I've eaten here once before but barely remember. Was craving BBQ after the snowstorm (#jonas) and decided to give Daisy May's another try.
So I placed an order that never came. Thanks.
After about 37 minutes, I excitedly answered my phone – but it wasn't the delivery guy, it was someone from Eat24. The delivery guy said he waited at my house for 25 minutes and then left because he could't get in touch with me. Oh… okay. So the order was supposed to come in 45-60 minutes, and I'm excited and picked up my phone when Eat24 called, but not the delivery guy? And he came to my door, but didn't interact with my doorman in any way. Oh, okay.
So Eat24 tells me my order is coming back, it'll be hot, and it'll be there within 30 minutes. 30 minutes later, I call both Eat24 and Daisy May's, and neither has an update. After another 20 minutes, I just told both places to cancel the order and give me a refund. I waited exactly 2 hours start to finish before giving up.
Definitely will never order Daisy May's again, probably will never visit them, and will also not use Eat24 again. That's never happened to me on Seamless.
Flavor is spot on.. like a lunch hideout dive on an aging industrial back block… simple food.. with a takeout counter… NYC prices.
Its all about the flavor.. and its here.. its here!
Popped in with friends after a Macallan Event on 12th Ave I felt more drunk than I probably should have after a beer or two and four shots last night. But hey. I was starving. The area is pretty bereft of food and anywhere to go. This isn't the place to go for best bbq in New York. By any means at all. But it isn't absolutely horrible either. Wavering back and forth between 2 and 3 stars. But I felt bad because so many Yelpers keep boasting about how tasty their ribs and pork and brisket burnt ends are, all of which I didn't try and I am giving this place basically the benefit of the doubt. Everything is way over-priced for what you are getting. I ordered a combo that should have been $12 something and it added up to $14 something. I'm guessing tax? But I also took my food to go.
Pulled chicken was slathered with a mediocre bland bbq sauce. Kind of swimming in the Jack Daniels bbq sauce. The highlight for me though was their mac and cheese. I'm pretty picky but this was really freaking tasty mac and cheese. For as disgusting as it kind of looks. It reminded me of Boston Market's. At least in taste. (Which I haven't had in years) But that might be a huge slam in the face now that I think about it. There is nothing home-made about it but it is super creamy and boasting of three different kinds of cheeses and sprinkled with a liberal amount of Paprika! Yellow cheese. Thick, bright, yellow artificial cheeses. Yum yum. Boston Market. I am kind of joking here. But it isn't as bad as the Strand Smokehouse's macaroni by any means whatsoever.
Their sweet potato mash side was unfortunately way worse than my tasty processed mac and cheese. It was sweet potato puree. Runny, soupy, baby food mashed sweet potatoes mixed with mashed bananas and brown sugar. Yuck. There was nothing natural tasting about it. What makes matters worse is that all of these sides are sitting out in bins cafeteria style for lord knows how long. Each of these sides also runs you about $4.90 on their own for a small. With my add ons to my pulled chicken and 2 sides it was a little over $14. Not horrible. But if I'm just coming in for a small side which I almost did instead of get a combo, it isn't worth my money at all. During certain hours of the day Monday-Wednesday though they do have $1 beer bottles. So they have that going for them. But when am I realistically ever going to be back on 11th Avenue in Midtown? Come on now.
The BBQ was great especially the giant beef rib, but the sides were to die for. I cannot talk enough about the sweet potato mash with bananas. So rich n sweet n buttery. OMG. The creamed spinach was so light it was almost a mousee buttery garlicy fluffy… the beans n rice was on point. The cornbread was moist n sweet… ohhhh I could live on this food. It's as gulf Coast as I have ever found.
I tried the beef rib at Carnal at Smorgasburg and was suddenly hit with beef-rib-fever and needed more. Fast. So I searched The Google for answers and the universe did not disappoint. The monstrous Oklahoma Beef Rib (why is it Oklahoma? Did they invent the grilling style or is it because it looks like the state, which it kind of does actually) was to be located and devoured on 11th Ave and 46th Street. I took a cab right after work with a friend and headed to carnivore heaven.
Most of the back picnic tables last night were reserved (I'm guessing for the pig picking which cost nearly $500 or something) so we dropped all our stuff off on the counter seats in front of the window and waddled on over to the food counter. There were three people working that night: two ladies and a mustached man. One of the ladies and the man were very friendly and got me everything I needed. The lady at the cashier wasn't rude or anything, but wasn't super welcoming. Like, the type of person that you're scared of asking for more sauce or something. Also, when I asked her for a cup of water, she said they don't have tap water. WHAT?! Is that even legal? I dunno, someone tell me about restaurant law because that seemed grossly egregious. Anyway, onto the food.
I believe the Oklahoma beef rib was about $26 (pre-tax) and about $30 if you include two sides, which I did. I picked the coleslaw and the mash potatoes with the red gravy. The food came out almost immediately, which made me both happy and a bit worried. What if my meat had been cooking for so long it was no longer tender? But have no fear, once I cut into this piece of meat, my anxieties melted away.
First of all, this cut of meat is preposterous and ludicrous. A human being should not be able to order a piece of cow so big unless they are a Flintstone. I think they advertise it as 1.5lbs but I swear that it's at least 2lbs. My heart was racing when I stared down this beauty, crying out to me. My plastic knife and fork worked through the tender meat like it was butter. There were a few parts that were dry, but I'm not complaining. There was a lot of fat, like people said, but I LOVE FAT. And it complemented the more stringy parts of the meat. I killed that baby by myself, much to my coworker's disbelief. The coleslaw was alright but the gravy on the mashed potatoes was DELICIOUS. I would definitely recommend the more starchy sides to go with the beef rib because it is so oily. Also, get a side of barbecue sauce, as it helps diminish the oiliness.
The main downside was the brisket, which my friend ordered. It was VERY dry and tough, as though it had been sitting in barbecue sauce for a very long time. I would never order it. He really enjoyed his macaroni and cheese though.
All in all, I would definitely come back for the beef ribs!!! Try it out!!!
This review is for their take-out service.
If you're at home wanting some BBQ delivered, this is a good choice. I used Seamless to order, and it was pretty quick. The portions were perfect, I actually couldn't finish. I got a combo with pulled chicken, mashed potatoes, and macaroni and cheese, as well as bourbon peaches for dessert (no wonder I couldn't finish, right?). Everything was hot and good. I will most likely order-in again.
Their BBQ is merely adequate. What throws me is their need to drown everything in way too much sauce.
It's nice that things haven't fallen off with the addition of a large dining room.
Truth be told, this was once the go-to BBQ place when there were so few options in NYC. Nowadays, since the BBQ boom has hit NYC, there are far better options all over, in Manhattan and especially Brooklyn.
They are friendly and efficient. However nothing here is exceptional or special.
I tried Daisy May's BBQ. I had the beef ribs. It was good, a little fatty but ok. I had also tried the collard greens and Mac and cheese which was good as well. It did come with a big piece of corn bread. I've had better BBQ. But it was ok. I eat here a while ago, but my review got deleted so I'm rewriting it
