Dickson's is actually one of the less crowded vendors within Chelsea Market… so it appears that their delicious sandwiches remain a secret, masked by the fresh meats façade.
FRESH MEATS
Their fresh meats selection focuses on red meats with a much smaller selection for white meats. They have pretty much every cut of beef and lamb available, from tenderloin, strip, bone-in ribeye, chuck, chops, all neatly cut and displayed. They also have whole chickens, chicken thighs and wings, and yes, gizzards, hearts, and some other funky stuff. Butchers are very helpful and friendly. I wasn't getting anything, but they were accommodating with my curiosity.
HOT MENU
We got the Reuben, Spicy Italian, Pastrami, Roast Beef, and the $8.50 beef hotdog. The sandwiches were all around $10, which is probably fairly priced for touristy Chelsea Market. The sandwiches were really good! They gave generous servings of meats, and with that hot pressed bread… I'm drooling again. Definitely some oily sandwiches but boy did they hit the spot. My favorite was the Reuben. Spicy Italian and Pastrami were close seconds. They cut it in half for you so if you're here with someone else, it's a good idea to go halfsies 🙂
Highly recommend coming here as I believe it to be a relatively under-the-radar spot. Read: there's actually space for you to eat on the counter here!
Maybe the butchered meats are what you should get here… We had a pork sandwich and a plain hot dog. Not enough meat to compete with the bread and the meat was unspectacular on both. The pork sandwich with collard greens and cheddar cheese was an ambitious attempt but it really, really didn't work. Pricey for food we didn't like…
Don't be a dick, son.. share your pastrami sandwich. Thrice, I have come to Dickson's Farmstand Meats for their Pastrami Sandwich with sweet apricot chutney and twice it has been sold out. The candied relish pairs perfectly with the smoked beef's salty peppery rub. The Reuben was a sound substitute. Don't ignore their side dishes, the duck fat roasted potatoes and roasted cauliflower. Good food at reasonable prices in the tourist hellhole that is Chelsea Market.
Carnivore heaven! Super high quality, with tastes above and beyond so many other butchers throughout the country. Very clean shop. Great selection of meats, sausages, charcuterie (lamb pastrami, y'all!), bacon (dry-aged bacon, people!!), stocks (including ramen broth!), entrees, sides, drinks, spices, rubs, sauces, et al. Even the option to have things vacuum-sealed for you (at no additional charge).
And the best part: every customer seemed so happy to be there, and you could tell the regulars were faithful hopefuls that their favorite treat would be available.
The ONLY reason I can't give a full 5-stars is service.
As to not be misunderstood, the service is not bad. For NYC, it's perfectly fine. And I came in 1.5 hours before closing, after what I'm sure was a very long day for them all.
Still, I come from Dutch/Amish country. So, while I'm used to high quality and prices to match, I'm used to service that is always smiling, any time of day, which acts as that final seal to make the exorbitant pricing extra worthwhile.
The first Dixon butcher who looked my way just looked and acted annoyed. I was watching her throughout my visit, and she just had a gruff demeanor overall.
So I waited until I got the best of the three available butchers, who was obviously wiped out, but made a grand effort to be patient and accommodating as I pieced my order together. For a full 5-star rating at this price (albeit completely acceptable for the quality!), I personally need the assurance that any butcher assisting me will be at this proper level of service.
Regardless, I'll be back, including any special orders to be requested in advance, to continue giving patronage and word-of-mouth to an awesome 4.5-star NYC business. Great shop, and great hope that multiple return visits will prove this last customer service blip to be a rare happenstance.
Purveyors of meat. Is there any nobler cause? The answer is…yes. However, it's still a pretty noble cause.
I recently came to Chelsea Market with the intention of finding something good that would feed about 3-4 people for dinner, and I saw the large rotisserie chickens and large cha siu pork loins, so I stopped by and took a look around. The place isn't the biggest, and there really isn't any seating except for against the wall with some stools. They have all sorts of different prepared and raw meats, some of which you can't really get at most butcher shops in the city. Quite impressive.
I ended up ordering a lb. of the cha siu pork, a whole rotisserie chicken, a side of roasted carrots, and a side of harissa cauliflower. The cha siu pork was really tender, and the rendered fat really helped with the moisture of the pork. A+ for sure. The rotisserie chicken was pretty good, although per usual, the white meat did come out a little dry, perhaps because there wasn't enough basting? Not quite worth it at $17, although it was a larger chicken than the one you'd get at the grocery store. The harissa cauliflower was delicious, and just the right amount of crisp, even after sitting in the takeout box for more than 10 minutes. Same with the roasted carrots, which was very good. Overall, a very delicious meal.
Service was very quick and helpful, although they did come on a little strong with pushing some of the products. However, it really just seemed like they really felt that enthusiastically about their meats, so you can't really fault them too much for that. The only knock is the price. As it is located in Chelsea Market, there's gotta be some crazy markup for the overhead, and while the value isn't absolutely terrible, the prepared food can get pretty expensive.
I'll be back to try their other pork specials, as well as give their sandwiches a whirl. After hearing good things about their Italian sandwich, I'll have to see what it's all about. Overall, not a bad place for some good prepared and butchered meats.
Amazing butchers! I come here for all of my steaks and good cuts of meat. The butchers here are all really friendly, knowledgable and truly care about their craft. Their quality of meat is amazing and because they are so helpful it is easy to try something new — they will tell you how to prepare it and cook it so it comes out perfectly. They also have an interesting array of condiments for purchase – my favorite is the Japanese mayo which is in a quepie (sp?) doll bottle!! Delicious and hilarious
Gave Dickson's another shot today and tried their Italian sandwich. I definitely recommend eating the sandwiches right away because they cone hot pressed. I liked this sandwich more than the pastrami. It was juicier and actually tasted like a Cuban.
A hot dog. That's all I wanted. A hot dog. And if you're used to those "dirty dogs" found floating like corpses in a stainless steel coffin on the street corners of NY for $2, then your toes will curl up with joy when you take a bite out of a hot dog from Dickson's Farmstand Meats. In essence, these guys know their meats and they do it well. And if you want just the best of the best of a simple food product like a good All American hot dog, come here. The skin of the dog is literally bursting with flavor. How do I know? Because I ate it plain. Just the hot dog and bun. And it was good.
