Update they no longer make oxtail stew anymore… so this place is just 1 star
En Espanol….this place is Asi Asi. lol
We couldnt wait an hour for the delivery just up the block so I went in and did take out.
It looked Gross and was empty on a Friday night.
The food was just ok….not terrible but nothing good at all. And usually at Spanish spots like this its always too much food that you get. We spent 10 bucks each and there wasnt enough food in the end.
I wouldnt go back and actually yelled at my friend that he needs to step it up where he eats.
We pass by this place all the time and it always looks full at dinnertime on weekdays, so tonight we finally got around to trying it. We ordered four dishes for takeout (when I went to pick them up, only one table was occupied – although it was a Sunday evening. The interior is rather spartan, so it's all about the food). The person who took my order was pleasant enough, both on the phone and in person. Also, they have an "A" rating from the Health Department.
The food was very tasty and we had enough left over for another meal (that was our intention, after having read several comments concerning portion size). We ordered four seafood dishes: Don Miguel, Camarones Empanizados, Salmon A La Parrilla and Filete De Pescado Relleno De Camarones. The last two came with vegetables which were very fresh-tasting. Also; each dish came with a very generous portion of rice (we chose the yellow, but other options are white or white & peas) and beans in a sauce. I don't like spicy food, so I was glad the food wasn't spicy (spicy dishes are indicated as such).
The total cost was $58 (for what amounts to two meals for two people) and there will even be extra rice & beans left over for a lunch.
Note: Cash only.
I'm sad that this place was closed by the Health Department. Their Mofongo was delicious.
I'm not sure how authentic the food is, but I had a good experience at this casual diner in the middle of nowhere.
Ahh, I forgot that this location was once shut down by the Health Dept… Yikes! BUT, I can attest that my belly survived my recent trip there just fine. I needed a quick affordable lunch that wasn't a pizza slice. Came in and of course was tempted by the mangú breakfast cause I haven't had it in SO so long. My mangú breakfast with a fried egg and the onions was FANtastic, much of it because of all the DR memories it brought back. I greedily bought sancocho too, but was too full from the mangú. Saved it in my fridge and ate it a day or two later. Still tasted yummy and was filling. Service was not overly accommodating when I went in at 11 something on a Tuesday, but hey, it's a diner. I'd rate this 5 stars except the other location is closer to my house, and is the classic, original one (at least in my mind). If you've never had Dominican food before, the El Castillos are the place to go to give your taste buds the Caribbean adventure they deserve! 😉
I absolutely love coming here when I crave Spanish food. This may be the most authentic Spanish food you will eat on the lower east side. Everything is made in the restaurant and tastes as though your abuelita has been cooking on a hot stove all day.
My favorite thing to order is their steak sandwich with lettuce onions and mayonnaise. But their pernil with rice and beans is also great.
If you're ever on the lower east side definitely check this place out!
