This is still the best Mexican in town. Lunch is as good as dinner. Save room for deserts. The house specialty the Husk Meringue corn mousse is terrific, as are the cocktails.
I am personally not a huge fan of Mexican food and never thought Mexican can actually be high end but I was taken back when I arrived at Cosme. The hosts were all very inviting and friendly. After being seated I browsed the menu and decided to go with 3 dishes, 1 of each size and save room for dessert as I am huge on sweets. My friend and I ordered the softshell crab, Scallop and Octopus salad, and the Duck Carnitas.
The softshell crab were fried perfectly and sat in a tart Asian sauce and slices of daikon that went pretty well with the sauce. My main takeaway was the Scallop and Octopus salad. I cannot get over how phenomenal it was. The salad tasted exactly how Summer should taste like – fresh, exciting, different, and refreshing. The scallop and octopus were cooked right, not chewy at all and easy to bite into. Sitting on a bed of zucchinis and squid ink sauce, the flavors balanced each other greatly. By far one the best salads I have ever encountered.
Now onto the Duck Carnitas. First off, the dish was huge and can definitely satisfy 2-3 people. This dish didn't really blow me away as the duck was a bit dry in certain areas but the spicy sauce that it came with really helped with that. My other main takeaway was definitely the Cornhusk Meringue. I never had too many meringues in my life but I heard about this infamous dessert so I just had to see what the hype was about. MY GOOOOODNESS. If you were to dine here, please just do yourself a favor and get this dessert. Probably one of the best $14 I have spent my entire life. The outer layer was a bit sweet, but the corn mousse that was inside was a bit salty and it balanced the shell perfectly. Very light, I did not feel guilty eating that dessert. Highly recommend this dessert and the salad. Not to mention Todd English's son was dining there as well. Talk about eye candy all night!
Overrated and expensive. Got a bunch of dishes to share and none of them were really memorable. We got scallop and octopus, which was decent, guacamole, soft shell crab, duck carnitas, tlayuda, husk meringue, and rhubarb dessert. The only thing I say you definitely need to try is the husk meringue! It was special. The others combine flavors that don't always go well together. Reservations are a little tough to get too.
I was excited to try cosme when recently in New York. I had seen the Chef's Table episode of Enrique Olivera and his Mexico City restaurant Pujols.
We went for brunch. It is a beautiful space, spacious and with a huge staff. The menu seemed pretty limited for brunch but all the choices looked amazing. I tried the chiqualiques and they were some of her best ever- the tortillas were sublime, and the salsa s. I ordered also a Bloody Maria, which was super spicy but super delicious. I would highly recommend.
I'd heard of Cosme before but like another reviewer it was after watching Chefs Table that I decided to come here. My husband and I came for dinner on a Friday night. It pays to reserve several weeks in advance: we booked 4 weeks before online and could only get a early table, at 6:15pm.
We ordered 6 dishes including a salad plus one dessert, which was plenty. The servings are medium sized; I wouldn't describe them as small. We definitely left feeling full. If you're not starving, 2 plates each might suffice. Plates are grouped according to "lightness". Three of our dishes were from the first group: uni tostada, octopus scallop cocktail, ayacote bean salad. I liked all of them and definitely recommend the uni tostada. Calamari was fine as was the soft shell crab and branzino but we were quite full by the fish serving time and couldn't have many of the accompanying tortillas. We did make room for dessert because I had been dying to try the corn mousse and husk meringue. It was my favourite dish of the night.
Yes, it's pricey, just like any other nice meal anywhere, especially New York. The setting is dark and modern. I would say noise levels are quite high. Our service was very good.
I enjoyed our dining experience. It is nice to have the flavours of modern Mexican with fresh lime, avocado and many herbs with good quality seafood in a refined way. I would return especially to have the meringue and corn mousse again!
3.5 stars!
Love the decor! This has been on my list since forever. We got the tuna taco which was amazing however very small for the price you are paying. The duck main dish which was….. Not the greatest. It was definitely unique but the sauce seems a bit overpowering. We also got the quinoa salad with sesame dressing or some sort and that kick that it had was amazing. It is probably one of the best salads ever! We also got the corn husk merengue dessert, and it was not to my liking at all. It wA too sweet, the texture was not pleasant but I reallllly wanted to like it…… 🙁
I would come back to try new dishes but definitely get the quinoa salad.
Over rated!!! So sad as this place has been bookmark for over a year and the reservations are slim unless your a 9pm eater. We finally made it and I faced the fact that I will starve until 9:45p. Walked in at 9:15p the place was packed! Checked in with the hostess and then proceeded to the bar where I was hoping I would love my jalapeño margarita… Unfortunately it tasted like water down juice. Waited until 10:15pm to be seated and started ordering.
The wine list was not impressive at all but we found a mencia one that would hold us over. The mark up was ridiculous and they charge a $50 corkage fee so what do you do??? The only thing that was good was the purple potato tamale and the octopus starter. Also, their hot sauce lacked any heat… A little disappointed for all the hype this spot has been given.
As a bi-coastal person who normally stick to the LA = TACO and NYC = PIZZA rule, I bow down to the greatness that would have me order an Al Pastor taco on the right coast. Jeez Louise this was insane. The sliced pork, pineapple and sauce in a tortilla is like a dream I had once.
These cocktails are on point. It's like the tequila version of NoMad cocktails. Holy whoa yum. My new go-to when I'm in this area of town.
The cheesecake at the end was quite savory and special. Thank goodness people with class and taste created this lovely establishment.
