Dun-Well, here doughnuts are… Done well? That doesn't quite do it justice, doughnuts done exceptionally well is more appropriate.
Dun-Well Doughnuts known far and across the boroughs as the epitome of vegan doughnuts, or just as excellent doughnuts in general as they don't hype up the vegan image much which keeps the omni's coming back time and time again many of which not even realizing there's no animal products within these tasty, fluffy round discus of heaven. I'm pretty sure deities have had less suitable halo's encircling their holinesses.
With daily rotating deluxe flavors such as maple "bacon", pomegranate, peanut butter and jelly and many more there's something for everyone. In fact, there's several that appeal to everyone. Even their plain Jane glazed, maple, cinnamon sugar doughnuts and the like.
Oh and let's not forget about the VEGAN DOUGHNUT SUNDAES!
With so many cruelty free options in NYC there's no reason to not give it a shot!
Some of the best doughnuts in NYC are vegan and are thankfully now available in Manhattan.
The new location of the great shop is much more accessible, though it is a tiny hole in the wall compared to the nice, bright larger original location in Brooklyn.
All that matters though is that the doughnuts are still incredible. Get the Chocolate Peanut Butter Pretzel for $2.50, and you won't even notice you're eating something branded as "vegan", because it's as good as any of the fully animal product doughnuts around town.
Today Dun-Well is in soft-open mode; they have an array of their vegan donuts–trucked in from their main store in Bushwick–and also a freezer with some flavors of Three Little Birds vegan ice cream.
I expect that this store will do extremely well, what with Dun-Well's following, and being that in New York, everything is location, location, location. It's a tiny store; I believe it was home most recently to the New York Macaroni Company, who lasted over a year, but ultimately couldn't hack it. Before that, I think Jane's Sweet Buns was the tenant, and she couldn't make it even with a liquor license.
I for one will always get my orders to go; Dun-Well's Bushwick location is much larger, with tables, but here we have Tompkins Square Park and environs to chill out with a donut and latte. (As far as I know, they're interviewing baristas as of this writing.)
Full disclosure: I live disturbingly close to this store, and will have to exercise extreme control, or my Fat Clothes will be coming out of the closet.
Yummy~ and chewy!! They also sell 3kind of vegan Ice cream. Friendly atmosphere and kind staff~ delicious but we don't hate anythings, because it's vegan yeah
Apparently it takes a really long time to pack six donuts in a box and transport them 0.7 mi*, and have the frosted ones un-smeared upon arrival…and I'll try to forget that for the rest of this. These are honestly hard to distinguish from other non-vegan donuts in a blind taste test, especially with the pink glazed so cloying and clearing aiming for Dunkin Donuts-ness.
They also carry (though it's been unavailable via Uber eats for days) ice cream quote unquote too from 3 Little Birds, and *were initially closed for a couple days because they couldn't handle demand. They're also completely unresponsive on social media. But at least something half-decent replaced the also-OK Puddin'.
Update: bumped up from 4 to 5 stars
After enjoying it numerous times (at both locations), I've established that the PB&J is probably the best PB&J doughnut implementation I've ever tried. Recently put it in a doughnut sundae with PB ice cream… Wow. The doughnut sundae alone is an adequate reason to come here and worth the price ($9). Also the team at Dun-Well is super friendly and fun to chat with!
ITS OVER. ITS A FUCKING GO. Sorry Doughnut Plant and Peter Pan Donuts but you two got some competition happening right now. This is neck-and-neck with Doughnut Plant and Peter Pan Donuts and it's probably going to be a big tie for eternity. I love all 3 for different reasons but for the same reason in that do make sure that ITS OVA when you have fucking donuts. None of that wacky processed shit, none of that nasty weird nasty frankensugar bullshit, just straight up real deal fucking donuts that will make your balls explode or your pussy throb uncontrollably.
First and foremost I want to say that Dun-Well is not Dun-Well but fucking DUN-RIGHT. DUN-PERFECTLY, DUN-FUCK the donut game on its face and drill it doggy style making these booty donuts joints call it master.
What separates Dun-Well from a lot of other donut places is that it's vegan. You wouldn't know that though because they are very subtle about it. I had no clue it was vegan until I saw a business card. Prior to that I was prepared to drown my sorrows in a donut world and hug the toilet preparing to have a nuclear ass attack. Thankfully these donuts are vegan and it saved my butthole. So ratings shoot way the fuck up already.
I thought I was going to regret buying these donuts and was prepared to pay almost 4 bucks a pop. NOPE. At 2.50 it was highway robbery and I brought all the flavors. GOT MAD FAT THAT NIGHT and I don't feel bad at all. BAM another reason to have a 5 star rating.
As for the taste I'm going to say it's going to cure your sweet tooth without feeling disgusting and nasty afterwards. Instead it feels JUST RIGHT. Listen I'm not no fucking food critic and can't get into fancy detail about taste but I tasted ALL THE flavors and I'm going to tell you it's off the fucking chain. That's all I know and that's ALL you're going to know.
PB and J variety: OFF THE CHAIN
Pistachio: OFF THE CHAIN
Maple: OFF THE CHAIN
Cinnamon: OFF THE CHAIN
Sugar: OFF THE CHAIN
Blueberry: OFF THE CHAIN
Glazed: OFF THE CHAIN
ITS ALL FUCKING GO.
WOOP WOOP.
Alright, so listen up: If you love donuts don't play yourself ya heard? If you eat shitty mass produced donuts then you're fucking yourself over and doing yourself an injustice to the donut world.
ITS A DUN-DEAL. This place is legit.
This was my first time and it was delicious! I ordered the Cinnamon-Sugar, Glazed, and Blueberry Glazed. All three were fantastic! Also ordered a vanilla iced latte that was perfect for a hot Saturday morning. The music in the place was nice, the staff was super cool and friendly. I'll definitely be back and bring friends!
