I had high expectations for this place due to Yelp. Have been looking to try Ecuadorian food for a while. Who knew this indescript place that I've passed by all the time seemlingly boasts the best in the borough? However, it's SO casual and family-run that they only have full business hours on the weekends, Monday-Friday they only serve lunch. I only came to find this out after going there on a weekday to order dinner, the place looked opened and there was a diner eating and watching TV, but the Owner said that she was closed, only open for lunch- it was 6pm. BTW- she mostly speaks Spanish.
She was very friendly and gave me 2 different menus (they had a computer printed one that have more descriptions of the dishes).
The next day, on a snow day, Friend tried calling to order a lunch. It doesn't seem like she follows the menu- or more that there isn't a differentiation between what is available for lunch and dinner. She ended up telling us what She had that day. It got an Oxtail stew with Rice (meat was tender, but the sauce was a bit dry. Seemed like it was reheated, or has been simmering for too long). Also got a Bollo de Pescado. I think this may be very specific to Ecuador? Friend thought it was a fish ball soup, but we were wrong. It ended up being a GIANT tuna tamale. The tamale part is made of plantain, and I believe peanut? (or that the fish is marinated in a peanut mixture) It was alright, the flavors took a little acclimating to. Very funky and fishy, came with a red onion salad to eat with. From this meal, it seems Ecuadorian food is less flavorful than, say Colombian food, but fairly homey-tasting. There was a definite funkiness to it. It'd like to go back on the weekend, to try things on the full menu and hopefully the quality of the food will be fresher and more pronounced.
PS. She has a colorful assortment of Ecuadorian candies at the end of the meal.
