  1. The name of this joint is full of misnomers. It's not located in Downtown (but in Alphabet City), or is it a Bakery (it serves mostly Mexican food). I have personally never eaten here, but my boyfriend often gets the chicken burrito with liquid-y guacamole, sour cream, and mole sauce on top. Over the years, Downtown Bakery has raised its prices, so the price of a burrito is equivalent to that of Chipotle's. I guess its a matter of your preference/support for local establishment, but I think I'd personally prefer the consistency and nutrition (if you get a salad/bowl, that is..) of Chipotle's food.

  2. The burritos are smothered with sauce, so don't expect to eat with your hands. I ordered the chorizo burrito, and it was totally worth getting messy for. I was concerned the chorizo burrito would be too breakfast-y for dinner, but it was more sausage than egg! The sausage is sliced into thick pieces, almost steak-like. The egg balances the saltiness of the meat. Rolled up with rice, beans, and a fiery green guajillo sauce, your mouth will do a happy dance and your stomach will be full of satisfaction.

  3. I'll take every tamale that's ever existed from here, please.

  4. My family and I ate here the day I moved onto the block after what felt like a dozen trips up and down to my apartment.  It was quick, casual, and tasty – so fit the bill perfectly!  My brother really liked his Enchiladas and my chicken burrito was A-OK.  Not fancy by any means, but if you're in the neighborhood and have a hankering for mexican, head over to Downtown Bakery!

  5. Foodwise this place is pretty great, and inexpensive. I need to come back for more to giv eyou a better review but seemed as legit as it gets, being in NY (similar to say Sunset Park in BK). BTW, I grew up in Mexico until after college and I tend to be pretty harsh with Mexican style food.

So I would give them 4 stars except the place could be a bit cleaner and better organized. They are very nice but the service is not that fast. Seems like a local, family biz though, which is a good reason to support them — but I'm not sure about that.

Not large so groups not recommended. Cash only.

  6. More like 3.5 stars

Decor is nothing special, you go up to a counter and order and they bring you food, which makes the place feel very casual, but at least you don't need to pay tip then!  The guys are also nice so you feel pretty welcome here.  Prices are in the $7-$10 range depending on what you get; I got a chicken burrito for $8.00 if I remember correctly.  Tax is included.  Food itself was a lot of food for the price, and they don't skimp out on the meat which is nice.  However the meat was about average and if anything perhaps under seasoned.  It's a fine place to grab a meal in a hurry or to just eat because debating about where to eat in nyc is somehow incredibly difficult.  Probably wouldn't come here for anything serious though, not because of the decor and vibe, but because the food hits about average for me.

  7. I got their bean and cheese tacos and loved it. Very tiny place but food is so fresh and delicious. The boyf absolutely loves their breakfast burritos. Over all the have lots of vegetarian options and the food is so yummy for a reasonable price. Their green sauce is good to make sure you get some if you're getting it to go.

  8. I've been coming here for years and it just gets better and better. Chorizo breakfast burrito or chilaquiles with eggs for breakfast and steak burrito with green sauce for dinner…well, any of their burritos really. Always super friendly service too!
