  1. We had a great time at Death Ave's Monday outdoor movie night…despite the disappointing food and drinks.

First of all, this is a great space located right off the High Line. An indoor bar and dining room open up into this lovely outdoor area, complete with a fancy cabana. We came to this outdoor area to watch a free screening of Bonnie and Clyde (with dinner purchase). The movie and the atmosphere were great.

We started off with drinks. My boyfriend had a beer and I opted to try the banana-infused whiskey because some Yelper said it was really good. It was certainly interesting, but it essentially tasted like an alcoholic overripe banana. I probably wouldn't have it again. Next we ordered the cheese plate and the lamb shank to share. The first problem was that they took forever to come, and we were starving, although the issue was later rectified as we were given free drinks. The second problem was more difficult to solve: The food was not good. I enjoyed exactly one cheese from the cheese plate (a nice smoky variety), and the rest of this $28 purchase tasted like it came straight from Ctown. The lamb shank, served on a bed of overcooked pasta, was worse. I'm not sure how to describe the flavor, but it was bland and just generally unpleasant.

My second (free) drink, a spicy strawberry jalapeño margarita, was pretty good, but not really worth whatever they were charging.

I couldn't possibly recommend Death Ave for the food, but if you're looking strictly for atmosphere or dinner + an outdoor movie, then maybe.

  2. After attending a Yelp event here a year ago, I couldn't resist coming back here again. I had a hotel in the area and as I'm not a big fan of tourist traps of where I was staying, I was more than happy to make the 15 min walk from Penn Station over to Death Ave.
Don't let this name fool you, it's just a reference to the olden days when people where killed by the heavy traffic on the road.

The interior of Death Ave is very romantic and cosy. Woodpannelled bar and relief bricks all around keep the place warm and intimate. The dining room area is located in the back with a few tables and when the sun is out, they have the BIGGEST patio for a New York Restaurant with an outside bar.

I seated myself at one of the hightops in front of the bar. Service was quick and very friendly. For food, I ordered the 8 hour squid and the Souvlaki taco which are a house speciality. Don't let the prices of the first items fool you and scare you to decide on this place. The prices of the items are very fair and the portions are very nice.

The squid was probably one of the softest pieces of squid I have ever had and the beans that come with it were a perfect combination of accidic and sweet.
But than the tacos… There were no words for the flavors in these tacos. They make Mexican taco look obsolete. Perfect tender meat and the tzaziki that they top it off with, has just the perfect consistancy.

Death Ave is definitely a place worth visiting whether you are looking or visiting. The area is still up and coming but it's just off the High Line which makes it easy accessible when you are walking over there.

  3. Super cute bar/restaurant all the way on 10th Ave. I first discovered this place at a Yelp Elite event back in September. I really liked the atmosphere – lots of space and they have a big covered patio in the back that looks like it's a lot of fun when it's nice out. I believe they even have a brewery in the basement, although I didn't see it.

My office is only a few avenues away, so after calling around and checking LOTS of places..I decided to book my company holiday party at Death Ave. They have a private room in the back that holds up to 36, which is exactly the number of people I needed to seat. They gave us a great deal, and a good variety of options (which was perfect as I had a very picky and opinionated crowd to please!) so I went for it.

Everyone was very impressed with the room and the service. I think the apps were our favorite part. We started with a cheese/meat tasting and a nice spread of hummus and pitas. The rest of the food was great too, with the exception of the garlic mashed potatoes. The majority opinion was that they were a bit sour. Not sure if it was just a bad batch, or a fancy recipe gone bad. We still had a great time and really enjoyed everything else. The staff were very friendly/attentive and kept the drinks flowing!

If you're looking to plan a small party, don't want to spend a million dollars and don't mind the hike to 10th Ave – this place is definitely worth a shot. It's also a nice place to hit up with a group of friends for drinks or dinner. Being that my office isn't too far away, I'll most be back at some point.

  4. One of the very few restaurants in the neighborhood you won't be ashamed to take a date or someone whose opinion matters.

Management and service are definitely attentive. I couldn't pin down its identity: it's Greek, but also nouveau, and they have their own brewery…anyways, it was tasty food in pleasant digs. The feta burger was scrumptious, if a little pricey at $17. I was tempted by the 24-hour octopus…might be worth cracking the bank next time. The truffle fries are really dope.

Beers are good–they're working to have their own, but in the meantime, their selections are great.

  5. Came for a yelp event and was impressed by the selection of hors d'oeuvres. The lamb was delicious and tender, the vegetarian options were great too.

Most of all, I loved the back garden area. Unexpected, secluded spot for the the west side. I recommend for drinks and snacks!

  6. This place is a LOT bigger than it looks!  There's more rooms in the back, as well as some outdoor seating that would be perfect for a warm day!

Anyways, we came during HH, and had their fries (yum!), sausage with yogurt, and pork sliders (4 of 'em).  All were pretty good.  We also had their $6 sangria which hit the spot.  Good times.

The only con would be that the servers kept asking us if we were done with our meal when we clearly weren't, since there was still plenty of food on the table.  Plus, no one was in the restaurant so there was no need to rush us.

  7. food was great. service was friendly. drinks were…meh. not sure if the drink flavors from the house made list was a good combo. we ended sending it back because the smoky wood smell was overwhelming and tasted even worse

  8. I love this place. Not only have they offered to host my engagement party of 13 people for 1000 dollars (a bargain in New York) but they have amazing food, drinks and atmosphere! I actually found this place because of a Yelp event and I'm super grateful. They have a gorgeous courtyard space, a romantic bar and several secluded back areas perfect for any size of group. The steak skewers and the cod fish sliders are amazing and the sangria is boozy but sweet at the same time. It's mulled with cinnamon. I know they're opening a brewery soon and I can't wait to see what's up with that. Definitely come as a date spot. The candlelight really sets the ambiance along with the high seating. The staff is super friendly and I look forward to working with them on this party. The type of people that come here are hip and classy so if you are those things, you'll be in good company!
