I was waiting on line for a fish taco next door when I saw ruby red grapefruit italian ice. OMG! It was sooo good. It has real bits of grapefruit and the ice was the perfect blend of sweet and bitter. It was the perfect chaser for large drinks of ocean water after my first surf lesson. A small was $1.50.
5 star ices. Icey girl needs an attitude check! Orange-pinapple ices with pieces of orange rind. Lemony lemon is a tart treat. So good, I had to have two. Too bad icey girl gave some 'tude with those ices,(get your head outta the laptop) cause thoses ices are that damn good! Post Rockaway Taco or apres Rockaway Beach Club these ices do certainly satisfy.
I have not had Italian ice in a while and it seemed like the perfect dessert after eating some delicious tacos next door. I got the Mango and boy was it good. It tasted pretty natural and was extremely refreshing on a hot summer day. I've been craving Italian ice ever since. Nothing seems to compare since I've had this. They need to open one up in my neighborhood.
Also, don't make the mistake that you need to wait in the long line for the ice. Most likely that line is for the tacos. I saw a few poor people realize this way to long after they had been in line. Just excuse yourself through the taco line and they'll be happy to serve you.
Italian ice at the beach might be one thing I just can't live without. Whether it's from the little carts that are being pushed around or an actual stand, I just LOVE italian ice on any hot summer day (or really any day at all). And if I happen to be at the beach and there is no italian ice in sight, my throat slowly dries out and I go into extreme survival mode and desperately search for the fruity cold joys of ice.
Luckily for me, DiCosmo's is about 30 feet away from the water and can satisfy my unquenchable thirst. I had the coconut flavor and while it wasn't the best coconut I've ever had, it was really good and you could tell that there was fresh coconut used in the mix (or they found some really good artificial flavoring that managed to trick me). The regular for $5 is a great deal since you get a lot (maybe too much) and while I didn't have it, the froyo for only $4 is also great value and the people near me eating it looked exceptionally happy. Yum, I'll definitely be back!
i've never tried this place even though it's right next door to rockaway taco. the last time i was at the beach, i was on the most dreadful line possible.. and decided to try out the frozen banana, because why not? OMG. IT WAS AMAZING. Covered in oreo bits and chocolate and what is this melting in my mouth?!
i eventually made it through to rocakway and actually ordered less food, so i could plot my return back to dicosmo for their coconut ice. HOLY goodness.
so do treat yoself as you wait on the line that never ends. or, make it your destination (which i will do next time).
I am one of those patrons that's happily willing to stand in line for an hour once or twice a summer for some of that sweet, sweet Rockaway Taco lovin'. Whether they are hospitable with their free samples to those in line, or scooping out a variety of fresh and fruit-laden ices to those on the brink of passing out, I think most of us that are Rockaway Taco Line Survivors owe a great debt to the fine folks at DiCosmo's. I've sampled their simple yet refreshing lemon and coconut ices innumerable times, but this past Memorial Day weekend, the beau was kind enough to step down the line and come back to me with a full serving of pineapple ice. Mixed with real chunks of pineapple (obviously far removed from a can of Dole), the flavors and textures melded in my mouth that made those final 20 minutes in line tolerable.
Dare I say…it's good enough to go to APART from standing in line for tacos? *GASP* What a concept. (Ha!) In all seriousness, whether you are waiting for other foods to purchase or looking for a nice refresher on a hot summer day, the fine and friendly folks at DiCosmo's will hook you up with a quintessential summer treat in no time flat.
delicious ices at the beach, can't go wrong with all the cool flavors.
Wow, some of the best italian ice I've had. I had the mango flavored Italian ice… and boy it was so rich in flavor. I could taste the pieces of mango in it. Perfect for a hot summer day!
