Love that everything is veggie and I can eat anything and everything. The fried basil rice is some of the best fried rice I have had. Super dumplings and scallion pancakes. Loved the tempura though it didn't seem to have any taro (my fav starch).
Whatchu know about Dao? Dao/Taoism is all about a philosophical sense of harmony, the kind of good vibes you'll be enjoying when you eat at this vegan Chinese spot. We've only ever ordered takeaway here, but I'm so glad we did because I've passed the restaurant and never known what lay just beyond the doors- turns out it was tofu!
Living in Prospect Lefferts/Crown Heights, I've seen my fair share of greasy, unhealthy vegetarian food. Not a big fan. Dao is a breath of fresh air in the vegan/vegetarian takeaway scene. I love that the food is full of flavor, not sugar or gooey sauce. Here's the 411:
-Sweet and Sour Sesame Protein/"Chicken": Fresh tasting produce (not soggy or sad!) including red pepper, broccoli, and mangos. Sauce was a bit light, but I thought the protein had a ton of flavor, tangy/sour/sweet/delicious. As an "entree" it comes with rice and a soup/salad. Pretty great deal.
-Korean Style Glass Noodles: Huge portion, really interesting umami flavor, perfect texture on the noodles.
-Spring Rolls: Crunchy, not greasy, and great plum sauce!
Pro tip: Yelp says they don't deliver to me (Empire/Bedford), but they will if you call. Delivery win, yes!
I know that M likes to order from them once in a while but each time, I think I will be happily surprised and I'm not. It' A-OK exactly like the three star rating.
Came in for Take Out..ordered pineapple fried rice -minus soy ham, vegetable dumplings, Seitan skewers, spring rolls and spinach shumai…everything was visually enticing and mouth wateringly delicious.
Definitely a fan of Dao Palate where you can get lots of veggie friendly and healthy bites. My recent takeout order included the Spinach Shumai, Scallion Pancakes, and Tofu Nuggets. What can i say? i love food that is cute, contained, and delicious. i enjoyed all three items.
Why not 5 stars? Despite it being a Thursday evening, not busy at all, and my order really was quite small, the wait of 30 minutes for the food wasn't really justifiable.
But no big deal, i'm sure i'll be back for more scrumptiousness.
*Tip: You can only use your credit card for orders above $15. Save yourself the trouble and just bring cash.
If you are a fan of seitan, this is the place for you! A wide selection of vegan and vegetarian food, Itms going to be hard to choose what to have.
The rice was perfect and brown. The seitan…that was real good!
3.5 stars. This is a very nice vegan Chinese restaurant with lovely decor. The food for the most part is quite tasty, although the "ham" is kind of nasty. The summer rolls are absolutely delicious, as is the avocado/mountain yam tartar, and the tom yum soup is fantastic: better than at any of the local Thai places. My one complaint is that the menu is a bit heavy on soy protein. I just wish there were more fresh vegetable options and more dishes that were not seitan-based.
Alert: This place is rad for vegans, vegetarians and almost vegetarians (like me) who are looking for a spot that DELIVERS and ACCEPTS CREDIT CARDS.
Puh-lease. ONLY 3.5 stars for this place? It completely supersedes Wild Ginger AND delivers far and wide (in Brooklyn). It is my safe and foolproof delivery joint. I'm giving it 5 stars for its convenience. Accepts credit cards, wide delivery area, great menu items (but be discerning, some are excellent, others just good), great customer service.
If you have not ordered here in recent history, try again – because the item I am about to discuss is new.
(Wait, I digress. There are some items that are just OK, but don't order them).
Ok, have you even *tried* the "Crispy Soy Protein with Savory Tomato Sauce over Kale????" I really cannot describe it (it is clearly a favorite on Seamless, MenuPages, etc….). The breading of the round and flat soy nuggets is delicately flavored and it sits on a bed of spicy sauce and kale. It's superb.
Oh, also order the "Scallion Pancakes with Homemade Mango Salsa". That is always a must in my household.
Add one of their fresh fruit/veggie juices. Really good and refreshing.
Last but not least? The Peanut Butter Bomb!!! PLEASE, just order it. Carnivores will be shocked, everyone can indulge together. It is decadent without that nauseous throat feeling that one often gets when eating too much chocolate. When we order it, we savor the flavor for 2-3 days. A gem of a vegan dessert. Also a favorite item on seamless, MenuPages…
Other tried and tested dishes that are great (probably not as good as the aforementioned):
-Stir-fried flat noodle with Chinese broccoli
-Eggplant and String Beans in Garlic Sauce
-Vegetable Medley Lettuce Wraps – for the carb averse
