us.
For appetizer, we were eyeing the Pizza Bianca and the Fire-Roasted Eggplant toast, but our waitress said one of the specials was this butternut squash toast, so we opted for that instead of the fire-roasted eggplant. The outcome:
Pizza Bianca – it was interesting because it was essentially just pizza dough (actually, to me, it looked and tasted more like Indian naan), baked flat with some oil on top. On the side, there was a bowl of ricotta cheese that you could spread on top of the pizza. The combination was delicious, but a bit dry. I wish it had more flavor to it, and the ricotta was a bit heavy. Overall, still pretty good.
Butternut Squash Toast – this was very good! There was a mixture of many things on it and it was pretty small (think a regular slice of bread, except a bit longer) and since we cut it in three, there were only a few bits for each of us, but I do remember it being tasty!
The pizza here isn't thin crust, but it's not a deep dish either – probably equate it to a hand-tossed style of pizza. They only have one size and it's a small-medium size style. To give you an idea, the three of us got the two appetizers, two pies, two desserts, and two bottles of wine, and we were perfectly full at the end. Regarding the pizza, we got:
Mushroom & Jalapeno – this was really good. I wish they put more jalapenos in it, but I'm glad it wasn't too "mushroomy" (if you know what I mean) and you could taste all the different cheeses.
Stracciatella – definitely a simpler and less filling pizza than the other, but still very good. If you're an arugula fan, then you will definitely like this pizza.
We had room for some dessert and decided to get the Bomboloni & Affogato, which is a donut with vanilla ice cream (very good when you mix both together) and the chocolate chunk ice cream. Overall, I was pleased with the meal and service and glad I finally got a chance to check this place out.
A must visit joint in NYC for a good Napoletana slice. Ordered their popular pies – mushroom and Popeye. Would definitely recommend these for folks who prefer a non red base. Full marks to the crust and ingredients. The mushroom pizza was incredible even for me as non mushroom enthusiast, must have for shroomheads. The popeye though great pales in comaprison, however is a lot of fresh and lightly cooked spinach.
Loved the communal seating and ambiance. My big complaint here is the wine selection. Their reds are a shame given their appeal overall and prices. Better improve their wines or face the wrath of the Highline NYC peeps visiting this joint !
If you like thin crust pizza and you're nearby then it's worth the stop. The staff is amazingly nice. The cost is too high, at $17 per 4 slice pizza, even for New York. I think 4 people should order 3 pizzas based on size. The pizza was very good, but I think there's room for more adventure in flavor. Overall, I liked the casual atmosphere and the staff.
My buddy wanted to grab a quick bite after work midweek not too long ago, so he suggested Co – nice of him, as that's only a few blocks away, but a place I've run by plenty of times on my way to run along the West Side Highway (but had never really looked at). Very casual homey feel to the inside, with a bar and tables around the edges and a large communal table (where we were seated) in the middle. Service was alright, if a bit inattentive, but we got our food relatively quickly, which was mainly what I cared about. The wine list looks pretty solid, but for beers, you only had a few craft choices that were appealing.
We started out with the veal meatballs, which were really well-cooked – very juicy, not dry at all, and bathed in a delicious tomato-based sauce. Definitely a worthy starter, and a decent price considering that TMS is my measuring stick for affordably delicious balls. I decided to go with the stracciatella pizza, which I had mixed feelings about. On one hand, I absolutely loved the cheese; it was so fresh and creamy, almost like eating slices of burrata on a pizza. I really liked the fresh ground pepper on the pizza as well, giving it a nice little peppery kick. However, it wasn't as prevalent as I wanted, and I did feel like the amount of arugula showered on top was a bit excessive. However, the main issue was that if you bit into the cheese, you got a much bigger chunk / bite than you were probably anticipating. The resultant feeling was that I felt like I gulped my pizza down much faster than I would have liked, and I wasn't able to appreciate the flavors as much as I would have wanted.
While the flavors here were great, I feel like my pizza needed a bit better execution before I'd give Co another star. However, it's certainly a place I'd enjoy coming back to again, given that it's not far away and is a very solid pizza joint with reasonable prices. Definitely worth a shot, especially when they open the windows and let a cool late spring / summer breeze blow in!
I came here for lunch on Saturday. We ordered the radicchio salad and the Quattro (I think) pizza – it had scallions, fried shallots, caramelized onions, gruyere and some other delicious shit -soooooo good and sooo onion-y. YUM. I also had a pomanero to drink. My only complaint is that it's expensive but that's expected for the area. The salad was also a little on the small side. However, overall it was very good – service was great, too.
