I've been going to Cones for years now– I'll always be a loyal Cones gal! I started going here long before I was even on Yelp, which is why I've never even got around to writing a review.
Cones seriously never seizes to amaze me. Every flavor they produce tastes EXACTLY like what it is supposed to be. Even after visiting a billion times, I can't even understand how they manage do it.
I usually choose to have chunky ice cream over creamy gelato; however, I love Cones so much that I'd basically pick it over ice cream any day.
My only warning is that certain flavors are so strong that you actually have to be careful. I usually love mint chocolate ice cream, but I find the mint flavor way too strong at Cones. But I love majority of their flavors! Oddly enough, the corn is one of my top favorites. And if you're a Dulce de Leche fan, you'll go crazy for this place.
It's a tad bit pricey, but so worth it. You definitely have to stop in if you're in the area!
Location: Cones is immersed among millions of bleecker street independent shops. And it does not stand out if you look for it. The store is less fancier compared to other renovated stores and I would call it sketchy somehow. There are fewer spots to sit inside and I doubt any outdoor seatings as well.
Ice Cream: There are many choices of flavors, and most are common flavors, except I had mate, which is brazilian green tea, and corns. Well, I would say, the flavor is really distinctive from what I had ever imaged. It is hard for me to describe, since sometimes after few bites, I felt the flavor is too strong but later I felt like it is not preserved in my mouth. Maybe it is exactly what you need but to me, I wished something preserved long to satisify my tommy.
Price: one flavor cup for 4.36. HMMM..
Overall: compared to other ice cream store, especially right after trying earl grey tea from Van's artisan ice cream shop, I am not impressed by Cone's performance.
3.5 stars
Got the almond cream, which was delicious. It was sweet without being overpowering, and the ice cream was so rich and smooth.
The lactose-intolerant can now rejoice! There're many sorbet options, and they actually taste creamy! I got the raspberry and chocolate sorbets upon the owner's recommendation. The raspberry tastes fresh and fruity, reminiscent of my favorite strawberry sorbets from France. The chocolate is impeccably churned, and doesn't carry any hint of the powdery cocoa texture I often find in non-dairy chocolate desserts.
Look forward to trying their 8-10 other sorbet flavors!
I think I was about 15 or 16 the first time I went to Cones. When I was recounting this to my friend on our recent visit I realized this means I've been going there for about half my life. Few places have lasted in this city so well, and far less places have lasted in my life. Let's just say I'm easily distracted and bored, by everything…including food. Yet Cones has stood the test of time. My friend was back in town recently and we were desperate for ice cream but not one that was so filling it would ruin our tradition of long meandering walks around the city. THat's when I suggested Cones only to discover she had never been in all her years living here. That settled it. Everyone has to visit Cones at least once in their life. In reality it should be much more than once, since their flavors change all the time and you just gotta try all the clever new ones. Right now there is a corn flavor. Say what now? CORN! The banana ice cream was perfection. I mean that. Perfect. It was smooth, not too sweet, superbly flavorful as both banana and ice cream if you know what I mean. Each bite left you feeling like you were eating both of your favorite treats equally as opposed to one or the other. The chocolate is a main stay that I adore, even if it makes me a simple person. The sorbets are some of my favorite anywhere – be it in New York or elsewhere – I don't think I've had a better sorbet. I prefer that sorbet to the gelato down the street. And to top it all off, it's super friendly and always true to number one mission: good ice cream, good people, good times.
Cones has a lot of flavors of sorbets and ice creams. You should have absolutely no trouble finding a flavor which peaks your interest. We opted for watermelon sorbet and dolce de leche ice cream. The sorbet had a good consistency and texture but the flavor was off. I enjoyed the dolce de leche which had a bold caramel flavor along with chunks of chocolate throughout. The ice cream had a rich and creamy consistency.
I would rate Cones three and a half stars.
Very very friendly owners. Greets you with a broad smile and offers to try their various gelatos. Small shop, so gotta get your cone/cup and get the hell on out.
Only tried a few of their selections. Their savory flavors easily outshine the sorbets imo. The sorbets are a bit too bland and watery. Needs a bit more body. The savory ones are really well made though. Consistent creaminess throughout the scoop. Sweet and with just the right amount of heaviness to each spoonful or bite.
Bottom line, come here if you crave a meal like gelato, else where for something fruitier.
Cones is very underrated — hiding in the shadows of more known ice cream places in the city, but still very much unique. It's much cheaper than other ice cream places; a small scoop is $5 (after tax) and consists of 2 flavors/scoops.
Corn Ice Cream: The corn flavor is light and I noticed pieces of kernels in the ice cream. It's not overly sweet, so I enjoyed it a lot. When you ask for a sample, the worker asks if you would like to try it with cinnamon powder. DO IT! It makes a big difference, in a good way.
Coffee Chip: A solid choice — the coffee taste is strong but not overly powering.
I also sampled the dulce de leche, which I found wayyyyy too sweet (it wouldn't have been a good combo with the corn ice cream, def needed a more bitter/unsweet flavor to balance it out).
According to the sign on the door, everything is made daily on-site, which is pretty cool. Plus, they have A LOT of flavors for a place that churns out flavors on the daily. There are an assortment of sorbets and ice creams to choose from. The unique flavors aren't only limited to the ice creams, I saw lychee sorbet — I didn't try it since I was distracted by the corn, but sounds super yummy!
