  1. Small basement restaurant in the East Village. Very cozy atmosphere, candle-lit room, slightly open kitchen, and delicious flavor combinations. Came here on a Saturday night for a friend's birthday dinner. We ordered the following:

    For appetizers to share.
    – Scallop Crudo – one of the specials of the night, best app of the night, scallops were fresh and the crudo was very well-balanced
    – Zuke Tuna Salad – truffled soy dressing $12 – very flavor-forward – the dressing makes this dish
    – Fluke Sashimi – yuzu pepper & ceviche sauce $12 – this was good but after the scallop crudo, a little underwhelming, but I think overall still very delicious
    – Potato Gratin – marinated sea urchin $10 – I think this was a misleading dish name; when I think of potato gratin, I think of buttery scalloped potatoes in a shallow dish/pan that's been baked until the top has a nice crust. This was not it. This was red potatoes cut in half and then roasted/broiled in butter and topped with a piece of uni (came in 4 small pieces). I don't think it was anything spectacular, but yes, still good.

For my entree, I ordered the 'Fettucine' (creamy sea urchin sauce and calamari $24). The dish was nice and creamy, but definitely under-seasoned. I don't eat salty, so the fact that I'm saying it's lacking salt, means that it was veryyyy under-seasoned. But the flavors were there. I still enjoyed it. I also tried the Miso Black Cod – I thought it was very delicious. Some of the other entrees that were ordered were the Lamb Chops, Duck Breast, and Spicy Lamb Bolognese Ramen. Everybody at the table enjoyed their entrees.

For dessert, we ordered the Earl Grey Creme Brûlée to share. You really taste the tea flavor in the creme brûlée and it went well with the accompanying vanilla ice cream.

Overall, happy with the restaurant. Will come back to try the gnocchi.

  2. So. Tasty.
I love trying fusion restaurants and my boyfriend aptly picked this one because I love Italian food and he loves Japanese. So, why compromise when there's a place like dieci?

Everyone who goes MUST try the miso black cod. Just do it. You won't regret it. They cook it so well – the texture, the flavor are perfection. I almost shrieked when I had the first bite.

The place is tiny, however, so just be prepared for that. There aren't many tables and it is dark inside   I would recommend making reservations.

  3. If you love pasta and if you just so happen to love uni as well, you're looking at the right place!
THEIR UNI PASTA WAS SO DELICIOUS!! It was definitely the highlight of my meal.
Not only was the uni fresh, the fettuccine was surprisingly fresh as well! It's not usual to come across freshly made pasta in most $$$ restaurants. My only complain (if it's any complain) was the portion size — I WANT MORE UNI PASTA!

Anyhow, besides the heavenly entree, my friend and I shared the Scallop Crudo. The appetizer was an interesting concept with the extraordinary choice of ingredients but if you're not into the taste of the ocean, I would suggest skipping this.
We also shared the Earl Grey Creme Brûlée with Vanilla Ice Cream. It did not disappoint.

    Definitely coming back again.

  4. We just came out from dinner at another restaurant nearby and did not order dessert.  But I went closer to the menu posted outside and saw foie gras.  Then my friend pointed out what she thought was soufflé at one of the tables we peeked at.  We then went in just to have dessert.

It turned out it wasn't soufflé- but they were kind enough to accommodate us for a quick bite.

When we found out it was not a soufflé, I switched to order the chawarmushi foie gras.  This is definitely a super scrumptious pot of foie gras with intense flavor and yet light like a mousse.  We raved about it and surely, while there, we booked to go back soon.  We would like to try the rest of the food the others were eating.

This restaurant is a Japanese fusion with Italian.  I think we are eyeing in the pasta bowl with lamb!  It looked good.

That's what's nice when restaurants accommodate you – they just found some fans!

    TWO DAYS LATER – Tonight:
    We are back.
Brussel sprouts were so good – you won't think you're eating veggies.

The vongole – clams with light sauce is a must try.

I had the Uni pasta – I finished it – yummy
Generous amount of lamb chops with great sauce

And for dessert – strawberries on what taste like very well done sabayon with crispy toasted almonds and balsamic vinegar. Perfect ending without too much sugar.

  5. First time here.  Location was small and a bit hard to find because it kinda blended in with the building and it was a few steps underneath everything.  But the food was FANTASTIC and FLAVORFUL!  Omg all I have to say is that even though the dishes were small we were full in the end.  We ordered 2 bottles of sake and each had our own entrees with appetizers and dessert and the bill came out we were surprised that it wasn't that outrageous.  I had ordered the miso cod entree and the cod was so soft and smooth it was unbelievably wonderful.

  6. What a swanky joint! Oh the treasures you find when prancing around with your out-of-town colleague and needing a place to refuel fast! My colleague actually pulled up this place on his Google maps and since we were both pretty hungry, we decided on this place with haste but not with any regret.

I was a bit confused by the name "Dieci" and thought this has to be an Italian place right? Well sort of. This place serves up Japanese cuisine but with a hint of Italian everywhere and it worked quite well.

Here are the dishes we tried:

Fluke Sashimi ($12) – This is with yuzu and ceviche sauce. Exceptionally flavorful, light and delightful. I highly recommend this dish.

Potato Gratin ($10) – Marinated sea urchin. It felt very decadent, buttery and melts in your mouth. Highly recommend this.

Black Tagliolini ($16) – Squid ink, tomato and calamari. Excellent dish and calamari so soft and fresh.

We also had a few appetizers off the seasonal menu, but I can't seem to conjure up the names of the dishes, but what I can remember is that all the seafood was FRESH and DELICIOUS. Dieci knows how to do seafood and they know how to do it well.

Highly highly recommend this place. I would also suggest that you make a reservation as this place is immensely popular. We lucked out on getting a table on a whim because it was close to 9:30pm and most people were already finishing up their meals.

Would definitely come back here to impress that special someone. Amazing spot to enjoy high quality food, excellent sake and the best of all, lovely company!

  7. Italian meets Japanese…GENIUS!! This could have gone wrong in so many ways but the chefs at Dieci have mastered flavor profiles from both cuisine and married them very well.

We started with Fluke Sashimi yuzu pepper & ceviche sauce.  Light, fresh and spicy.  Just the combination to start the dinner with.

For our second bite we had the Uni Scrambled Egg sturgeon caviar….ummmm…pause for a moment as I reminisce over how unbelievably amazing this dish was.  In the most perfectly planned vessel this warm scrambled egg sat under a fresh bite of uni.  Topped with sturgeon caviar the flavor of savory and creamy richness warms you inside out.

Our third bite was a special of the night octopus.  Tender and juicy grilled Octopus with tomato miso sauce. The flavor profile gave you hints of sweet tang from the tomato and salty from the miso.  It was executed perfectly to prevent an over cooked texture.

For our last savory dish of the night we had the Miso Black Cod truffled mushroom risotto and poached egg.  The miso flavor actually paired well with the light hint of truffle in the mushroom risotto.  Creamy and cooked to a slight aldente texture the risotto was done great.  The cod was flakey and seasoned well.

To end the night we had the Molten Chocolate Cake with bourbon ice cream.  This was the best close out to an amazing first dinner with my bf in NYC.  The bourbon ice cream packed a punch and went superbly with the molten rich chocolate cake.

Overall, the dinner was phenomenal and the service was a shining star.  Our waiter was charming and chatty.  With great recommendations and a hospitable demeanor we definitely enjoyed the night.

  8. very intimate dining experience with really great food. i ordered the beef tartare and sea bass and both were top notch. this is a good place to bring friends who are visiting from out of town. it's a small space, so i wouldn't recommend for huge parties.
