Dong Hae Susan is a Korean style restaurant of Japanese sushi/sashimi. It's by far one of the best Korean restaurants for sashimi in and around Bergen County. The restaurant itself is not much to look at from the outside or inside, but the sashimi here is phenomenal. The portions are highly generous, and they serve quite rare, expensive sashimi that are all fresh. Whenever I have generous platters of sashimi at other Korean restaurants, they serve larger portions of the fish no one cares for or is inexpensive. Dong Hae Susan is quite different. They have a variety of raw fish such as sea urchin, abalone, sea cucumber, etc. that you cannot get fresh at such a good price. One piece of abalone, for instance, would easily cost $20 at many other restaurants. If you get a sashimi combo, it basically comes with a huge platter of sashimi, a variety of bonchon (side dishes), and a casserole with rice at the end. The food is top-notch and presentation is great here. The waiters are friendly and attentive. You certainly cannot compare the prices of the fish here to many other restaurants. If you love Korean food and seafood, Dong Hae Susan is definitely a place to try out.
I feel like this place has been around since I was a little kid….which was a really long time ago. I remember tagging along with my parents and their friends whenever they had reunions with their friends and they would have a feast filled with lots of whole fish and soju. They seemed to enjoy themselves but I never went on my own until my friend told me about their ridiculous lunch special. Being a sucker for great lunch specials, I had to check it out and it did not disappoint.
When you walk into the place, it seems like you're walking into a shady underground dungeon. It wasn't well lit and the decor and furniture looked like it hadn't been changed since I was a little kid. If they add some strobe lights, it could be easily converted into a seedy nightclub. But on to the actual food.
For $12, you get sushi and sashimi assortment plus vegetable tempura (fried perfectly), small grilled mackerel, and a choice between udon or spicy fish soup. The food was all very solid.
Actually what impressed me most about the meal were the plates and silverware they used. They brought out the sashimi on this really fancy rock. The sushi came out on a clean wooden board. The bowls and utensils were nice as well.
I haven't eaten here for dinner but I imagine if you were willing to drop some cash, you could have a pretty righteous feast here.
Overall, this isn't a place you want to bring a date to, but if you're craving fresh fish with some fellow friends, it wouldn't hurt to check this place out for reasonably priced lunch special.
Everytime I come here, I get the "teuk jungshik" which is a combo of sushi, sashimi, and a roll that comes with an additional soup or udon dish, tempura, and egg roe rice. This is one of the best deals I've seen in a korean Japanese restaurant. They give you a surplus of side dishes and foods that come with your combo. If you are a person who loves trying a variety of foods in one sitting, this is the place to be!
Ever since this place has come under new management, it's been soooo good. Their lunch specials are unbeatable. They do jjigae and sushi combinations for extremely reasonable prices and the portions will leave you satisfied. This place has become one of my regular rotations for family dinners in pal park. I always get the al jjigae, it's my favorite! The hwae dup bap is amazing as well.
I am a huge sushi fan, and I am giving 5 stars just for their amazing lunch special. Most lunch specials are during the week but DHSS's is on Saturday's and Sunday's. Their lunch special menu is extensive, but one item for $11.99 you get rolls, sushi, sashimi, soup, salad, and fried tempura. you also get banchan (side dishes) galore. And its not crap quality but their fresh stuff. umm what more can you want? Yes the entrance looks shady but once you get past that you will discover your new favorite place to eat on the weekends. i literally have been telling everyone about it.
Other than their lunch special, DHSS is one of those sushi places where you can order those huge boats filled with all just sushi. I took my family out to dinner here once and it was great because they can accommodate big groups.
Decent lunch selection here, as well as many other korean restaurants in this area. This place has lunch special until 4pm (apparently the sign outside needs to be updated). The service was pretty slow even though it wasn't crowded. We had to wait for the waiter to notice us and wait again until he ruffled through his notepad for him to take our order. He looked pretty young, maybe it was his first day. The hwedupbap was decent, nothing to write home about, but for $10 with all the complimentary sides, no complaints on the food.
Came in for a lunch special over the weekend was thoroughly impressed. The amount of food and the quality of the ingredients is great. 6 pieces of hwae, 5 pieces of nigiri, about 5 or 6 pieces of tempura, and your choice of udon or maewoontang for $12. Can't argue with that. Much better than the lunch specials at any of the seafood places in Queens area.
Service is good and the restaurant has a bunch of little private rooms for your party if you want a more intimate setting.
There are so many options for great Korean-Japanese food in the Fort Lee/Palisades Park area, but I love this restaurant in particular for their unique lunch specials. Yes, it can be a little pricey ($10-12 per person?), but you get SO much food in return.
I'm a big fan of their al bap, which is white rice topped with katsuobushi, tobiko in varying colors (orange, black, green – very pretty!) and nori. It sounds kind of strange, but it tastes amazing. It's actually part of a lunch special combo with dwenjang jjigae, which comes out bubbling hot.
Their ban chan is great too – they give you a whole grilled mackerel as well as egg jjim (steamed egg with scallions on top), which is one of my favorites.
