  1. Vecchia scuola!  Man, you just don't see spots like this anymore.  Reminds me of an Italian grocer I used to go to with my family as a kid.  If these guys were in the 5 boroughs, you wouldn't be able to come near this place.  Luckily, they're in Maplewood and appear to be flying somewhat under the radar still.  Locals obviously know what's up, evidenced by the many people who came and went during my recent visit who appear to be on a first name basis with the proprietors.  It reeks of authenticity, legitimacy and deliciousness.  The store is no frills, what you see is what you get, and you get what you pay for.  Fantastic products, super fresh, high quality and fairly priced.  Plus, they've been in business for over 40 years now!

I haven't had the pleasure of trying their sandwiches, fresh pastas, sausages or mozzarella yet, but I did get a bunch of cured meats, dry sausage, and various antipasti.  Worth noting specifically are their sun-dried red peppers.  Those alone are worth the trip – seriously.  They also offer a modest but impressive selection of packaged pastas, sauces, oils, vinegars, desserts and other Italian specialty items.

The best thing about it, to me, is that they are a family-run small business.  Di Pietro's has a ton of character, lots of credibility and that personal touch that you just don't see much anymore.  Highly recommended.
