  1. Brad works here, and is clueless, so he sold the wrong things at the wrong prices and even gave away a lot of merchandise. When the owners found out, they were angry. Brad said, "we didn't know what I was supposed to do. What should I do next time?" The owners responded. "Damn. Ask us, Brad." That response became so infamous, that it also became the name of the store. Damnaskus Brad.

What to get: Lamb Burek, Stuffed Squash, Babaghanoush.
What else: Don't leave Brad in charge of your store.

This is a grocery store in the heart of Brooklyn selling Middle Eastern goods and prepared foods. I am thinking it's Syrian, since Damascus is the capital of Syria, and yes I am completely syrious. Also I heard it on Sirius radio. While I was driving on the Road to Damascus.

What I've had from here that was very good:

    – Lamb Burek – it wasn't on the level of Duck-a-genie in the Bronx but it was good.
    – Stuffed Squash – I'm not a fan in general but my friend who loves stuffed squash, loved it.
    – Babaghanoush – not the best I've ever had but nevertheless very enjoyable.

The prices are also very competitive and some things are downright cheap, especially for Brooklyn.

What I've had from here that wasn't as good:

    – The Shawarma sandwich. My friend loved it, but I found it to be a little dry, a little uninteresting, and a little average.

Overall it scores a 4 star rating but it's a solid 4. Speaking of solid. (Pulls down pants).

  2. Glad I found this place. I originally came to go to to Sahadi's, 2 doors down, but I was very disappointed with their selection. When leaving I found Damascus Bread and Pastry shop and find everything I needed at good prices.

On top of that, the people who work there are extremely friendly, welcoming, and helpful.

  3. My roommate and I were craving hummus and went to check out places in the area. This place is pretty popular with regulars, and I can see why. I had gotten the spinach and garlic spread along with a chicken sandwich – all really good! You can taste the freshness in everything. Plus side was that it didn't burn a hole in my wallet!

  4. 5 stars for their insanely addictive white "triangle"/pita bread and hummus. Haven't been back to Sahadis in a decade since discovering this Damascus. The trick is that you have to get and eat the bread fresh.  While available 7 days a week it is only baked and delivered fresh Monday-Saturday and trust me, this bread is only good for about 8 hours after it is made (it is packaged in clear plastic bags in plastic racks towards back of counter). After that it just turns from magical to standard store bought triangle bread.

Smear some of their hummus on their fresh bread, top with fresh cucumber slices and salt and pepper and you will be hooked.

By the way, they just introduced their own pizza flat bread that is excellent.  Add your on toppings and throw in oven for 10mns and you have the perfect pie.  Their flat bread is now available everywhere from Whole Foods to Associated; however, we have found it is about $2 cheaper directly from Damascus.

Aside from the food, they get 5 stars for how friendly they are.  Make you feel welcome every time you come in.

  5. Love this place! Everything is super delicious and authentic. You can buy pretty much anything from a snack, lunch to some dessert. I love their meat pies, spinach pies, sweets and baklava. I highly recommend stopping in at this little gem. You won't be disappointed. The staff is always friendly and helpful.

  6. Of course walking back to NYC I see this place and go in and there's a ton of choices.  I went with two pockets:  Spinach and Potato and Chicken.  The chicken was delicious and probably great warmed.  The spinach and potato were ok and a little sour.  I just ate a falafel wrap at Bedouin so a little full.

  7. I get the falafel sandwich for $4.50 for lunch at least once a week. So you may say Mike likes their falafels. They have other great fresh snack alternatives like homemade hummus and pita bread. Dude that runs the shop recognized me after just a few visits. He says hello friend, which means we are besties. Everything is a good deal here. Just make sure not to go when I go, so I don't have to wait

  8. I love this strip on Atlantic Ave. You've got so many authentic Middle Eastern food options, from Yemen Cafe to Sahadi's and of course, Damascus.

Came here for the first time this past weekend and trust me- if you appreciate good Syrian food you will adore this shop.

I got the spinach pocket and the fresh made halva. Good mother of desserts, that stuff was awesome. If you've never had halva before I highly recommend putting your face in it. It's tough to describe but just think rich and flaky almond paste with a twist. The spinach pie was also yummy but slightly sour.

The owner is very kind and clearly takes pride in his shop.

I can't wait to go back this weekend and try more. *cash only!*
