Hi favorite new bar!!! I love this place, the food is tasty, the owners are wonderful and Tom is awesome! 🙂 It always feels like home in here and everyone REALLY does know your name.
Other than new air conditioner units, little has changed physically in this steak house/bar since it opened in 1950. The same can be said about the menu and cocktail list. This is one of the few existing UES eateries from the mid-20th Century. The food is unexceptional but reliable. The crowd is not glitzy or hipster. The crowd is mainly regulars who have been around for a while. If it were up to me, if Donohue's ever closes, it should be moved to the Smithsonian as an example of a typical NYC post war restaurant.
Decor and service are lovely. Staff are pleasant and attentive. The ambience transports you back a few decades with its comfortable black booth seats and red tablecloths. They have a metal pole with hooks at each booth for your coats and jackets, which was very handy.
Unfortunately, the food is lacking. Steak was tough to chew and very fatty. The mash potato and spinach side dishes that came with the steak were bland and required a few shakes of the salt container. The burger with cheddar cheese and French fries was dry despite being medium and pink in the middle. I think the buns were the Wonder Bread buns sold in supermarkets and popular in the 90s… very thin and dry.
Only the French onion soup was good. They don't overload it with salt, which other places tend to do (or maybe the original recipe calls for very salty soup?).
I loved this place and can't believe I have not been here before. Classic beyond classic NYC, had a great burger and fries…two orders of fries, a bloody mary and a dirty martini with gin of course. Great bar tender and a load of charecters were there, this place is a must.
It is exactly what you would expect. Not fancy steak or dishes. Very basic. Reasonably priced. The clientele is very mature. Perhaps people who are going there for their regular meals. We heard a lot of "See you tomorrow". There has to be many regulars.
Do not expect this to be a Peter Lugers steak place or anything similar. It is a basic steak house. We ate and drank for three people for under $180.
Stopped in here for a quick meal after walking around the city with friends and fellow photographers. Food was good, nothing unique, but good solid meals. Service was excellent with a pleasant wait staff.
Overall, nothing negative. It's a very comfortable restaurant with good food!
