Earth’s Basket

“And my fellow yelpers, if you've read my reviews you know I'm a vegetarian and these guys got it all; wide selection of Indian, Amy's, MorningStar, Garden-burger and thats just the cream of the crop!”

“But not Earth's Basket–it is a solid, reliable place to get fresh organic greens and fruits.”

“I'll keep coming back- they're super conveniently located near the subway, and although Eagle will probably always have the best beer selection around, EB is open until midnight!”

  1. This place is my go to when I need something in a hurry.  Like other said, it's basically a glorified bodega, which is nice because it seems like the quality and selection is better.

I will definitely be coming here on the regular.

  2. When coming off the train I will often run in an pick-up a few things from here.  They make good sandwiches too.  They always get my order right, and I appreciate that.  For a store that isn't all that big, I can always find what I'm looking for whenever I go in.

  3. YAAAAS this place is ma JAM (also they carry a lot of jam, for realsies).
I recently moved into the area and was a little crestfallen about leaving my local bodega up on 7th Av, but Earth's Basket preeettty much blows that joint out of the water. It's not quite as frilly as say, Union Market, but it's a hell of a lot more chill and full of way less strollers and moms in yoga pants, yaddaimean?

I love that the owner (Sam?) welcomed me to the 'hood when I told him I was a newbie and seemed to genuinely want to know if there were any regular products I get that he didn't stock. Truthfully there's probably a handful of things I can't find here, but for everything else it's pretty solid, Prices aren't exorbitant either which is refreshing to see from a smaller market. I like ordering bread rolls and single servings of smoked salmon when I just want a quick snack, or grabbing a super affordable (and tasty) iced coffee in the afternoon after my long runs.

Super thankful to have them in the area right off the train stop!

  4. One of the really important things I always account for when reviewing a business is where it's located. Is a Buffalo Wild Wings generally a four-star place? Not usually, but if it's the only sports bar within a 30-mile radius, then perhaps it's a more valuable establishment than it would be with sports bars on either side.

Similar to that situation is the effect Earth's Basket receives, now that it's open, as the only reliable place to buy fresh groceries in this woefully underserved portion of Brooklyn between the twin C-Towns of 9th Street and 25th Street. With a ton of new housing opening up (massive high-rises on 13th and 16th Streets and smaller condos anywhere they can find room for them), a place like this gets the extra benefits of fitting in where it's most needed.

And needed it is. How can I tell? For the past week every time I've been exiting the R at Prospect Avenue, there's been a steady stream of people from said train headed into Earth's Basket. And why not? There are fresh vegetables (unlike Tofu Food), a pretty decent selection of canned and boxed goods, a fresh salad stand (where they make it for you — though it's pretty meager), ready-to-eat meals and a sushi stand. Yep, a pick-up-and-eat sushi stand! It's no Nobu or anything, but it's a lot cheaper than most Manhattan-based pick-up-and-eat sushi places and I haven't gotten sick yet, so I'm going with the idea that it's safe, too.

The other thing it has going for it, especially with the gentrifying population changes happening in this area of town, is that it's super clean, super well-lit and incredibly inviting. Compared to a bunch of the other run-down bodegas in this area, they have a real leg up on their competition based on location (right off the subway and on the bottom floor of a new condo building) and just that it looks so much better than pretty much everything else there.

You won't find everything here that you'd find at the 9th St. C-Town (that one still takes the cake as the best grocery store in the area) but considering it's open 'til midnight most nights (if not all nights, I'm not sure), has pretty much everything I need in a "oh I forgot to get this for dinner" kind of way and helpful employees, Earth's Basket is a sorely needed and much appreciated addition to this area of South Slope.

  5. Great staff. Fresh products. I love to come here for my iced coffee and lunch.

Their Oregon Tuna Melt is amazing!
The sandwiches are big and i love that i can order my salads through the staff or just get an already made salad from the fridge, which they make in the morning.

They also sell a lot of healthy, organic, gluten-free products.

  6. What can I say the "Beer is Here" sign on the window got my attention, not that am an alcoholic or anything, lol. But it surely caught my eye since is posted throughout the building. Anyway, Earth's basket is the latest bougie spot in the neighborhood. Sure the beer selection is nice but it's not as extensive as Eagle's on Fifth avenue. They have a deli, a whole bunch of organic and health food. The place is well lit,the employees are real nice, down to earth, no hints of sarcasm like in Trader Joes. My only complaint is the prices are extravagant and this obviously represents the "new" kids on the block, the yuppies. Yes, there's a lot of high rises popping up here and there in the area, and the working poor (like myself) are forced to leave, and move deeper and deeper into the inner city. But like the saying goes, money talks, bullsh*t walks. Therefore Earth Basket will stay put since it's catering to a specific audience. It's a 3 star for me.

  7. A solid little grocery.  I live just down the street for this place so it has become my sort of go to place for missing little things (It's definitely better than the ever name changing Tofu Corp/Grade Fair/whateverthenameisthisweek place.

  8. Fresh fruit – check
Clean as a whistle – check
    Friendly staff – check
Pretty good deli sandwiches – check and check

This is a nice though slightly pricier alternative to the little humdrum neighborhood bodegas selling the usual chips and soda cigarettes. Lots of organic stuff (Amy's soups for instance), fruits and veg are always in good condition, impressive beer selection, lots of teas and a tidy deli counter with a great salads and other reheat-able foods.
