El Chevere is soooo good! Every time I visit my parents, I eat El Chevere – it seriously has become my "home cooked meal" haha (my parents never cook!). I was so glad that we no longer have to travel all the way to Passaic to buy some Peruvian rotisserie chicken so when they finally opened this restaurant in North Bergen I was so happy. Everything is so good! The rotisserie chicken, french fries, salad, and the rice are delicious! We usually order beforehand and then go pick it up but they also offer delivery. I really recommend take out or even dining in, the place is a bit small but still very accommodating.
For 2.5 years now I have been looking for a Peruvian jawn in the NJ/NYC area where I could get my Lomo Saltado fix on.
It finally happened and it nearly brought me to tears on how close it reminded me of my favorite Peruvian place back home in Cali.
The Lomo Saltado was perfection. Their green sauce was on point and the super spicy yellow one had me salivating for more.
Washed it all down with an Inca Cola and you can bet your ass I'll be back.
Delicious.
I hate to be the debbie-downer at a party but I feel like the high ratings and reviews this place gets are a bit generous.
I came here for lunch solely based on the yelp ratings and reviews and had high expectations but came away a bit disappointed.
Food:
Free snack – The toasted corn bits are pretty unique and delicious. I thoroughly enjoyed them as a nice pre-meal snack.
Appetizers – I ordered the Yuca Fries w/ cheese since people raved about it but I was not impressed at all. If you love Yuca, I suppose it would be decent but I the Yuca wasn't very crispy on the outside and the cheese sauce was too liquid-y and not flavorful at all. It was definitely not worth $7.
Entrees – The $7 lunch specials are good deals. They come with either soup (not bad) or salad (avoid at all costs) and a drink. The soup (don't know what kind of soup it was) was nice as it was basically a clear soup with one piece of short rib, pasta and various vegetables. It didn't have great flavor but it wasn't a cheaply made soup either. The salad was a tiny dish of shredded lettuce and one tomato slice slathered in ranch dressing; pretty much as cheap as you can get. I got the 1/4 rotisserie chicken w/ fried rice while my brother got the sliced beef (sirloin) w/ onions and tomatoes. Considering their specialty is the rotisserie chicken, I was extremely disappointed to find the chicken to be extremely dry. Their 1/4 piece was a generous size but I barely finished half. The fried rice on the other hand was pretty delicious. My brother's dish was ok. He complained that there was no flavor but the portion was generous. Their green sauce was sub-par which was really unfortunate because a good green sauce would have elevated all their dishes a lot.
Service: Service was really not on point. We were the only patrons in the restaurant yet we had to constantly flag down the waiter whenever we needed anything. I also hate the fact that they don't offer tap water and force you to order bottled water. It could be they do offer tap water but they try to force the bottled water on you.
Overall, the $7 lunch specials are a fair price and if the quality of the food was better, it would be a money place to go to but I looked at their dinner prices and they were pretty pricey and I couldn't justify ever going there for dinner.
If you want the best rotisserie chicken with fried rice, check out Peking BBQ in Woodside, Queens. You won't regret it.
