Opened on November 17th, 2015. The line splits off so the check out is faster than one would expect.
-The orange sauce in tangy and sweet. Definitely its signature sauce. I ordered braised pork which was bland without the sauce.
-Guacamole for $1 is a steal.
-The corn kernels are harder and less sweet than Chipotle's.
I'm indifferent between Chipotle and Dos Toros. I like Fields Good Chicken next door over both.
I love Dos Toros. It is arguably better than Chipotle, I favor Dos Toros over Chipotle. Unfortunately this store did not live up to my expectation and to the Dos Toros brand. My burrito was not properly rolled as it came apart in shambles and very messy to eat as the employees had trouble rolling the burrito. I don't know if it was because the server was a newly hired person rolling a burrito for the first time or they didn't get the proper training. It's too bad this was what I had to experience at this location.
As strange as it may sound, I think this is the best taco spot in the Financial District. Probably cause there are so few options in the neighborhood.
Like the other Dos Toros locations in the city, these are very good tacos, but not necessarily the best. Although I do love that they melt a slice of cheese on the tortilla of every taco.
And I do think for some strange reason, this location and the location near Union Square have better quality than the other locations, in my opinion.
I think the thing that stands out here the most is the Carnitas (Pork), whether you get it in a taco, a rice bowl, or a salad. The Carne Asada & Chicken are good, but nothing to write home about.
But for the price, convenience and quality, I think this is a great choice if you're looking for something quick, tasty and inexpensive.
Other places to compare would be Tres Carnes (I give it 3-stars, except for the brisket tacos which are 4-star) and Los Tacos No 1 in Chelsea Market (I give it 5-stars).
And as far as El Luchador down the block, I actually prefer Dos Toros as it's cheaper and slightly better quality, in my opinion. And, I like that Dos Toros doesn't pretend to be an "Authentic Mexican" place (like El Luchador does), but rather a higher quality Chipotle. They own who they are and I give them credit for that.
Definitely worth $12 for a steak burrito with guacamole, considering how gigantic AND delicious it was. The beans are good, the rice is good, the salsas are great, the cheese is good, and the steak is GREAT. I wish they offered cilantro & cotija cheese for more Mexican flavor, but it's still pretty damn satisfying, and way better than Shi-potlé (located directly across the street)… Also, they sell cans of Tecate for $3??!??!
They are taking authentic Mexican food chain store to the next level. Great atmosphere, cool modern decoration with Mexican elements. I can also feel that the staff is very proud of the brand. Very good quality of meat, sauce, veggies and brilliantly added piece of cheese – my perfect Saturday late noon bite burrito. Honestly, for same price, I'll def go to Dos Toros Taqueria
While I like the food and frequent this establishment more than Chiptole (conveniently across the street), I must confess – Chiptole has managed their food operations more efficiently than Dos Toros before the food issues. The staff are not well trained to handle the traffic. In addition, they need to hire more staff to scale their businesses. The staff are super friendly and nice.
A few things –
Pros:
– The rice is less oily than Chiptole's.
– The chicken are cutted into smaller pieces
– They have better cheese
– The chips are better
– I also like the chips crumbs on top of bowl or burrito
Cons:
– Slower service, less staff doing each task
– Not well-prepared, have to wait for meat or rice (someone should notice this in advance and prep to avoid wait time)
– Smaller portions of guac
– Smaller meat portions
Since Chiptole has fixes their food issues, I've started to frequent this place less.
Personally I like Dos Toros over the other popular national chain burrito place. I like the meat better at Dos Toros. I also think the food at the chain burrito place way too salty. I like the seasoning at Dos Toros better. It's definitely not as salty at Dos Toros. It's an assembly line for your meal. You start at one end of the line and as your burrito moves down the line, it gets more fillings. I opted for a mix of the pork and steak burrito with guacamole. I told them no dairy so I didn't get any cheese with my burrito. I am just not into cheese on rice and besides, I'm lactose intolerant.
If you are okay with cheese, not only do they melt cheese into your tortilla, they also put more cheese in at the end of the assembly line if you want more…looking at the bin of cheese made me cringe! That is a lot of cheese.
I love how big the burrito is at Dos Toros. I usually save half of it for the next day or share my burrito with my BF but I have seen people eat the whole thing, dang! I know I do not eat it properly, you're supposed to peel the aluminum foil on one end and hold the burrito while eating it from one end to the other. Sorry Dos Toros, I like eat my burritos with a knife and fork, I like dissecting it! Then again I eat burgers with knife and fork and potato chips with chopsticks, doesn't everyone?!
Try Dos Toros, it's pretty yummy! I would come back…actually, I have. I have tried it at the West Village and Union Square location already.
My burrito was delicious. I guess that's all I need to write….
Joking. I'm a Yelp Elite…..
The atmosphere was so enlightening, the staff was pleasant, and the people standing in line were actually pretty nice and happy! The crowd was raving about the food when they walked out. I approach the lines (2 different assembly lines); I loved the energy. I walked up to the lady greeting in the front and she was clearly the manager. We were just chatting away about YELP not having a check in for me, so I created one. I didn't know how to do it, but I "think" I made it happen. I wanted to check in really bad. I waited about 35 mins in line for my 1.00 burrito (YES my friends they were giving away other things for a dollar…tacos, burritos, quesadillas). They were really prepared for the grand opening which was perfect. I know they have many locations, but I've only been to the Union Square one recently and had the same AMAZING service. Overall I'm a happy camper. Enjoy. Happy Taco Tuesday you all…
