Have to update this review to four stars. Eileen's has been consistent and solid the last few times I have come. It's such a cliche, but they've got the homemade comfort food thing figured out.
Service remains somewhat inconsistent. I've had great service and pretty bad service. In part I think that depends on how busy it is.
Anyway, thanks, Eileen's!
Good food. Great vibe. A comfortable spot that allowed me to have breakfast while doing work for about 3 hours. Appreciate your generosity of spirit.
I'd love to go back here. It's kind of off the beaten path for me. But their black bread, w/ coffee, and Irish sausage is the bomb diggity bomb. Diner type place, w/ authentic Irish folks working there. A bit of a hike off the 2 train, but well worth the trip if you're in the area.
Lovely, homey place I'd happily visit again for mash potatoes, beans and deep fried Irish breakfast sausage. And I am in luck since it's not far from me. I like the variety and quaintness for the place. And then when you don't have enough of the sausages you can go across the street and buy some more at the butcher. Win Win.
I have only had the two breakfasts they are famous for, the Ulster and Irish, and they are reason enough to make a trip. The prices are good as is the service and the soda bread is fantastic.
McClean Avenue in Yonkers and the Bronx was one of the last places that the Irish kept moving to up until the late 90's when their economy started flying high (though since Ireland is not doing so well now, I wonder if they are coming back here again).
A couple of nearby bakeries and butchers make this a nice place to visit on Saturday mornings. Plus the Bronx Zoo is not all that far away.
McClean Ave is also home to real Irish bars, as in filled with fairly recent Irish immigrants instead of loud mouthed frat boys (though they make appearances, they are everywhere).
