Dawa's is probably the hottest and newest brunch spots in Queens at the moment. Better yet, it is something unique and different to the brunch scene. It is Tibetan-American style! While there are already established Tibetan spots in Queens, having it as brunch is a first for me. Dawa's serves up American breakfast items such as french toast, pancakes, baked eggs, and etc. and they have Tibetan Momo dumplings.
Baked Eggs dish is probably the most popular item here. The one was with two eggs, garlic scape, roasted potatoes, asparagus, and a sourdough toast in a super hot skillet. I loved the spicy red sauce that tops the eggs. It was pretty good when you mix everything together!
Momo Dumplings are surprisingly really good! My party shared a Vegetable, Chicken, and Beef dish. The orange spicy sauce was amazing! It had just the perfect amount of heat and filled with spices!
Fresh Squeezed Orange Juice. It is a tiny cup of juice but sweet and refreshing.
The menu changes almost weekly so whatever is printed on the paper is what they are currently offering. Do not count on their chalkboard!
4 stars is only for the food
A nice walk from the 52nd St station to Dawa's as me and other friend were meeting up with our two other friends for a girls' brunch. The restaurant was already packed and my friends were sitting on a large white wooded table. The blackboard menu is apparently no longer available totally bummer because my friend really wanted to try the poached eggs and smoke salmon. Cute twist of Tibetan food with American brunch style.
Food:
JC: French Toast + Chicken Momo
CD: Baked Eggs + Orange Juice
CZ: Baked Eggs + Vegetable Momo + Beet and Orange Juice
Me: Beef Momo (first time ever trying momos and its quite tasty and the momo wrapper is more thicker than dumplings…the spicy is was just so delicious) + Buttermilk Chicken Sandwich (very crunchy chicken skin and quite flavorful) + Orange Juice
Note: The Chicken Momo and Vegetable Momo have the same color wrapper which the kitchen should make the vegetable a different color to distinguish it as one of my friends doesn't eat meat!
The service here and food coming out the kitchen is pretty slow just a heads up but overall the food was very yummy!
Had a really wonderful brunch at this very laid back cafe! Interior is very simple yet rustic. The menu combines farm to table brunch choices with a variety of Tibetan dishes. I decided to try their quinoa salad along with some chicken momos. Quinoa salad was fantastic – it included tart green apples which provided the perfect balance of flavor. The chicken momos were also very good! My favorite momos are from a cart in Jackson heights – so I'm used to them being very thick, meaty and smothered in chili sauce. Here, the momos are much cleaner, neatly arranged atop a bed of sauce. The filling is nicely spiced and the dough is not very thick. You can ask for some chili on the side, which I really enjoyed!
What I really enjoyed about this place, aside from the food and quaint atmosphere, is their use of beautiful ceramics. The food is served in unique bowls along with gorgeous cutlery, which I couldn't help but admire! Also, the prices are extremely reasonable. From what I remember, everything was under 10 bucks. I will definitely be back to try their other offerings!
I stopped by for afternoon cappuccino and I was pleasantly surprised by the new renovation and menu. I'm planning to come back for brunch as they are serving brunch everyday.
I came here at 10:30 AM today for a breakfast sandwich – unfortunately they were out of bagels and croissants, but oh well.
Got the Bacon egg and cheese. Service was friendly and fast. They atmosphere was great, too. I look forward to coming back and trying something else. The sandwich was really good. Prices are not bad, either!
One word. DELICIOUS!!
Glad to find this cute rustic themed restaurant around Queens! Its a great addition to the neighborhood. I enjoyed every food that we ordered here. The place is cozy & spacious.
I got cappuccino for drink & my bf got iced coffee. For food I got the baked egg with potato & asparagus- it was simply tasty. I didn't expect that this simple dish can be this delicious. My bf got chicken sandwich with potato chips on the side- he enjoyed every bite of it. The chicken is juicy inside & has a crispy coating. We also got the avocado toast to share- it was so flavorful. A little salty & sweet. It has corn & nuts on it. This is way better than any other avocado toast I've tried. The price is very reasonable for $6.
The people that sat next to us even called the chef to ask her about the food because they're very impressed. Shes very nice to chitchat with them & I found out shes the owner/chef of the restaurant.
Hands down to Chef Dawa for this tasty food! Its simply amazing!
I feel like a 4* rating is a tad high, as I wasn't hugely impressed by Dawa's and found my meal pretty good but not amazing. There are other places that I'd rather go for brunch and given that Dawa's doesn't have a liquor license, other restaurants present as more appealing brunch destinations. The food here is prepared with care, and they use quality ingredients, but the waits are long and the food you get here isn't worth a long trek. That said, I haven't tried their Tibetan food so I can't comment on that (though there are a number of Himalayan options in the Sunnyside/Woodside/Jackson Heights area).
The much-hyped fried chicken sandwich: just as everyone describes, this is a skillfully executed dish. The chicken is moist and tender and the fry coat is perfectly crispy, crunchy, and not too heavy. The brioche-y bun stands up well to the chicken, and the only changes I would make to this dish are: adding more pickled onions for flavor/texture dimension, and subbing the potato chips (which are excellent: thin, crispy, and fresh — but not a great match for the sandwich) with some other sort of side, maybe a slaw.
The fish tacos were totally fine. However, you can definitely get better tacos for less money at any number of Mexican trucks/restaurants around here.
Dawa's is a cute, light-filled, and hip-looking place (and they carry fancy Dammann Freres tea), with friendly service and reasonable brunch prices, but I'm not sure I'd venture out here if I weren't already in the neighborhood.
