  1. When you walk into this restaurant, you won't think you're still in Jamaica.  Great new addition to the area serving up some fresh Mexican food.

Ordered the beef tacos (comes with two per order) $7.  Tacos were pretty big and stuffed with chunks of meat.  You need ask for the green (medium) and red sauce (super spicy).  The beef needs a bit more seasoning and flavor, but if you add the sauce in, it will give it the kick it needs.

They take credit if you're short on cash. There is plenty of seating, if you plan to stay they will yell your name and bring your order to where you are sitting.

Saw someone order the burittos and they looked really big and tasty.

  2. Wandered into this place on Saturday while taking a break from the Jamaica Market nearby with two friends. First thing I noticed was that the decor was cool, a little retro but it was 5pm on a Saturday night and the place was empty. Only a couple was cuddling buy the bar. I ordered the pork tamales which were made fresh while my friends had a chicken burrito and a pineapple and beet juice. The tamales looked and tasted good but they were very spicy. It came two on a plate and I was stuffed after eating one and 3/4 of the second one.  Overall the portions are good, pricing is fair but based on their location, they're not seeing much foot traffic which is unfortunate. I would go back to try other menu options.

  3. After my fellow Yelp Elites boasted heavily about this new mexican cafe, I had to make it my stop for lunch break. It's located within feet from my office building.

This cafe has a interesting californian surf theme. Surf boards on the wall and bright florescent colors. Not authentic mexican style. I reviewed the menu that features fresh juice, tortas, tacos and salads. I decided on the Fish Tacos. The tacos are served with Tilapia, guacamole,  slaw and lime. The food was very fresh, however, it wasn't exceptional. Tilapia was meaty but not exceptionally tasty. Salt and pepper seasoning if they even used any. Even the Green sauce couldn't revive this place ' s lackluster taste and menu. How do you mess up GREEN SAUCE???? OR chicken fajitas??? HOW???!

I will say that this is a healthier alternative to the other options in the neighborhood.  Definitely a break from the caribean retaurants.

  4. So i went to Don Nico's again and i was correct in eating there instead of taking it to go.  I ordered the tamales again and was given one correct one and a pork one.  When i told the young lady behind the counter she asked the cook about it and he was the absolute worst person i've ever encountered in a restaurant setting.  He argued with me, he raised his voice and denied that they even sold pork tamales.  The young lady behind the counter was mortified at the way I was treated and apologized on the restaurant's behalf.  The cook needs to get fired, no one should be berated that way especially since I asked nicely.   If you decide to go, get the mac n cheese but don't ever get the tamales, they'll screw your order up.  How difficult would it be to put them in separate pots, i mean seriously.  So incredibly disappointed and sad.

  5. So excited this place came to the neighborhood. There are not a lot of good food options in this area, so when I heard about Don Nico's, I rushed over. The inside is spacious, nice decor, and very clean. Their menu is on a chalkboard and they have everything from fresh juice to tacos to mac n cheese. The staff is friendly and greeted me right away. Everything other people ordered looked delicious including the nachos. I had the steak tacos, and they were very juicy. The sauce and guac were good, but the meat itself needed a little more flavor. They cook the food on the grill on the spot so it takes a little time. I came here during lunch, so by the time I walked here and ordered my lunch break was almost over. However, it was worth it to get some decent grub in the neighborhood. This place is A-Ok. Looking forward to trying other things on the menu. Welcome to the neighborhood Don Nico's!

  6. I like the look of Don Nicos. They give off an island/beach vibe with colored walls, chairs and surfboard decor but also rustic with wood accents, two communal tables and mason jar lighting. The Mexican aspect is seen in the reiterated Coca-cola decor that includes a life size one, a Coca-cola machine and Coca-cola salt and pepper shakers etc etc etc.

I decided to go with their shrimp tacos which came with poblano peppers, onions, tomatillo sauce minus the Oaxaca cheese. The two tacos I received were only okay. The taco shells were fresh and piping hot but the shrimp itself was not seasoned, like at all! They had grill marks but absolutely no flavor and everything else in the taco kind of just meshed into the background. I did get some heat from the peppers but that was it.

Service was biased. The woman that took my order was plesant and smiling but made me as well as another young lady come up to the register to get our "To Stay" orders. I didn't mind until I saw two other patrons (of other races btw)come in and order "To Stay" items and they were delivered right to their table with a huge smile.

It is a nice looking spot compared to the other options along Jamaica ave and they do have beer and wine. I can see people coming here for HH after work but other than that I'm not interested in coming back to try other items.
