I've jogged by Don Alex several times, and having tried the chicken at other local restaurants I've wanted to do a comparison for a while now. One lazy Sunday, my girlfriend and I finally got the chance thanks to us not wanting to cook and wanting to go for a nice evening walk.
The restaurant is located on the corner where Elmora and Rahway meet, but I noticed right next to it an annex has been added on. We went into the main restaurant on the corner to order our to go bag of chicken with salad and beans. It is really supposed to come with fries, but the were more than happy tu sub a side in the same price range.
The interior is very basic, but very clean as well. I also dug the faux stone wall that separates the seating area from the kitchen in the back. A large LCD television played Telemundo as we waited on one of the two dozen or so seats inside the place. The staff was quite pleasant and it was a nice wait as we checked out the menu and decor.
When we brought the food home, it was cool to find the chicken was big and *juicy*! I mean, there was no dryness here at all, even the breast meat. The seasoning wsa focused on the skin but did not soak into the meat as deep as say, Pio Pio but you can't expect that from everyone. The green sauce that came with it was super tasty. It wasn't quite the addictive experience that is Pio Pio's sauce, but it comes *very* close!
The salad had some avacado with it, but it wasn't anything spectacular. Just basic lettuce, tomato etc. but their dressing was tangy and tasty. The kidney beans were tasty, but definitely needed some salt.
The amount of food given was excellent. For about $14.50 we easily had enough food to feed about three to four people. While not spectacular the food was well done, tasty and satisfying.
A lot of items on the menu intrigued us so next time I'm hoping to eat inside the restaurant to experience their other dishes!
