  1. Two stars- I would have given it one but I feel sorry for the waiter who was either not suited for the job or just over whelmed- but his heart was in the right place and I did not get food poisoning. I am saving the absolute lowest rating for that.
6:40- check in party of 7
7:00- seated at a table for 6. We ask if we can add a chair and they say no. Because we have to be out by 8:00 we split up and 2 of us go to another table
7:10- my table of 5 gets our order taken – many apologies from the waiter for the wait.
7:25- told they are out of fish and chips. I ask what is "quick" am told salad or soup. Order a soup. Again many apologies.
7:30- we still don't have drinks or even water. I see the waiter helping the bus boy clear a table and I ask him about our drinks. He says they are pouring them right now. I say " then go hang out at the bar"
7:45- our drinks come (our friends in another section are eating now)
7:50 waiter with more apologies "I wish I could cook the food myself for you"
7:55- the kids (did I mention the hungry kids?) tell me to keep track of the time it is taking so that I can document it in my Yelp review. When I "check in" I see that We get a free wine with one dinner.
8:00- we are now late for our event, our friends have already left and we are wondering if we should just leave but the food arrives. Sad little salads and a very mediocre cup of chili equal to a chain restaurant.
8:05 flag down the waiter and ask for the check. I show him the coupon from Yelp.
8:07 he comes back and says the manager won't honor it because it is "too hectic"
8:10 I go to the manager myself because I find this hard to believe and she actually tells me that she is too busy to honor the coupon. I tell her that I waited an hour for my food and the least she could do was honor the coupon and she shrugged and went to do something else.
8:15 paid my bill. And hoped I didn't get food poisoning.

  2. Reliable mediocrity is the name of the game at COOGAN's. It's not great food — and sometimes it's just bad, period — but it's a 1-minute walk from CUMC, and that's why it's managed to stay in business. Pluses: a large menu, terrific deserts, friendly service, and good sides/appetizers. Burgers are unfortunately a hit or miss. If you like buns that are overtoasted and taste like cardboard, you have a 50/50 chance of getting your wish granted with each order.

I'm going to continue coming here, but I hope they don't keep taking the "captive diner" business base for granted, especially with other places finally starting to open up in the area.

  3. Good place but nothing special. Coogan's has good drink specials and if you check in on Yelp you get a free glass of wine! The food is good but nothing to rave about. Service can be a tad slow sometimes, too. Definitely a good option for CUMC students to celebrate finishing an exam with some beers and bar food.

  4. Stopped here on a Saturday afternoon for brunch it wasn't very busy and we sat the bar. I was going to get some breakfast food but didn't want anything crazy heavy and I just couldn't decide. So I was going to get the roast beef sandwich but I didn't want the mayo and she said it was pre made which I thought was a little odd. Shop I settled for a salmon salad which was decent. I had two mimosas which were good she didn't go crazy with the OJ so that was perfect. All in all nothing bad to say. Everything was just OK.

  5. I haven't had the brunch there yet that everyone seems to be raving about but it's plenty decent for happy hour on a weekday on the way home. There's an element going on in here that I wouldn't necessarily call charm but there is something inviting about the place. It reminds of an old earthquake-stricken bar in Anchorage that I've once been to and considering this is Manhattan, that's a pretty impressive feat. Very attentive bar staff, rather mediocre dinner but I was only eating to get by anyway so no harm done.

  6. Been in twice this week for lunch after working at Columbia-Presbyterian.   It's a nice little spot with super fresh salads.  Both the Jamaican jerk salad with mango salsa and the arugula with goat cheese and strawberries are tasty and just the right portion size.  Service is a bit slow so do allow time for that.  Great iced tea too!

  7. Coogan's has been a fixture in Washington Heights since 1985, a time when this area was a LONG way from being as gentrified as it has become now.  30 years later it's a neighborhood gem where all kinds of folks with diverse backgrounds come together for a laid back atmosphere and good Irish pub grub and spirits. Terrific friendly staff and the owners are characters in their own right and fierce supporters of the neighborhood. Typical pub fare. Decor is old school Irish pub with beer plaques and neon signage, tons of TVs for watching sports, they even do karaoke night. What more could you want in a good old neighborhood pub?

  8. Food is pretty good but I love the atmosphere the most I think. Waiter service is wonderful the owner is very nice. I love their appetizer sampler because it's great with a group of people!
