I recently tried Dough Doughnuts in City Kitchen in Row NYC during a long-weekend trip to Manhattan. My cousin and I were looking for a quick breakfast before catching a taxi to the airport, and this place fit the bill perfectly. City Kitchen is great, because it's a cute little restaurant hub that offers numerous quick options, so I definitely recommend it for any meal of the day if you're looking for a quick/reasonably priced spot to grab a bite.
Dough Doughnuts was shining like a beacon of light as soon as we entered City Kitchen. The glass display case of beautiful doughnuts was calling to me. I made my way over and immediately realized I would be faced with a couple of very tough decisions that morning.. How many doughnuts could I reasonably eat; and, which ones would I choose from the absolutely delectable-looking 10+ options they had on display.
I decided I could only actually eat two doughnuts (I know, I know.. it's a shame!) so I opted for the Cinnamon Sugar and the Nutella. Let me tell ya, I didn't choose unwisely. The cinnamon Sugar doughnut was very good, with a nice chewy consistency. But, the Nutella doughnut was heaven. Perfectly cooked and filled with Nutella. The dough/filling ratio was perfection. Every single bite was perfect.
My cousin also opted for the Cinnamon Sugar and the Passion Fruit with Cocoa Nibs. I tried one bite of the Passion Fruit, and while it was interesting, and objectively good, it wasn't for me. I don't want my doughnuts fruity. I want them sugary, sticky, chocolatey, and oozing delicious fillings.. the way the doughnut gods intended!
Dough boasts numerous other doughnuts that I didn't have the opportunity to try, but I hope to make it back one of these days, and when I do I plan to get a half dozen in order to try some more. They also have a nice menu of hot/coffee drinks, but I wasn't in the market for those during my visit either, so unfortunately I can't offer any feedback for now.
I definitely recommend checking out one of the Dough locations if you're in Manhattan. And my one major piece of advice.. If you go to Dough, get the Nutella!
Great little outpost of the bakery with the same name near Union Square. This is really more of a counter in the city kitchen food court at Row NYC.
They get their donuts from the downtown bakery so selection may vary. The donuts are all great! Larger than the average donut and gooey sweet and full of flavor. We tried the salted caramel dark chocolate that was decadent and rich, and the nutella stuffed donut that was oozing with delicious nutella sauce. Both were amazing!
Call ahead if you're looking for something specific, or just walk in and get whatever looks good.
Gigantic donuts, though for 4 people. Nice people, seating all through the city Kitchen area. Nice people. Lots of people since it is a hipster fancy type food court.
This place is tucked in to that food court on the 2nd floor. You won't see a sign for it on the streets, so just be sure to follow the signs for the Kitchen!
For a food court, it was pretty nice. A bit small, but very well lit, some nice window seating, and nice interior design.
Service was pretty subpar. I don't particularly care that it's "just" a food court. The food industry still falls under the customer service realm after all. I asked for a hibiscus donut, which apparently was actually a blood orange donut. All she had to say was, "Oh that's actually a blood orange donut, we don't have anymore hibiscus." Instead, she was pretty sassy in letting me know, and then I asked if they had hibiscus (not all of them were labeled, and this was my first time visiting. how would I know? noob status =P), and she goes, "Do you see it out there? If it's not there, then we don't have it." How dismissive O.o Thankfully, the other girl came to help me out instead. She was a lot nicer, so she's holding up their fort of stars lol
So, I ended up getting the blood orange donut after all. At first, I wasn't feeling it, but I kept eating it, and it was actually pretty freaking delicious. Great acidity with the glaze and boy, is that donut DENSE. I can very much appreciate that though bc I feel like I'm getting more bang for my buck. The candied orange slice on top was pretty tasty as well!
I didn't actually get to try the drink I wanted bc they ran out, but I do want to make a comment on the prices. Some of the drinks are quite expensive (iced mocha in particular), and they have very irregular prices. It's not the normal $3.50, but perhaps a $3.44. Interesting. If you're not paying with card, be prepared to need or get random change back lol
Overall, I do see myself coming back. I'm pretty determined to snag one of those hibiscus donuts O.o
My first time at a really good doughnut place in NYC and it went great! I was walking to dinner and passed City Kitchen which I remember (from Instagram) has a Dough in it, and surprisingly at 5pm had nearly every single flavor available! had the Cafe au lait, dulce de leche, salted chocolate caramel, and of course a traditional glazed and the popular hibiscus! All of them were phenomenal! these doughnuts are big too, like really big! Also had a cortado coffee too which was perfect! will def be back after I try other places like the doughnut plant, the doughnut project, and dominique ansel. (for da cronut)
Dough is one of the eateries inside City Kitchen, and is my number 2 doughnut after Doughnut Plant.
When I want a rich tasting or unusual and different flavored doughnut and Doughnut Plant is not in the cards I may opt for a Dough doughnut. And then other times since I maybe picking up Lobster Rolls from Luke's Lobster at City Kitchen or something from one of the other vendors, and Dough's is there with their colorful doughnuts, I just can't pass them up, ending with buying one or more.
Dough boasts numerous doughnuts like Cinnamon Sugar, Dulce De Leche, Mocha Almond Crunch, Hibiscus, and the Passion Fruit with what Dough calls with cocoa nibs on top, which are tiny bits of cocoa. Dough doughnuts are big and dense and should fill you up in the morning with your coffee, or tea. You need to be careful with the doughnut icing like the Hibiscus which faked off and stained my shirt when I tried to brush it off.
Now Dough at the City Kitchen is just an outlet, the doughnuts are not made there but carted in so you don't get the bakery dough aroma here and I can't tell if that 7:00 PM doughnut is a new batch when compared to the 7:00 AM one so I only go for the ones that are in groups and leave the one-z and two-z alone.
I have had dough twice since I have been in NYC. The hibiscus donut is my favorite. It has good flavor(not too sweet) and is very chewy. If I am having a donut craving, this is my go to place.
Had a donut on national donut day. The donut didn't taste that fresh, they don't make the donuts on premise. I guess the time between donut made time and delivery time does make a huge difference since the donuts need to transported via the crazy traffic in the city, not even the Transporter can get there fast enough, need a drone. And what the heck is up with "closed due to shift change" took at least half hour, making people wait… I did discover some interesting things that happened during that process along with losing my patience.
I would stick to the made on premise joint.
