Solid Italian food. This is my go-to no frills take out Italian place. They're always super quick making the food and it's delicious!
I usually get the spaghetti bolognese- a generous helping of spaghetti and meat sauce. I also love the chicken parmigiana, which comes with a side of salad and penne pasta! Cooked well and hearty.
Surprisingly nice spot in an otherwise drab part of town. Went with a colleague for lunch and we both did the 3-course prix-fixe for $20. I had leek soup, chicken Francese and flourless chocolate cake, while my colleague had a Caesar salad, sole Francese, and tiramisu.
Everything was delicious, the service was attentive, and paced well. Mellow but tasteful atmosphere. Good value and a nice choice in the neighborhood. Would definitely return.
This place is cute. I agree with Joe L. This place has a mellow and tasteful atmosphere. An Italian place that wasn't a bunch of hustling waitors and loud diners. The service and house staff was outstanding. Friendly, attentive, and I never had an empty glass of water (one of my favorite qualities in a server). A decent wine list and appetizing menu. The house dressing on the salad was my favorite part of this meal in addition to the vegetables that came with our meals.
The chicken marsala didn't stand a chance against my boyfriend and he wiped his plate clean complimenting the dish the entire time. I ordered the eggplant parmagiana and I was dissapointed. The flavoring was there, the cheese was gooey, and the sauce wasn't too acidic… but the eggplant, was undercooked, chewey and uncuttable. It made me sad. and the pasta, tasted a little too al dente. I would've rather waited another 5 minutes for a better eggplant.
I'm not sure that this would keep me from going back… because it wasn't crowded, fairly priced, and the service was still top notch. but there are a lot of italian places with the whole package as well… We'll see I suppose
This place is pretty good. We've ordered delivery a few times. I like the homemade pastas.
Last night, we dined in for the first time. A couple of things bothered me. Lots of people have commented on how great the bread is. We didn't have that experience. We even saw one employee come back from the store with baguettes.
One of their wines, Il Bastardo @ $28 per bottle, can be bought at the store for $6 or $7. The risotto was too dry, lacking in creaminess.
The decor is a bit off. The walls are painted white, even the exposed brick wall. Very few pictures and mirrors hang on the wall. The bare walls lead to the dining room being loud. Everyone's voice bouncing off the walls.
* 2.5 stars *
My dad brought me to dinner here. It wouldn't have been my choice, but we had a nice time. He was impressed the bartender got his drink right.
We were NOT impressed, however, with the grilled calamari. It was tough and dry. Flavor may have been nice if it didn't taste like day-old food reheated. The portabello mushrooms were great, and the baked clams were alright.
Dad got the veal tartuffate which I had been eyeing. Glad he got it, and glad I didn't. It was so good but the truffle oil is soooo rich. I couldn't have eaten more than a few bites.
I got the chicken scarpariello which is an unusual order for me. I rarely ever order chicken. The menu described chicken with sausage and garlic and white wine sauce. However, there was tomatoes and red sauce in my order. I assume this was normal, but this isn't what I thought I was ordering. My meal was okay.
The side of pasta we ordered with garlic and oil was good. We were too full for dessert but did have some limoncello. I love when places serve limoncello.
Service was good.
Came here on a Saturday for dinner. The candles and dim-lighting make it a perfect date night spot. The restaurant was not too busy so we could actually hear each other talking and had nice conversation. The servers are attentive and were very good about refilling out waters and checking on us. We started with a mixed green salad and shared it. The dressing was light and refreshing. I ordered the gnocchi in pesto and although I did like my dish, if I went back I would probably get something else. My date ordered the mushroom ravioli which I thought was very good, however he liked my gnocchi more. We ended dinner with an espresso each and shared tiramisu. Over all we enjoyed our 3 course meal and would definitely go back if we had the chance.
Dolcino is perfect for a night where you want to stay local and have a low-key dinner. This place is not a scene, and I've never seen it with more than 3 tables occupied when I've walked by. Personally, I don't like eating in empty or almost empty restaurants but I will say the food was delicious, and for a good price too. Since we were one of the few customers, the service was really good and our server was extremely attentive. If you live in the Kips Bay or Murray Hill area, it's worth visiting Dolcino for a nice, Sunday Italian dinner.
Today I was possessed by the urge to wander off and pick a random place to eat. It wasn't hard, since I only just started working in the area.
Dolcino is cute, a bit out of the way, and dead quiet on a Saturday afternoon. I like to think the service was so good because that's just how they are, but it may also have been that I was just nearly the only one there to pay attention to.
Bread was room temp, but at least fresh cut. Little irks me more than one slice being all hard on one side. More importantly, the spaghetti bolognese. I was a bit surprised that it didn't come with soup or salad, but I didn't miss them. The portion was good, the sauce was meaty and flavorful, and the spaghetti was al dente without my even having to ask. I could hardly ask for more!
But I did, and that's where we lost a star. Their flourless chocolate cake fell sadly flat – it had little chocolate taste to it, and a strange, gel-like texture on the bottom that tasted burnt.
So go for the service, go for the style, go for the spaghetti bolognese. But don't go for the cake.
