I'm not a huge foodie of Indian cuisine, but the food at Dawat tasted good to me! For my meal, I ordered a Chicken Khasta Keema, but they didn't have any Keema so the waiter recommended me the Chicken Chettinad. The food itself was a little spicy (but maybe I'm just not as strong as others), but overall manageable. They also offered delicious poppadum befor the start of the meal.
The ambiance of the restaurant is very nice. There is nice decor and there is a romantic and upscale feel to this restaurant. Little details such as the placement of the napkins and decorated water pitchers add to the good feel of the place.
However, the one factor that earned this place a lower review is the service that was at the restaurant. The server was very courteous; however, he paid nearly no attention to me and only seemed to address my friend at the table. He would direct all the questions to my friend and seemed to avoid eye contact with me. Maybe it was because my friend was Indian and I was not, but I would have appreciated him addressing us both.
I originally found this place by purchasing a Groupon ($12 for $20) worth of food. At the end of the meal, we asked for the check and showed the waiter the Groupon we had purchased. Now, this is where it was my fault for not paying more careful attention. He took my phone and marked the Groupon as used and then said "$10 more. You need to pay by cash." I handed him a $10 bill and then we left. I started thinking about this on the car ride home, we never actually got the check. I ordered a $13 dish and my friend ordered a $14 dish. Even with tax included, I should have gotten change back. That couple of dollars doesn't really matter to me, but the shady business practices do matter. The waiter also demanded that we pay in cash, but there was no sign about a credit card minimum visible. This was partially my fault because I should have been more vigilant about it, but I would have appreciated much better service.
Owned by the operator of the much missed Khyber Grill, this is high quality food, with high quality service in a nice atmosphere. it has a mixture of northern and southern India dishes. The Chicken Chettinad, eggplant and lamb chops are excellent and the chicken curry and chicken gongura very good.
BYO and reasonable prices. It is in the corner of a shopping center, so it is a little hard to spot.
