  1. Went here with a friend around 8:30pm on a week night and was lucky enough to grab a seat out on the patio. The rest of the restaurant was packed–inside and out. This liveliness made for a great dinner vibe.

To start off, we decided to split an order of the caesar salad. Though the salad was not the biggest appetizer, it had good flavor and was dressed well.

For my main entree, I decided to go with the scallops. They were the smaller type of scallop and there were probably about 8 on the plate, which was a good amount. It also came with a great puree and mix of veggies, that complimented them quite well.

Also, during the night I had a watermelon mojito (which was meh) and a spicy margarita (which was excellent–it's not on the menu, but it should be.

Overall, the service here was friendly and the food was high quality and came out quickly. Like I mentioned before, the atmosphere here really can't be beat, though the lighting is limited outside once the sun goes down. Nevertheless, dining on the patio makes for great people watching. This place definitely knows what they are doing and does it well–try to make a reservation or you might have a hard time getting into this place at peak times.

  2. I came here under a reserved party of 8 (coworkers) for 12:30 on a Tuesday–normal NYC lunchtime. The place wasn't crazy packed, but it definitely seemed like a well run place as the wait staff felt trained. This place seemed like a very classic nicer breakfast and brunch place, very current and modern, not too hipster.

For water, you can choose between sparking and regular water, which I thought was a nice touch. They also offer alcohol drinks, so I would imagine this place to be a popular boozy brunch spot on weekends. The menu is pretty simple, maybe 6 appetizers, 3 sandwiches, 3 salads, and 6 or so "entrees" (more like an other category, with things like tacos, burgers, cod, etc.). We ordered a bunch of oysters to start, which people seemed to enjoy (I'm allergic myself). However, the wait between the appetizers and entrees was egregiously long. Normally I would chalk this up to the NYC lunch rush, but I was clearly observing other tables get their food a lot earlier than ours. After almost an hour of waiting, we had to flag down a waitress to inquire about when our food was coming out, having to wait another 5-10 minutes after that.

I ordered the Cookshop Breakfast Bowl, which is basically a spinach, kale, a huge assortment of nuts, and falafel with an egg on top. The egg seemed to be cooked over medium but was left out for a little long, as the top of the yolk has solidified and gone a little cold. In short, the egg wasn't the best–I was hoping to be able to mix things a bit together more, but this was more like, I had to cut the egg with a knife into pieces to add to bites… not a fan. The nut mix was good, but I felt like the kale really overpowered the flavors. I don't remember if there was dressing listed, but it felt to me like the was some kind of dressing–tasted like kale on the acidic side to me? Also, a minor detail, but I was really surprised by the plating… while all of the other dishes at my table were put on normal white places, my salad was in a dark indigo bowl, which had me scratching my head because it literally made it more difficult to see my food (or take a picture of it). From a presentation standpoint, this was just puzzling to me. The falafel (got 2 little balls) was pretty decent, but there wasn't really enough to go around. I ended up not finishing the dish–partially because it was a lot, but largely because I just didn't feel a strong urge to keep going due to the taste.

This might have just been an unlucky experience, but from the food I got this time and the wait we had to endure, I have to bring this restaurant down to 2 stars. I can see how this place gets its 4-star average on Yelp, but that's not what I got this time. Granted, the food that everyone else got seemed to be good, and they all seemed to enjoy it. Some of the portions were ridiculously small (the tacos, which were closer to $20, were not very big, and I bet you could get them for less than half the price at any real taco place and get something even better). But they seemed to do a good job with the sandwich/burger. The fried chicken in particular looked great–they use a huge piece of cutlet, which was interesting since it looked influenced by NY delis more so than (Southern) fried chicken. Definitely different, so I'm eyeing that dish for the future.

I do plan on coming back, so there'll probably be an updated review then!

  3. Beautiful little brunch place, with awesome staff and fresh food.

They do require that all patrons are there before seating. Limited menu, but lots of options for gluten free. I decided on the frittata, as it was already naturally gluten free, and a Bees Knees drink. Everything was light, yet filling. The wait took a while for both drink and food, but thankfully I had good company and a strong drink.

  4. Ok – Ok… Forget my last dinner review for CookShop!  I know what I said but I'm taking it all back! What was I thinking? Smh

Turns out, not ONLY do I love lunching at CookShop but I Major LOVE their dinner menu too! (My last experience wasn't great… Cuz I just didn't pick the right meal!).

This time around, I found what my taste buds craved… The crazy stupid good Berkshire Pork Chop! It's one giant thick pork chop seared to perfection with these insanely double fried potatoes (watch out! So damn good, you will need to hit the gym after!).  My mouth couldn't stop tingling from the savory juicy pork chop mangled together with the crispy potatoes.  My girlfriend had the American Waygu Sirloin steak, that was pretty darn good as well.  Yes, I did happen to steal… I mean… "Sample" a piece of the steak. (No judgy eyes here! You know very well you would've done the same. Ha Ha)

Oh goodness – I forgot our amazing devil eggs! They change up the toppings on these babies.  Last night was: roe/pickles/bacon/olives…

I love that they have mocktails! My watermelon mint cooler was freaking awesome! Refreshing and tasty.

But our night truly hit the high note during dessert… Seriously, just epic… Can't even deal.  See the picture, go get it!

I also would like to thank the wonderful hostess for holding our table! Girlfriend was stuck in a cab across town during rush hour.  I was literally melting down with anxiety — until she gave me the warmest smile letting me know, everything will be OK!

(This place gets really pack… Do the smart thing, make a reservation!)

    Happy feasting!

  5. JVA AI Non-Salad Options – 5/5
    AI Accommodation – 4/5

Most of the standard dinner menu is AI friendly.  I ordered the beef skewers and snow peas salad.  Both were delicious.  My friend ordered the lettuce salad and rice.  She enjoyed both.

We asked them many, many questions about the menu and they were all very patient in providing information on ingredients.

They bring rolls to the table with butter.  As delicious as it looked, neither one of us could try them because we are both GF.

For dessert, they had 3 different sorbets (GF and DF).  So easy enough for AI to satisfy a sweetooth, but that was the only AI-option on the standard dessert menu.

  6. Cookshop is a cafe, restaurant, bar that boasts a consistenly high standard quality of food.  A perfectly safe choice when having to choose either a breakfast or brunch spot in this popular hood.

The burrata and pesto, with thick toasted bread, was a perfect start. It was both flavoursome and looked pretty on the plate.

I am always amazed by the variety of Casaer Salads available in NYC. At Cookshop, the dressing was slightly infused with lemon and this really made the crunchy croutons pop with flavour.

I seem to have ended upon on a bit of a burger pilgrimage on this last NYC trip and Cookshop's version far from disappointed.  A think, juicy medium rare patty, melted cheese, the crispiest of bacon and pickled onion made it a fullsome and tasty choice.

The beverage list is accommodating too, from coffee, cocktails to a pleasingly broad wine selection.  Our kind and attentive waiter suggested the perfect Rose to accompany what was a perfect Summer's day lunch.

  7. Came here around 12:45PM and was hoping there was still brunch, but unfortunately it was over already. Service was great, but I realized tables were getting bread and our server never gave us any. We didn't realize it until towards the middle of our meal, so we just shrugged it off.

What I had was the Devil Eggs Sampler which was pretty good! As for my entree I tried the Breakfast Bowl. It was pretty good and flavorful. I also had a strawberry mocktail and it was just ok.

Honestly nothing too memorable. Maybe I'll come back and try the brunch, but as for now I would only come back if I am around the area.

  8. Attended Cookshop around 2 pm on a Saturday for brunch. The wait was approximately 35 minutes so we ended up walking around until they texted us notifying us that our table was ready. I ordered the watermelon mojito as my cocktail and I must say not only was it delicious, it was also hella strong! For our entree, both my friend and I ordered the huevos rancheros with a side of bacon and a biscuit (sides were to split.) The huevos rancheros was DELICIOUS! Probably the best I've ever had. I was definitely part of the clean plate club with this dish. The biscuit was also top notch…the jelly? AH-MAZING! The bacon…was….not good at all. It was overcooked, burnt and extra, extra, extra CRISPY. I love me some bacon and I wasn't even able to eat it. No bueno. Aside from the bacon, the seating is crazy close. I get it, they want to fit as many people in this bad boy as possible. You kind of feel like you're on top of each other. The service was great! Our bill came up to $80…so it was a little pricey for brunch. I'm definitely going to return! The next time I'll request a booth and better bacon.
