It seems that everyone complains about the sushi. Why would you get Sushi in this type of place anyway?
The fact that they have one of my favorite desserts, is why i went here along with it being right next near the movie theater.
Anyway:
Nasu shigyaki: 1.5/5
Weirdly light and not too sweet. Portion was kinda bad for the price. Not recommended
Green Tea:
Good portion, nicely iced. Unsweetened as I like it. Was probably ito-en.
Zenzai: 4.0/5
Good portion of red bean soup and a good amount of mochi. Was piping hot and very.
5.5/10
2.25
Prices were pretty high outside of dessert/drink. 2.0/5. Great desserts, other stuff, not so much.
It's close to AMC (if I may join in with the chorus of many), service was friendly and quick (in and out the door in 30 minutes), and the food was passable.
I came here thinking, "You know what? Maybe I'll forgo my usual avocado and [insert additional vegetable-based] rolls and go for something different." The vegetable raman looked appitizing on paper, and for the size I got, it was certainly worth the $10.75. Still, there was something oddly murky about it that I can't quite place my finger on. Maybe it was the turbid brown broth and the Raman noodles that may very well have been bought at Duane Reade. The fresh cut scallions were a welcomed addition, but the vegetables (namely the carrots and broccoli) were a bit par-cooked: not quite crunchy, but not quite mushy either.
My friend Em got a dish with rice, egg, and eel. Once again, she said it was passable, filling, good enough. No real exuberance to any of those statements.
Funny. We ended up coming here after making fun of a friend who only wants to eat sushi and Japanese with us. "All kidding aside," my friend said, "Do you actually want to go in here?" Well, we did, as you see. And…well…
I know this neighborhood well. I know the other dining establishments. (I now regret not pushing harder to go to Nanoosh…) I do not see myself returning to Dan, even if I am on my way to the movies and need a quick bite to eat. I'll get an overly priced 12,534 calorie small bag of popcorn at the theater instead and call it a night.
came on the fly to have dinner before seeing a movie at lincoln center. good find. ordered the beef negimaki bento and really enjoyed it. loved the tempura that came with too. would definitely recommend to others who want to grab a bite before the movie.
D A N = B A D
I came here with a few friends to celebrate a birthday on a Friday night in August. This place was a major disappointment.
I had the chirashi sashimi[1], which was nicely presented in a bowl of rice with two slices of watermelon[2] and two slices of avocado.
Unfortunately the sashimi was just poor quality: each piece was bland and tasteless, barely discernible from the next in terms of both taste and texture. The best thing of the meal was the miso soup and the rice. Enough said.
Perhaps, being a "tempura house", I should have ordered tempura. On
the other hand, if the quality of their sushi is any indication, I think I'll pass.

[1] Tuna, salmon, shrimp, yellowtail, fluke, Spanish mackerel, eel, ikura, arctic char & striped bass; $18.75.
[2] This is actually new to me: I've never seen sushi or sashimi served with watermelon. The watermelon was actually sweet an juicy, so I didn't mind.
Was doing some shopping on the UWS, was in the mood for a light lunch and strolled on in. My gf and I both had a bento box, I went with the sushi, she had the sashimi. I'd say both were pretty average. I guess its hard to fuck up a bento box too? All in all, I was happy with it. Prices are reasonable, service was good and they even refilled my glass of water 3 times. We came in on a Saturday afternoon and aside from us and another family, place was completely dead? Made me wonder why… oh well.
Wow my gf wanted to eat here because she wanted chicken teriyaki. Little did we know is that we should have checked this place on yelp 1st. This place is a dive, and the only reason we came here is the close proximity to the Lincoln Square movie theatre. We came here for lunch. My gf got the chicken teriyaki box and i got the beef negimaki box. They both were terrible.I was very disappointed in the foods. The miso soup and green salads were delightful, but our actual meat portions were subpar by far.
Def avoid this place. Tenzan is a few blocks away and I enjoyed my experience there more…well the UES location.
Wow that was a lot of food and not that bad….is what you'll be saying to yourself after dining at Dan Tempura house (I think this place may have changed its name a couple of times, it's now called Dan's Japanese Restaurant I believe).
Thought I would never venture out to here as a main destination, Dan's makes for a great pre-Lincoln center movie experience that take no planning.
For less than $20, you can get a giant bento. My friend and I got the PORK KATSU and Chicken KATSU bento. What does it come with?…….lots of food. Since standards are high in NYC, I can only give the food 3/5 stars, but I really can't complain about any one piece of the meal.
#Bento: miso soup, rice, salad, shumai, cali rolls, veggie and shrimp tempura. Hard to beat in value.
OVERALL: great deal. if you're around the area and need to fill up with good food, come here, don't mind the 2.5 star review average.
Like many people, my friends and I had gone to Dan's simply because we were going to watch a movie at the theater next door. The experience here was awful, however if you are stuck eating here absolutely do not order the sushi it's neither fresh, good or tasty. In addition, the sides that came with my bento box just tasted gross. Your safe bet is to go with hot foods… but not the noodles either. My friend who had ordered a nabeyaki udon got something that was not very authentically Japanese. Overall, pass!
