  1. When you at Dosateria, you are on display.

You eat in the middle of a supermarket, forming a ring around the area where they prepare the South Indian meals.

I assume a prominent location is meant to drive more shoppers to put down their baskets and dine in the middle of the store. The store designers should hope that the potential diners don't see the grimaces once the food is served.

I love that we live in an age where regional Indian food is not available, but is available inside a major supermarket. Unfortunately, Whole Foods has managed to neuter the taste in bringing this to the bourgeoisie masses.

I ordered an uttapam, the thick pancake formed by a batter of dal and rice and topped with spice.  The pre-selected set of toppings included cheese, avocado and a chutney sauce for dipping. It is a thick calorie bomb, with crispy edges.

    It tasted like nothing.

Despite being advertised as one of their spicy offerings, this was just carbohydrates stacked on top of other carbohydrates. Nothing really stood out.

Other reviews here point to some better experiences with the dosas on offer, but I can't say this inspired much confidence.

  2. OBSCENE!!!

I got avocado, scrambled eggs, extra sharp cheddar, on top of butter chicken and basmati rice, topped with raita and cilantro mint chutney. After I ordered and shelled out 13$ for this meal, then I looked at the yelp reviews. I was worried that I made a mistake. But then they gave me my meal, which was actually generously sized. I took a bite. Absolutely delicious. Perfectly ripe avocado, flavorful cheese, perfectly cooked eggs, the chicken was delicious too, the sauces were the perfect complement. Avocado, scrambled eggs, and cheese are among my favorite foods, and the pairing with the Indian food…I loved it.

It's not 5 stars because it was 13$ which seems a little high. I will definitely eat this again though.

  3. After a few weeks of walking by the Dosateria counter in my favorite Whole foods store, I decided to give it a try.  I'm really glad i did….This dosa was so good.  I tried the Bollywood chicken meatball dosa, it had avocados and came with a dipping avocado chutney sauce.  I love the twist they've added to a dosa meal, typical Dosa's are pretty boring to me but I really enjoyed this one.  I did'nt like the Lassis here so you're better off saving your money.  It's so hard to get a good lassi outside of India.  The price is a bit steep at $11, So I wouldn't come here for lunch too often but I would definitely come back.  It's the best Dosa I've ever had.
