“It is a bit pricey, but stick to one protein, one veggie and one sauce and order 2 or order 1 plus a side and you will be full.”

“We were sightseeing NY and just happened to walk past their outdoor order window & tried the build your own.”

  1. Yum, but I think I ate about a month worth of grease.

+: The chimichurri sauce is wonderfully fresh. I could actually taste the parsley and garlic and all that goodness.
+: The arepa itself is crunchy and delicious
+: The packaging is very well done and convenient to hold if you want to eat on the go.

-: Pork shoulder isn't as flavorful as I would have liked and a bit dry
-: Kind of pricey. I picked one protein and two toppings. It came out to be over $10. The $5.50 mango juice was so so.
-: The arepa was soaked in oil and left a pool of grease at the bottom of the container. Ay Chihuahua! I had to eat salad for dinner to alleviate the guilt.

Still would come back, but my arteries no les gusta.

  2. I'm a sucker for places like these: Latin inspired dishes dolled up to the point where it moves on up from the humble but traditional grease cart to the trendy overpriced stands of New York City.

Was not a fan of Leña, but this little place is far better with a lot more personality packed into a tiny booth.

The Colombian is a good choice to start with. Otherwise, have fun making your own arepa.

I like to keep the ingredients to a minimum to focus on the meat and sauce. Keep in mind that the corn patty is going to be very very very sweet so work around that when creating your own concoction. Never ventured outside of caramelized onions, mushroom or peppers. The mushrooms in particular are simple but done well.

All of the meat will garner good reviews. Short rib is probably my favorite. Skirt steak was good when I wasn't getting the jiggling fatty parts of it. The proportions were generous, but that would be my main complaint.

Don't be afraid of the spice meter for the sauces. The Green Tomatillo will get my top rating, but it is more of a zest than a spicy topping.

Not my favorite place for arepas, but this place is one of the better and more original locations to get food around the area.

  3. This spot is such a gem! Do not underestimate it because there are no tables, I mean just grab an arepa and eat standing in the streets of NYC… it cannot get any better than that.

Anyways we were walking by and decided to stop here. You can make your own arepa or pick one of 3 main selections that they offer. The menu is quite straightforward. You pick a protein (if any), sides, and a sauce.

I had the arepa with no protein, avocado, black beans, sweet plantain, and queso! My bf had the arepa with chicken, sweet plantain, black beans and the pico de gallo sauce.

The staff is super nice and helpful with the menu. They are quick and efficient. The prices are just right, considering that it is NYC. If you are around the area then you have to give this place a try! Such a genuine and yummy experience.

  4. Stumbled upon their outdoor order window in Herald Square and happy I did! Super friendly and delicious arepas.

I ordered the Venezuelan with added chicken. The sweet plantains in this arepa is what made it great.

  5. So good and so much food! I ordered two to try them but one was more than enough. Had a beef with avocado and spicy sauce that was just divine. The perfect warm arepa pocket and overflowing with juicy meat in the perfect midday on the go snack! My second one was the Caribbean styled pork which was one of their pre-made suggestions. Not bad but man oh man I'm dreaming about the slow cooked beef just writing this review!!!

  6. If you're looking for a good place for lunch near mid town, this can be a good place to eat. It's the hole-in-the wall place and there's no seating nearby. You would need to bring the food somewhere else to eat, but there can be seating near 33rd street or bryant park!

FOOD: I ordered one arepa with pork shoulder, mushrooms, plantains, and mango salsa. The arepa is made with classic corn flour. The arepa has a base price and for each meat and topping, they add an additional charge. My arepa came out to around $9. For the food around midtown, this kind of pricing is expected. However, I do think the arepa was a bit on the pricer side. The arepa itself was tasty, although I expected more sauce and flavor. It was a bit bland for South American food in my opinion. Food comes a convenient to-go container.

SERVICE: They take orders on ipads and it takes them about five minutes for them to make the arepa.

    OVERALL: Satisfactory bites.

  7. They were filming something here when I showed up for some reason. Had a plain arepa solely as the prices are way too high, especially for a take-out stand. Woman was pleasant. Arepa was OK. Not the best I have had, especially for the price.

    2.3

  8. You would think there would be more quality food options in midtown but there aren't.

If you are looking for a quick bite this to-go restaurant is your best bet near the ESB. I ordered two arepas but one would have been PLENTY. The toppings will add up in cost so don't go too crazy. The sauces were delicious but I wish there was a little more as mine were a tad bit dry. The arepa with short rib and queso was the better of the two. These are packaged perfectly to eat while walking or to take to your final destination to enjoy.

And hey, this beats Subway, Starbucks and the like by ten miles and they take credit/debit cards.
