Connolly’s
“The interior decoration at this place looks so weird, especially what they hang on the wall…made me miss MoMA a little bit.”
“I may be a little biased, because we ducked into Connolly's in the middle of a COLD Manhattan afternoon as we were walking back to the Warwick Hotel.”
“Nice and cool in the basement bar.”

Door guy was nice, and that's where the satisfaction ends. Long and hot, the atmosphere is hectic. I said a fervent prayer while I was there that pubs in the UK would not be like this (thankfully they weren't). I squeezed into a space, found out it was reserved, ended up standing behind a post next to the bar, got a pint from the unfriendly bartender, drank it in bewilderment, and jetted as fast as my legs could carry me. It's probably fun with a group of drunk friends, maybe even for dinner, but not a place you can just stop into and hang out by yourself or with one other. Too crazy for that.
Will be back to this nice restaurant with a menu that includes traditional Irish foods and fish and pasta at reasonable prices. Irish beers. Wait staff is attentive. Table seating is upstairs. Booths are in the downstairs bar area. Came before a Broadway Show.
I was walking around NY around 1AM looking for a local bar to get a few drinks. After walking a few blocks unsuccessfully I looked up bars in the area online and came across Connolly's. Their website says they are open until 4 AM so I thought it would be perfect. I walk in around 1:30 and see a few people inside the bar but am immediately yelled at from across the room "WE'RE CLOSED!!" however, there were still patrons inside the bar drinking. Not sure why their website says 4AM and not sure why the bartender told me they were closed when there were clearly patrons still inside. Maybe they should update their website so people don't go out of their way to come here thinking they're open…or get a "CLOSED" sign for the door. I will avoid this place next time it comes up online.
Very good food and nice atmosphere… Reasonably priced. The special burger on the menu (I am blanking on the name) was delicious!!! It has cheese, caramelized onions, and Irish bacon…. Sooo yummy.
Service was pretty good… Nothing special but all the basics. Very good food.
Pretty much the only good thing about this pub is that it's across from the MoMA. That was enough to draw me in after a museum day for a beer and a burger. Although I never actually got either of those, so I can't speak to the quality of the food.
First of all, I checked prices on Yelp because I figured that a midtown bar could be fairly pricey. But it seemed to all check out. Except for the fact that once I got into the restaurant, everything was at least 5 bucks more than what it says on Yelp. Expect to pay AT LEAST $15 for a burger, even though it says around $10 online.
So okay, food wasn't working out, but I figured we could at least get some beer and fries before we totally wrote this place off. The waitress came up to us and asked us for drink orders, so I asked for a beer list. Not only did she tell me that she couldn't give us a list (she kind of vaguely waved at the bar and said "look at the wall."), but she wouldn't tell us a single beer that they had on tap.
I'm sorry, when I go somewhere that advertises itself as an "Irish pub," I expect some kind of ability to at least serve me alcohol. Or if you really can't figure it out, at least be polite about it.
Completely average. Definitely come here if you need a place to chill with your bros while drinking some buurs and watching sports, while eating crappy bar food that tries to be a bit fancier by offering sweet potato fries (which, yes, they are fantastic but how can you screw those up. The sandwiches and chicken wings though, don't expect much).
Good food and decent service.
I was impressed with the food quality and portions at Connolly's. And while my main entree was good — I actually enjoyed the appetizer menu items more.
Service was OK.
If you need a break form the MoMA, go here. Just beware that it's basically in a basement, very narrow, not good for large parties and very dark. The Guinness is pretty good but served in 16 oz pint glasses (I think all the Connolly's have this issue). The food is decent. The weekday bartender had his regulars lined up at the bar during lunchtime and, since I was by myself, I did manage to have some interesting conversations with the office workers escaping work for a cocktail. The guy next to me had 2 vodka martinis with his meal. I imagine his work life isn't too pleasant. Or maybe I'm the only one who thinks two drinks at lunchtime means it's time for a nap, not more work?
At any rate, this bar does the job just fine. Go in without great expectations and it will satisfy. It does provide some nice down-to-earth respite from the shopping machine that is 5th Avenue.
